AIBU to feel unbelievably sad that Shamima Bergum’s baby has died.

The poor mite simply didn’t have a chance in the world he was born in to.

Sad

Bertram if Begum has committed a criminal offence in Syria then surely she should be tried there.
Do you think the woman who tried to bring a lot of tramadol into Egypt should have been returned to UK and tried here?

nancy75 · 13/03/2019 12:48

She can’t be both a silly little tart and a criminal mastermind who’s a serious threat to this country, surely?

You don't need to be a criminal mastermind to be a threat - all you need is a car and a crowd of people to drive it in to.

BejamNostalgia · 13/03/2019 12:56

'Silly little tart' - kind of a contradiction when describing a young woman who has become a devout Muslim and fully covers herself.

Oh dear. That did make me giggle. Those things don’t actually make you virtuous. In fact an awful lot of Muslims would argue that they’re not true either because being in ISIS or wearing a burka doesn’t make you a good or devout Muslim.

And yes, if you’re prepared to travel to a warzone and overlook genocide, war crimes, murder and terrorism just so you can get your rocks of with a Jihadi who looks dead ‘ard with his big gun. You are a silly little tart.

BejamNostalgia · 13/03/2019 12:57

I do love the hypocrisy. Joining a terror organisation - fine, look the other way. Call an ISIS bride a tart: how very dare you!

woodhill · 13/03/2019 13:00

Isn't it what is in your heart that makes you virtuous or how you help others not your appearance?

acciocat · 13/03/2019 13:14

I was a bit Hmm about the ‘silly little tart’ comment but only because it risks discussion getting sidetracked onto something inconsequential, which detracts from the fact that Begum is a terrorist.

That said, your posts have been superb Bejam... intelligent and insightful. Very refreshing after some of the idiotic posts on here.... eg: that Begum could be bundled into a car by consular staff and whisked back to the U.K., or that she had no choice but to search out ISIS and travel across several borders to Syria... and as for the contradictions: ‘I’m all for upholding the law’/ ‘ooops didn’t realise that means capital punishment...’ !!

So thanks Bejam for the voice of sanity!
And woodhill - absolutely, being virtuous is nothing to do with how you look; it’s what’s in your heart AND your actions.

Bluestitch · 13/03/2019 13:19

Yes some excellent comments from Bejam, you too acciocat and nancy too. It is surprising just how clueless about some of the basic facts many of those positioning themselves as morally superior on this thread appear to be. I'd be doing at least a quick google before confidently pronouncing what's what.

Lizzie48 · 13/03/2019 13:38

@BejamNostalgia the ISIS brides are devout, in their loyalty to their extremist brand of Islam. They very likely believe that ISIS ideology is the only pure brand of Islam. There is justification within the Qu'ran. The Jihad texts, however, are far more widely held to be metaphorical for our battle against sin within ourselves. (That's how I understand it, I might be wrong.)

Similarly, the wars of religion in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries were fought by very devout people as well.

woodhill · 13/03/2019 13:47

Yes like the wars in France persecuting the Huguenots. That was in less enlightened times though - up to 500 years ago. It's scary that this mentality is still with us and has poisoned the UK and other supposedly civilised places.

Just can't see why people can't live and let live. If they want to be "devout"? Fine but stop inflicting it on everyone

CoolCarrie · 13/03/2019 18:30

Totally agree wood hill. . Islamic countries never had an enlightenment period like western countries, no free thinking, no rights for women, or gay people , they are medieval, or earlier in their mindset. There are only 3 things in my opinion that religion is good for ; art, architecture and music, the rest is smoke and mirrors.

WrathOfGrapes · 13/03/2019 21:01

It's unfair to say that Islamic countries have never had a period of enlightenment after the fall of Rome and all the way up to the Renaissance, the Islamic world far preceded the western one not only science and technology, but in looking past religious restrictions and developing a stable system of rule and duty of care to citizens. It's only within the last century that you see a significant difference in our outlooks on issues such as gay rights (this obviously applies far more to urban areas).

Agree with you about religion, though. It's always done far more damage then good.
