Transvaginal ultrasound AIBU to be close to tears?

I have an infection in my vagina, a stinging in there, and when I sit down, I feel like a painful football is bouncing around my insides - not my vagina, my uterus area, inside my tummy.
I also have an issue internally (bleeding and pelvic pain) which is why I'm being referred for US.
AIBU to be doing the female equivalent of my balls shrinking into my scrotum at the thoughts of anything going up my vagina?
Is there any way I can make a probe up my vagina tomorrow possible? I want to find out what's going on clearly, but the thoughts of the pain is upsetting me. Plus I'm not sure whether they'll manage to get anything up there.
Any advice?

@AnyWalls I really sympathise with you! When I had very similar issues I had several different vaginal examinations until I was diagnosed with cervical erosion and endometriosis. The wand really was the easiest of them all!

The best advice I can give is to take a couple of paracetamol half an hour before the appointment and do your best to relax during! I know it's so difficult but if you aren't relax it will feel 10x worse. I literally count myself through the experience.. also, let the nurse/doctor know how nervous you are and hopefully they will use extra lube! Good luck to you!

I think ..i have read the full thread..I would be saying no to anything going up there ,untill the soreness of the vagina was sorted out.it sounds like 2 sperate issues...possibly I'd be getting an emergency gp appointment first and finding why the vagina was swollen and sore ,before anthing goes up looking for causes of bleeding..I hope you get sorted op tomorrow, sorry things are so bad x

Miljah · 14/03/2019 20:33

Sorry, I'm bowing out.

I can't understand whether you've had TVS before, or just a speculum.

A is generally much less potentially painful than B.

Hope you get it all sorted.

Women's problems are rarely a stroll in the park in terms of dignity..... but a TVS shouldn't hurt.

Boysey45 · 14/03/2019 20:33

You'll be alright, take some strong painkillers if you are worried like co codamol. I've had it done and it wasn't very nice from a modesty point of view but it didn't hurt, I hear that you are swollen and sore so take them and if it hurts too much then tell the person doing the scan.
Also I never knew they did a thin one for virgins!, I was never offered this option at 40!

MeadowHay · 14/03/2019 20:34

I haven't RTFT and I don't know whether your condition/symptoms would make the process painful or not (perhaps ask your healthcare providers whether they have any thoughts on this?), but I've had two - one as a gynae investigation which found a small-but-not-insignificant ovarian cyst, and the radiographer had really bad bedside manner considering I was so anxious and wouldn't let my DH come into the room with me (this was abroad! very different to here), and the other as a follow-up, here on the NHS, a male ultrasound technician did it but DH was with me as well as a female HCA as a chaperone. Neither were painful at all, perhaps slightly uncomfortable but not painful. Way less uncomfortable than VEs I had during labour, for example. Like felt hardly anything compared to the VEs.

TheFormidableMrsC · 14/03/2019 20:34

OP, I had one a couple of weeks ago because of identified awful pains near my cervix and my ovaries. Like you I'd had one before with no issues but this time I was very nervous about it hurting but it was fine. I did say that I had a lot of discomfort and I think that's what you do, tell them you are in excruciating pain. Extra lube might help a lot too. I wish you luck, I know it must be very scary but I hope the anticipation is worse than the actual event Flowers

Prequelle · 14/03/2019 20:34

They can and do hurt when women have issues going on that cause pain and inflammation of the vagina. You came in here all guns blazing and accusatory despite being quite ignorant about the topic except your own experiences. It's probably best to bow out.

AnyWalls · 14/03/2019 20:35

Ok, sorry. It's clear I haven't made myself clear. I have a vaginal infection which has swollen my vagina, makes it feel like it's on fire (not in a good way lol), and that it is red raw.
That is why I am concerned about tomorrow. I need to find out what the hell is going on with my uterus, but I'm afraid they won't be able to carry out a full exam (i.e. a transvaginal scan in addition to the pelvic scan) due to the possibility that the pain in my vagina will be too much.

*Unidentified awful pains. God I type shite sometimes Hmm

MeadowHay · 14/03/2019 20:36

Oh I've had speculums before as well for gynae investigations, twice, didn't find either of those painful at all either but both times the doctors did it all very slowly and coached my breathing through them as I was so anxious. TVS feels different to the speculums but I haven't found either painful at all.

SleepWarrior · 14/03/2019 20:37

I've had one due to pain (albeit different to yours). It hurt like heck but was bearable in the sense of not kicking anyone! I sat on my fists which did make it easier to just press my arms down and bear the pain.

Hopefully it won't be as pokey as the speculum? Can you take strong painkillers in advance?

MeadowHay · 14/03/2019 20:38

Are there any painkillers you can take before the procedure? Who referred you, can you speak to them about it and how to manage the pain? Maybe they could prescribe you something for it specially or even a sedative if that's what you wanted?

MollysLips · 14/03/2019 20:38

If you're too sore for the internal wand tomorrow, they can still scan your womb through your tummy, can't they? I think - I THINK, I'm not sure - the internal wand helps them see your ovaries... or have I totally made that up? That doesn't sound right.

Could you try a Canestan pessary tonight? They're really soothing. Or natural yogurt? Ice cream?? I don't know.

SleepWarrior · 14/03/2019 20:38

I wonder if they might have gas and air available. Could you ring up beforehand and ask?

snowdrop6 · 14/03/2019 20:38

In which case I would sort out the infection with my gp,and postpone the scan for when infection Is clear..no point making infection worse,

Scottishgirl85 · 14/03/2019 20:38

I've had countless internal scans as a result of IVF. The insertion is weird but once it's in it's honestly fine. It's not painful at any point, just a bit weird.

MollysLips · 14/03/2019 20:39

Ice pop?? 😆

Boysey45 · 14/03/2019 20:40

I'm sure they will have dealt with this before and if they cant do it then surely they could offer you stronger painkillers or give you antibiotics to get rid of the infection first? Please don't worry I'm sure it will all get sorted out.

AnyWalls · 14/03/2019 20:42

FFS, does nobody read the thread anymore?

TheFormidableMrsC · 14/03/2019 20:44

@AnyWalls I do understand your post, hence mine. I think you just have to explain..they will probably do an external ultrasound anyway (did with me, that one was first). If they can't do it on this occasion then I guess it's a case of treating the infection and then having to go back. You'll just have to play it by ear tomorrow. Good luck!

AnyWalls · 14/03/2019 20:45

It's like you mention a vagina and you have 10 people telling you all about their IVF and their smear tests without actually reading any single thing I've said!

OP posts:
AFistfulofDolores1 · 14/03/2019 20:45

@Miljah - Please read. The OP's vagina is severely inflamed and swollen. So anything going up there is going to hurt.

ChoccyBiccyTastic · 14/03/2019 20:45

Ask if you can insert the US wand yourself.

I was asked at my first if I wanted to do it. The sonographer took over once it was in. Maybe you can get the worst of it over at your own pace and feel more in control?

AnyWalls · 14/03/2019 20:46

@Mollylips that's what I feel like I need! Grin
