Transvaginal ultrasound AIBU to be close to tears?

I have an infection in my vagina, a stinging in there, and when I sit down, I feel like a painful football is bouncing around my insides - not my vagina, my uterus area, inside my tummy.
I also have an issue internally (bleeding and pelvic pain) which is why I'm being referred for US.
AIBU to be doing the female equivalent of my balls shrinking into my scrotum at the thoughts of anything going up my vagina?
Is there any way I can make a probe up my vagina tomorrow possible? I want to find out what's going on clearly, but the thoughts of the pain is upsetting me. Plus I'm not sure whether they'll manage to get anything up there.
Any advice?

AnyWalls exactly. As horrible as it is you just want them to hurry up and do it rather than have to go back again and go through the same. I don't know why I keep getting these problems down there and it worries me especially as I haven't had my smear but I'm so raw and sore and fed up of it all I can't put myself through that. It was bad enough yesterday her prodding me with a long cotton bud as I'm so red and sore. She suggested I use the Canesten cream with the steroid in it as well for how red I was down there. It sucks to be a woman doesn't it 👎😢. 🤞fingers crossed for you tomorrow xx

I hate the full bladder to start with. Pressing down on a full bladder is quite sore!

I know thrush. It is not thrush.

Oh god the full bladder thing. I got told off for my bladder being too full Hmm

Then told to go and pee for 10 seconds. Cos it's just that easy at 30 wks pregnant. can't even do that when I'm not pregnant

DearTeddyRobinson · 14/03/2019 21:18

Jesus OP that sounds horrendous. Has the GP done any swabs? Maybe the sonographer will have some ideas on what's causing it, I'm sure they've seen a few iffy undercarriages in their time!
Hope you get to the bottom of it (no pun intended) - sore bits are utterly miserable. Hang in there

TwistinMyMelon · 14/03/2019 21:19

The probe is not much thicker than a tampon, I had one during a ruptured ectopic, lying flat was more painful than the probe itself. They are doing it for a good reason.

AnyWalls · 14/03/2019 21:19

@WeeDangerousSpike
Thank you for your lovely post. It seemed with the speculum I was totally fine until it went right up inside, so I'm hoping maybe they can manage that aspect of it similarly.

I just want it over and done with. I'll take the pain. Doesn't mean I'm looking forward to it, but I suppose now that I'm prepared for a bit of pain I'll be fine.

I took my wife in with me for emotional support. The nurse originally said they don't allow people in but when I explained that as a lesbian, I wasn't used to penetration and was very anxious, she checked with the sonographer and she allowed it. It wasn't anywhere near as bad as I expected, I did find I could feel it moving around and sort of pressing at times but it wasn't painful as such, and I found the speculum for my smears much worse.

cranstonmanor · 14/03/2019 21:20

I've had hundreds of vaginal scans which were fine. However I had one when I was severely bruised in my vagina and it wasn't fine. It was doable though, and they used extra lube but if it hurts now, then of course the site of the infection will hurt worse when they touch it. Can you take paracetamol an hour beforehand to take the edge off a little?

Jenniferb21 · 14/03/2019 21:21

I had to have 2 when I was heavily pregnant with my twins. I had pelvic pain and explained that. Hubby came with me to help me on and off the coach but they offered a healthcare assstant to help if I wanted that instead.

It’s not painful it’s nowhere near anything like a smear test. It’s like you can feel it there but it’s not even uncomfortable I would say

Remember they are very used to doing it too

Good luck xxxx

expat101 · 14/03/2019 21:22

Have you talked this through with your GP? Surely the best recommendation would for you to go into hospital and have it done under anaesthetic?

AnyWalls · 14/03/2019 21:24

The GP didn't take a swab as it was 3pm and the swabs had been sent off for the day. She said taking one would tell her nothing as by the time it got sent off, the results would mean nothing. She prescribed antibiotics which I couldn't tolerate and referred me for an urgent ultrasound for the other reason I was there i.e. constant bleeding and pelvic pain.
The reason I'm referred for the US is the bleeding and pelvic pain. The vaginal infection, to me, is an entirely separate issue (in my head anyway).

Do you know the best way to find out what is going on is the internal scan .the outside scan will only show a certain amount after drinking lots of water. The best way to show cyclists or blocked tubes or anything else is the internal scan dose not hurt at all and is very dignified . They are aware of your medical situation before they start and it is very soft .

WeeDangerousSpike · 14/03/2019 21:29

The best way to show cyclists or blocked tubes or anything else Grin

Bloody hell op, no wonder it hurts!

mummymayhem18 · 14/03/2019 21:34

Sorry I wasn't implying yours was thrush. I think there is more going on with me than just repeated thrush that doesn't want to go away since having a few course of antibiotics for a chest infection. I'm just generally really raw and sore round the vagina and lips and up higher round the urethral area. I also often feel tender like I've had a good kicking there. Xx

HermioneWeasley · 14/03/2019 21:39

Valium

IndieTara · 14/03/2019 21:49

Op couldn't they try you On Different antibiotics to clear the infection before an US?

Missingstreetlife · 14/03/2019 21:54

Thrush can be quite nasty, they can give canestan as a medicine, but for some reason don't. Ask if it's severe or recurrent after antibiotics, and wash all your towels, bedding, underwear, make your partner use cream or it will just keep coming back.

JuniperGinYay · 14/03/2019 22:08

I hate to say this but the honest answer is it’s going to be unpredictable in your circumstances. Ask to go very slow or ask to try inserting yourself to manage potential pain. Explain your fears clearly.

Hopefully it will be fine, being a bit different to the speculum, but you can’t be 100% reassured.

I understand the fear, mainly just try to detract yourself and stop any internet research and try to live in the now. I was like this before an OP in any area that had caused me so much pain (I’m pleased to report it went super smoothly and better than I could imagine)

LinenLou · 14/03/2019 22:19

I work in ultrasound. TA means trans abdominal. If you think you will be in too much pain you can refuse the internal and just have the trans abdominal scan. You may find your sonographer won't want to do the tv if you're in a lot of discomfort anyway.
They can always re book you for the internal scan for another time when your infection has cleared up or isn't so inflamed.
Make sure you go in with a very full bladder so they can get good top views of your uterus and ovaries, as a full bladder has a kind of magnifying glass effect. Good luck!

AnyWalls · 14/03/2019 22:59

Thanks. I'll go in with a bladder full.

I just want to avoid them not being able to do whatever they need to do and having to go back.

OP posts:
AnyWalls · 14/03/2019 23:02

I was referred for an urgent scan. Not sure why actually.

OP posts:
AnyWalls · 14/03/2019 23:05

I didn't ask as I was between crying and feeling annoyed at my GP for hurting me (as if she did it on purpose lol), so when she said she was referring me for an urgent scan I just walked out (forgetting phone, headphones and handbag). I'm my own worst enemy sometimes.

OP posts:
AnyWalls · 14/03/2019 23:07

She didn't send me to A&E, so I'm taking that as a good sign!

OP posts:
LittlePaintBox · 14/03/2019 23:10

I have one of these coming up, a friend who's had several for fertility reasons has assured me it won't hurt but I'm going to take the suggestions on here of pain relief.

I'm not sure I can hold 2 pints of water for very long without wetting myself.
