We have a couple coming over on Sunday for lunch.

I don't want either of them here. Nor does DH.

But it's unavoidable. So it's happening. So no "just don't have them" comments please as that's a whole other drama.

Anyway. In the past (when we enjoyed their company) I've cooked various things, roasts, lasagne, buffet type bread/cheese/salad etc.

Well. They're all too much effort for me to go to for them now. Jacket potatoes maybe.

What's the easiest group meal I can throw out. That will feed us, but not make the kitchen and loads of crockery dirty please?

Maybe a big bowl of pasta and a salad?

Saw this, maybe an idea for a simple lunch?

CharlyAngelic · 09/03/2019 08:41

Weetabix

ConstanzaAndSalieri · 09/03/2019 08:42

Norovirus on toast...

SilviaSalmon · 09/03/2019 08:42

Cook in the bag roast chicken. Aunt Bessie’s potatoes and some frozen peas.

Easy and little washing up.

gamerchick · 09/03/2019 08:44

Why is it you sorting it? Hand it over to your bloke and let him sort something. I have no idea why you're letting them come. Maybe have a long bath or something.

MaryPopppins · 09/03/2019 08:44

Yes my DH is very upset and stuck between and rock and a hard place.

He told them on the day how out of order they were and then repeated it at New Year during a phone call how much they'd hurt us and how they have no right saying things as they hardly ever make an effort to see us anyway. (Always us making the effort/driving 2+ hours to them)

What pisses me off the most is if he's having a down day he'll go to a "maybe they were right" place and think everything's his bad parenting (he's amazing) Angry fuckers.

Ha, in that case frozen pizzas, garlic bread and salad. You are concentrating on giving your ds a normal children's meal....

PeachRose · 09/03/2019 08:45

Flipping the thread for the "whole other drama" Grin

TheMuminator2 · 09/03/2019 08:47

ready made roast auntie bessies potatos precooked chicken do some veg easy

PeachRose · 09/03/2019 08:48

I would make them a cheese sandwich with some crisp on the side. It's good enough and not to much effort.

Crankybitch · 09/03/2019 08:48

Quiche & ready made salads, bread. No wine

jgjgjgjgjg · 09/03/2019 08:49

Let your DH decide on what to feed them, and cook it. And make sure you call out each and every insult or unpleasant comment about the foid or anything else extremely loudly and clearly.

TheMuminator2 · 09/03/2019 08:50

maybe drop their food on the dirtiest part of the floor....by acciden t of course....and when ur at the table only u will know and that could help you 'digest' their company and revenge is a roast served hot lol

BertrandRussell · 09/03/2019 08:55

Or you could stop being passive aggressive and either them then they are not welcome but your dh will make sure the children visit them regularly. Or sit down and have a proper conversation about the issues.

Crankybitch · 09/03/2019 08:57

Can you make something that needs to slow cook but smells delicious for dinner - something french with lots of garlic etc.

It can be in the oven cooking the whole time they are there eating their cold lunch but obviously not ready so they can’t have any?

AWishForWingsThatWork · 09/03/2019 08:57

Have your DH sort out the meal. They're his parents, you're allowing them to visit your children, but he can do the heavy lifting for their visit.

GottenGottenGotten · 09/03/2019 08:58

The op isn't being passive aggressive! I am, and lots of the people making suggestions are, but the op is genuinely looking for something that isn't going to take too much effort but will be an acceptable lunch.

MarthasGinYard · 09/03/2019 08:59

And personally abstain from any more competitive 'mini breaks' with them if offered.

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 09/03/2019 09:00

Go to "cook" and buy something?

Twerking9til5 · 09/03/2019 09:00

Whatever you have make sure that it is something you and the Dc really enjoy.

They are coming, just cook something nice that you all enjoy and keep the aggro level at as low a level as possible.

CharlyAngelic · 09/03/2019 09:01

Had not RTFT.
Ready made lasagne , side salad.
Shop bought dessert.
You could always talk to them.

blackcoffeeinbed · 09/03/2019 09:02

I take my hat off to you for biting your teeth and still having them over. My MIL is banned from my house and if she turned up on my doorstep the best she would get would be a raw omelette over her head. Your a better person than I am! I agree in your situation a simple pasta and salad tea will be fine. Good luck!.

KittyB52 · 09/03/2019 09:03

Personally, I think life is too short to eat food you don’t enjoy. So I would get some ready meals that you like, and serve those. Your in laws are awful, but there’s no need for you to suffer any more by having a crap lunch too.

Just seen Twerking’s post. Yup.

thegreylady · 09/03/2019 09:04

I love liver and onions, we are having it tonight!
People I wasn’t keen on I would buy an assortment of cold meat, a big bag of prepared salad and some baby new potatoes. I would add a bought dessert and a bottle of wine especially if they are driving.

Jocasta2018 · 09/03/2019 09:04

Well they seem extremely unpleasant so I can easily see why you feel obligated to host them but not want to make an effort!

There are some excellent pasta sauces on the market. Decant it into a jug before putting them in the microwave or heat gently on the stove as you cook the pasta - they'll never know you've not made it from scratch.
Buy a couple of bags of leafy salad, dress with a nice salad dressing, a bowl of small plum tomatoes & you're set to go.
Pudding - well it's Gü all the way! Get a selection of pots & let them choose which one they have. I've served up Gü pots when I've worked hard at the main course & they've always gone down well as there's something for everyone!

My partner's family are so fussy I've given up trying to cook for them. They looked at pesto pasta & a leaf salad as though it was from outer space & barely ate any of it. They did eat the Gü pots however.... So they either come over for fish & chips as our local chippy is excellent or we order in (or buy from the supermarket) pizza that they've chosen.
