To think teachers shouldn't be drinking on trips?

Dc just back from trip overseas. Apparently as soon as they were in their rooms the teachers went to the hotel bar. (The kids snuck down to check on them so they could all go into each other's rooms). Were also drinking wine and cocktails at dinner (before walking kids around an overseas city for an hour to their hotel at 11pm)

Is this normal? In charge of 13yr olds?

When I was a teacher on residential, there’d always be one member of staff who didn’t drink each night so that there was someone able to drive/act in an emergency. That was secondary.

Dermymc · 15/03/2019 20:48

And YY to staff drinking with dc who were old enough.

Don't tell OP, she'll loose her mind.

sailorsdelight · 15/03/2019 20:49

Lighten up! It’s normal... leave them alone...

BunsOfAnarchy · 15/03/2019 20:49

Wow.
This is a joke right? I guess they should not sleep either just in case a child needs something at 3am...

A few glasses of wine is not the end of the world. They won't be expected to perform surgery on anyone, as long as they are capable to phone taxi/parents/emergency services its fine!

Alsohuman · 15/03/2019 20:51

Nobody ever drinks when their children are around do they? Grow up, OP.

TheZeppo · 15/03/2019 20:51

Were you there? How on earth do you know that they were all drinking? And most adults can handle a single drink without being hugely altered.

Sexnotgender · 15/03/2019 20:52

In future probably best not to send your DC on school trips.

FiveGoMadInDorset · 15/03/2019 20:54

What is this dangerous city you are talking about?

Scotinoz · 15/03/2019 20:54

Normal I think. Teachers certainly drank on my school trips in later years. And let us drink at 15+. "One drink children...one drink with dinner..." then made us walk 3 miles around cities

Boom45 · 15/03/2019 20:55

My husband is in the pub and I've just poured myself a glass of wine. My 4 and 6 year olds are upstairs in bed. I'm not gonna get shitfaced (although DH might be - its a birthday or a leaving do or a friday or something) but I'm gonna enjoy my wine, why shouldn't some poor teachers who've been working all day with a bunch of excited teenagers on a trip do the same?

Newyeardontcare · 15/03/2019 20:56

Because, they aren't in charge of their own kids!

OP posts:
Boom45 · 15/03/2019 20:56

And also, just because they were in the bar it doesn't mean they were all drinking. There's no where else to sit together in a hotel.

PurpleDragons · 15/03/2019 20:57

I think it’s fine, but considering our head of year was drinking vodka shots with some of the other pupils on our overseas trip in year 9 I think that I may have low expectations Grin

TheFairyCaravan · 15/03/2019 20:57

When we went to France with the school in the 80s, aged 13/14, we stayed with families who gave us wine with dinner. We thought it was great. 😂

I couldn't get worked up about teachers having a drink when the kids should be in bed.

YourEggnogIsBetterThanMine · 15/03/2019 20:57

who knows what their tolerance levels are?

they will know!! A grown adult will know how much they can handle. A fully-grown, adult, sensible human can make that call without your input.

Boom45 · 15/03/2019 20:58

No, they're not in charge of their own kids. They're giving up time with their own families ( for no extra salary) to take other people's kids on a educational experience.

Stormy76 · 15/03/2019 20:58

It’s normal, they are looking after teens on a trip not taking care of newborn babies.

LJdorothy · 15/03/2019 20:58

You have no idea that the teachers were drinking alcohol and neither does your child. They could just as easily have been having mocktails. You don't know and are getting riled up on the basis of no evidence whatsoever. I hope you thanked the staff for taking your child on a trip abroad, but I have a feeling you have taken their hard work completely for granted.

Chlo1674 · 15/03/2019 20:58

Nothing wrong with a drink or two after the kids have gone to bed. I wouldn’t have a problem with that (they probably need it after looking after all those kids during the day) But getting shitfaced when you are in charge of 30+ kids is totally irresponsible.

YetAnotherBloodyNameChanger · 15/03/2019 20:58

A dangerous city!? Surely you wouldn’t let your DC go to a dangerous city. Confused

Nala8 · 15/03/2019 20:59

I wouldn't blame them having a drink looking after a bunch of kids 24/7 on a trip!

SileneOliveira · 15/03/2019 21:00

Fucks sake, OP. Unclench and thank the lovely teachers who gave up their FREE TIME to take your precious pickle away on a trip. A couple of glasses of wine is not an issue.

Who'd be a teacher?

Noonooyou · 15/03/2019 21:00

This is totally normal. And I can guarantee that there'll have been at least 1 teacher not having a drink. You really need to chill out. It'll have all been risk assessed. It's not as if they left them unattended to go to a night club!
Most people (and I imagine responsible teachers) know their own limits.

I remember going on a school trip when I was in 6th form as helpers for the year 7s. Us sixth formers who were already 18 were allowed a drink.

Livpool · 15/03/2019 21:00

YABU - they are allowed downtime

OwlBeThere · 15/03/2019 21:01

I remember going on a school overseas trip and one of my teachers being hammered drunk on the way back from s bowling evening. As long as it’s not that then I can’t say I’d care if they had the odd beer.
