To think teachers shouldn't be drinking on trips?

Dc just back from trip overseas. Apparently as soon as they were in their rooms the teachers went to the hotel bar. (The kids snuck down to check on them so they could all go into each other's rooms). Were also drinking wine and cocktails at dinner (before walking kids around an overseas city for an hour to their hotel at 11pm)

Is this normal? In charge of 13yr olds?

Friedspamfritters so teachers would be lying if they could identify any positives about their job? I hope thats not true as I'd like to think my DC's teacher doesn't hate it from start to finish.

Beniejaney · 15/03/2019 23:49

ilovesooty ok well I'm sure you've got a big pile of books to mark and a glass of wine to drink so I'll leave it there.

ilovesooty · 15/03/2019 23:51

The passive aggressive crossing out makes no difference.
I don't teach any more. If you'd been capable of following the thread you'd have remembered that.
No wine either. Grin

LJdorothy · 15/03/2019 23:53

You might like to think your DC's teacher doesn't hate her job but sadly thousands of teachers are hating their jobs so much that they are leaving the profession. There are lots of reasons, but perhaps attitudes like some of those displayed on this thread play a part.

HardofCleaning · 15/03/2019 23:57

Bloody hell and people wonder why teachers feel unappreciated. AT the moment we have threads moaning that a teacher sent a lovely hand written thank you card and also that after giving up time away from their families and their own lives probably for a week or so the teachers dared to have a glass of wine in the evening. I can guarantee none of the parents moaning would ever volunteer to take their kids and all their friends on a trip abroad.

The tittle tattle child takes after his mother......

Have you asked your little angel why he was out of his room when he wasn't supposed to be?

Glig · 16/03/2019 00:11

Yes. One of mine was awake because of teachers partying.

AlexaAmbidextra · 16/03/2019 00:34

A nurse

Beniejaney. Well as a former nurse I think your ignorant, nasty attitude brings shame on both you and the nursing profession.

brizzlemint · 16/03/2019 00:37

I'm also here to find out which dangerous city they're taking kids to these days..

Just about any city unfortunately :(

Taking children on residential trips is one of the most stressful things you can do, I think. I used to take classes away for a week (seven days and six nights; 100+ unpaid hours over the course of the week) and still be expected to turn up for work the Monday morning after our return on a Sunday afternoon, ready to go for another week in school. When on trips, especially with younger children (mine were Year 6) you really are on call the whole time: plenty of instructions from parents to wake their child at midnight to go to the toilet to avoid wetting, administration of medication or supervision of medical procedures, changing wet bedding, comforting homesick pupils etc. Now I have children of my own, I don't offer to take classes on trips anymore as my kids see precious little of me in term time anyway, but I am virtually prostrate with gratitude for my DC's teachers who take them on residential trips and definitely do not begrudge them a drink. I also always send chocolates for the teachers to enjoy while away, because I know what a thankless task it can be, however rewarding.

BBCK · 16/03/2019 00:58

When I worked as a language “assistante” in France the teachers’ dining room was provided with an unlimited supply of wine and cider to accompany our lunch every day at SCHOOL 😂. I no longer volunteer for school trips due to the ridiculous holier-than-thou attitude of some parents. Every kid I know who’s been on a school trip remembers it as one of the highlights of their young life but any teacher who gives up their time with their family UNPAID to provide this experience is putting themselves at risk of all sorts of trouble nowadays. Take your own bloody kids, it’s their loss, certainly not mine!

Mrskeats · 16/03/2019 00:59

And yet on another thread it was being argued that kids should not have been brought home from a trip where pupils has been doing drugs. The hypocrisy of this site is astounding at times. Not to mention all the weed apologists who smoke with their kids in the house.
All teachers should stop doing trips. Why should we give up our free time?

safariboot · 16/03/2019 01:09

Damnit, OP's been chased away now so we'll never know the city! I'm guessing Detroit.

Pieceofpurplesky · 16/03/2019 01:12

I can almost guarantee that there would have been a rota and several teachers would not have been drinking in order to be on duty. 20 years teaching and lots of trips and I have never seen any different.

Your dc will be well looked after.

Ginseng1 · 16/03/2019 01:12

No I don't expect teachers to be teetotal for up to a week of their own hols just the same as i have few drinks when I am away or not with my kids. I could accompany my kids through a major city safely after having few beverages so why wouldn't the teachers? I'd say the teachers who do this sort of thing do it cos they like their job like kids (to a degree! ) n like the travel & explore aspect & are not looking to get shit faced every night! I know people come up with mad scenarios 'my friends nephew had to carry his teacher home etc' but for the most part they just relaxing in the evening like anyone would. I do wonder why teachers go on these trips during their hols though is there pressure from the head for teachers to do it,?

Sickofthemoaning · 16/03/2019 04:51

@Newyeardontcare if your kids are anything like you know wonder they were having a drink!!!

Jocasta2018 · 16/03/2019 06:04

Has anyone seen the Graham Norton show when Greg Davies talks about a school trip he went on as a teacher? It's absolutely hilarious! I think the OP would have a shitfit. I've been on school trips when all the teachers had a glass of wine with dinner then had a designated sober teacher every evening.

Ouchmytoe · 16/03/2019 06:12

Hahaha. If they were slamming tequilas or playing beer pong I'd be concerned. A glass of wine or cocktail at dinner is well deserved! As is a couple of drinks in the hotel bar before bed! I assume they're not binge drinking before heading out clubbing - that would be a problem but not this!

Qwertylass · 16/03/2019 06:28

Year 5 teacher here. When we went on a trip in June I had 2 glasses of red so shoot me. 24/7 care is impossible.

youknowmedontyou · 16/03/2019 06:30

The 13 year olds sneaked down to see the teachers and saw everyone of them drinking, but wasn't spotted themselves.

Utter bollocks OP and teach your child to do as he is instructed in a dangerous city and stay in his room?

Aveeno2017 · 16/03/2019 06:35

Newyeardontcare did it occur to you that your child might of exaggerated a little bit?

Qwertylass · 16/03/2019 06:36

Exactly I would be more annoyed if my child had disobeyed the teacher.

Feb2018mumma · 16/03/2019 06:46

The teachers were having a drink with dinner and your son only knew becuase he snuck out to spy on them so he could disobey them and you are angry at the teachers? YABU

Pegase · 16/03/2019 06:59

BiscuitBiscuitBiscuit and you could probably do with some Winetoo

Bluntness100 · 16/03/2019 07:06

Isn't this part of the snowflake generation, the over protective my kid can do no wrong bullshit some parents are afflicted with.

Kids are told to stay in their rooms. Not to go in each other's. They are old enough to comprehend this. They sneak out to check the teachers are busy so they can roam the corridors and go to different rooms.

They spot the teachers at dinner, some have drinks with their meal.

Responsible parent attitude:

Why were you out of bed and breaking the rules, do you understand why for your own safety it was important you stayed where you were supposed to be. If you can't act responsibly you can't go on these trips. The teachers are adults and responsible ones at that, they were simply having a drink with their evening meal and they are not the ones who have done something wrong. You are.

Snow flake parent attitude :

Were they drinking with their meal, that's shocking, let me complain to the school, you were in such a dangerous city, they were in charge of you. They must have been getting wankered, I'm furious, let me complain.

It's really quite disturbing.
