Transvaginal ultrasound AIBU to be close to tears?

I have an infection in my vagina, a stinging in there, and when I sit down, I feel like a painful football is bouncing around my insides - not my vagina, my uterus area, inside my tummy.
I also have an issue internally (bleeding and pelvic pain) which is why I'm being referred for US.
AIBU to be doing the female equivalent of my balls shrinking into my scrotum at the thoughts of anything going up my vagina?
Is there any way I can make a probe up my vagina tomorrow possible? I want to find out what's going on clearly, but the thoughts of the pain is upsetting me. Plus I'm not sure whether they'll manage to get anything up there.
Any advice?

Anywalls I had a nasty case of inflammation downstairs. I didn't need a scan but swabs. I hear you! The pain was indescribable. I had a diagnosis of vulval dermatitis in the end. Take some ibuprofen before going and I don't know whether its best for them to go in gingerly or get it over with. Is there a possibility of some lidocaine? That stung like hell but did bring relief. Tell them your concerns and ask them what they suggest upon insertion.

AFistfulofDolores1 · 14/03/2019 20:47

OP, I've read your posts, but not all the others. If I were you, I'd be asking for sedation and/or the kind of pain relief that will stop you from caring if they insert something into your vagina. If they won't do that, then I'd refuse until they can come up with a solution that doesn't have you howling in agony. They're supposed to be treating you; not making you feel worse.

Lifeofa · 14/03/2019 20:47

Is a scan of the pelvis done externally?

endofthelinefinally · 14/03/2019 20:50

Could you ask if they can use some local anaesthetic cream?
Maybe take an ice pack wrapped in a plastic bag and an old cloth with you and hold it against your vulva for a few minutes before they start?
Those blue gel filled ice packs stay frozen for hours.
You could use it afterwards to numb the pain a bit.
Did your GP take a swab to identify any possible infection?
I am so sorry - it sounds miserable.

ILove · 14/03/2019 20:50

Oh bless you. I ABOLUTELY understand having had a hysterectomy after so many issues.

Ok so.

TVS. A wand, condom and lube. Ask them for extra lube. You CAN ask for gas and air - I have in the past (inc on TV...) it helps. Ask as soon as you arrive, or even ring beforead as they need to get it delivered.

Breathe. Easy to say, but hard to do. Ask for a hand to hold - either your partner or a companion or a chaperone.

Breathe. I understand, honestly.

You CAN do this.

If someone is driving you there and back, have a gin beforehand. Yes, even at 9am.

HazelBite · 14/03/2019 20:51

I had one last year as I had "lumps/growths" in the vagina. Yes it was uncomfortable and painful, had I known beforehand I would have taken a painkiller.
I was sore before it happened ,and it hurt for about 10 minutes after, but it meant they could sort the problem out, which was absolutely necessary.

AnyWalls · 14/03/2019 20:51

My referral is for an US scan of the: US Pelvis TA and transvaginal

No idea what TA is.

Take two paracetamols and two Ibuprofen an hour before. They will take the edge of the pain. 💐

Trans Anal?

Orangesandlemons82 · 14/03/2019 20:54

Trans abdominal

Hazlenutpie · 14/03/2019 20:54

It’s trans abdominal.

WhyTheLongFace · 14/03/2019 20:56

Can you squeeze a load of canesten up there just before the TVS?

And ask if you can insert the probe yourself, then you can see if you can tolerate it.
And warn the scanner that if you say stop you really mean it.

AnyWalls · 14/03/2019 20:57

I'm not sure painkillers are going to help, but I'll take some before I tootle off tomorrow.
I know I need to get to the bottom of what is going on, so I need to be able to get through this, even if it feels like someone has shoved a razor blade up my punani.
I'm usually so blase about shit like this, but I do have a fear of pain I suppose.

I had loads for an infertility investigation, IVF and a twin pregnancy. IMO, they were all painless and much better than the normal ultrasound where you have to drink 2 pints of water - and then there’s a delay!

Waterfred · 14/03/2019 20:58

Phew. You don’t need bum action too.

I feel for you. One of mine had to be abandoned and they went to an abdominal one instead.

AnyWalls · 14/03/2019 20:59

The thing is, I'm very well able to say stop if I feel like it. I'm posting to get me through this anyway because I don't want the bollocks of having to go back twice!

OP posts:
Hazlenutpie · 14/03/2019 21:01

It’s completely understandable that you are frightened. The pain relief will help I promise you.

AnyWalls · 14/03/2019 21:02

PMSL Sorry, but this thread is funny. I'm having a scan of my arse now?

OP posts:
mummymayhem18 · 14/03/2019 21:02

Good luck tomorrow OP. I can really sympathise . I'm currently in a lot of pain down below at the moment like you feel a real sore burning rawness up inside. Urethral area also sore. I suffer with thrush a lot but went to the doctors yesterday as I thought it might be urethritis this time around. She examined me and took swabs. Pulled my vagina apart to look and feels like she's torn me so I'm in more pain now than I was before I went in 😢. I have been having ongoing pains down there and also have painful bladder syndrome which can make your vagina and urethra hurt as well as the inflamed bladder. I was due my smear test last October but because I've been so sore like you I don't want or think I could stand anything going up there. I find smears really painful anyway since I had my daughter but now I have this soreness as well there's no way I could do it. And yes I know how important they are but I just can't. I really hope you manage to get it done tomorrow so at least you can get some answers. Good luck, I will be thinking of you ❤️

AnyWalls · 14/03/2019 21:03

And it is the one where I have to drink 2 pints of water.

OP posts:
Missingstreetlife · 14/03/2019 21:03

A speculum or smear hurts because it's metal and rigid and they expand it to open the vagina and see the cervix and scrape at the top, and sometimes gp or nurse not v skilled
Your scan will be by a skilled practicioner, I had one last week, am old and got vaginal atrophy, smear is horrible. They were kindness itself, the probe is v thin/narrow and has a camera at the end so no stretching or scraping. Slight pressure when looking at ovaries but honestly not painful and v discreet. Good luck sure you will survive and hope you find out what is wrong and get it fixed

TheFormidableMrsC · 14/03/2019 21:06

Everybody's been really nice and supportive, despite not all realising that you are already familiar with this procedure. What do you want everybody to say? If you can't stand it, tell them to stop, then you'll have to go back or they'll have to try and diagnose from the pelvic scan. I am not sure what else there is to be said aside from hope it's not too shitty for you.

AnyWalls · 14/03/2019 21:06

@mummymayhem18 FINALLY!

I knew that MN would have someone going through the same, I just didn't think it would take this long to find one!
I'm so sorry, it's a pain in the ass vagina
I'll take the advice of taking nurofen and paracetamol before I go.
I just want it over and done with tomorrow. I can't be arsing around with having to go back etc.

OP posts:
Missingstreetlife · 14/03/2019 21:09

You will have pelvic scan with full bladder, gel on your tummy and external scanner like when pregnant, then empty bladder for internal.

WeeDangerousSpike · 14/03/2019 21:11

Oh OP, it sounds awful.

I had a TV scan when pregnant because they couldn't find the placenta, I really panicked about it (for reasons not relevant to this) but I was surprised how little I felt it at all, and they seemed to only put it in right at the 'entrance', so to speak. Were your previous ones like that? Hopefully if your pain at the GP appt was more towards your cervix they won't get in far enough to cause you pain like that.

I had some post partum issues with vaginal pain and my GP gave me the lidocaine gel they use when fitting coils, I think it's called instilagel. It numbs the area - it takes a little while to work, but maybe that's something they can use to help?

Most of all I think you need to be very clear how much pain you are in even with no 'stimulus' so you really need them to do something to help you with that.

Here's hoping the abdominal one will show them all they need Flowers
