AIBU to ask if you changed your opinion about Brexit

We had a lot of Brexit threads but I think not about this topic. As somebody who does not live in Britain I wonder if you changed your opinion about Brexit now that you heard that a hard Brexit is most likely. Would you vote different if there was a second vote?

What’s the point in marching on the 23rd, one week before we leave?
I fully support your right to protest but what a complete waste of your time & money.

Nah, it’s gonna be great and more than worth it.

Thanks for your opinions though.

BorisBogtrotter · 08/03/2019 08:26

"We already have a people’s vote..sorry you didn’t like the result."

Democracy is not a one of event.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 08/03/2019 08:31

I do wonder whether Leavers would be happy with all of the potential Leave scenario's that might occur at this point:

-crash out with no deal
-leave under the WA and then end up with extended negotiations, about under what terms we leave. (very small chance now of this scenario, but including it for completeness). While we negotiate we remain effectively in the EU but with no say as to how the EU is run.
-an extension to article 50 followed either by crash out or a soft brexit where we remain in the customs union.

Are you really happy with all of these? Would you accept all of these? Because this is what Leave looks like at present.

Disfordarkchocolate · 08/03/2019 08:37

I wish the referendum had been held on the basis of a minimum turnout of 50-60%, but then again I'd make voting compulsory.

BorisBogtrotter · 08/03/2019 09:15

"What’s the point in marching on the 23rd, one week before we leave? "

Democracy.

SchrodingersBox · 08/03/2019 09:17

Yes, voted Remain would vote Leave now.

FriendOrFaux · 08/03/2019 09:47

3 weeks to go...

doIreallyneedto · 08/03/2019 09:51

@FriendOrFaux - 3 weeks to go...

3 weeks to go to what? The parliament are shitting themselves over the prospect of no deal. They will have presumably voted to either request an extension or to accept the WA by then. If they accept the WA, it will still mean an extension as there isn't time to sort the necessary legalities by then.

You're going to have to put your fireworks in storage for a bit longer (hopefully forever)

KidLorneRoll · 08/03/2019 10:00

So 8 pages and still not one single reason as to why Brexit is a good idea.

Is anyone surprised by that, because I'm sure as shit not.

Frankiestein402 · 08/03/2019 10:05

Surferjet, we are paying less than 0.7% of our gdp for free access to a trade block encompassing one third of global gdp.
In addition we get a raft of agencies emea, easa, euratom etc that we will have to replicate - good luck in getting that access and those agemcies for less.
Given the sums we have thrown away since the vote, the decades long hit to our gdp, the descent to 7th I think your wish to escape paying into the EU has already cost multiple times our Contribution.

Once this first phase of our vanity project is decided we will then be embroiled in years of negotiation for an EU deal - and you still believe its all worthwhile, why?

FriendOrFaux · 08/03/2019 10:07

doireallyneedto

Quite. Hopefully things are clarified this week, but I'm not holding my breath.
As I've said previously, I believe there'll be a series of extensions. I don't think we'll ever leave in all honesty.

BorisBogtrotter · 08/03/2019 10:12

"The EU are sick of our attempts too get special treatmentgringrin a net contributer !!"

The 4th largest nominal contributor.

The 2nd largest net contributor

7th largest net contributor per capita.

Our net contribution makes up about 5% of the EU's total budget.

Making out like the EU desperately need us for the money is an erroneous argument.

Parker231 · 08/03/2019 11:03

@surferjet - your racism is horrendous. For someone like myself from the EU I find the tone of your posts awful.

BorisBogtrotter · 08/03/2019 11:06

Surfer really is dreadful.

We can't mention the reason for her vote because she gets upset.

Dinosauratemydaffodils · 08/03/2019 11:15

Voted remain and would vote remain again. As would most of the people we know.

However brexit, the attitudes we've encountered every time we've been in England since the vote and the sheer incompetence of the Government has led to me changing my feelings on another Scottish Independence referendum. Feelings which are being cemented by the attitude of said Government...it's ok to leave one Union without a plan but not okay to let people vote on leaving another...doesn't sound like a union of equals does it.

Dh who is mostly Scottish and Irish but who has always put his nationality down as "British" now puts Scottish.

Df who voted leave is now dead. MiL who voted leave despite coming from border country in NI would now vote remain.

everythingisginandroses · 08/03/2019 11:22

I am very sad that the UK is likely to break up over this. It bothers me more than anything. Watching all the WalkingDeadLeaverPlanks slowly realise that their South American and Antipodean wines are imported under EU trade agreements will not be much consolation at all.

themoomoo · 08/03/2019 11:34

The UK will be sitting outside the fence watching for rainbow unicorns
I've nearly got a full row now!

BorisBogtrotter · 08/03/2019 11:38

"I've nearly got a full row now"

We remainers stopped playing Brexit Bingo months ago because every time a leaver posts you get a full row by the end of the first page.

You might have full row but still no justifiable arguments for leaving.

Parker231 · 08/03/2019 14:25

Brexit: May says if her deal fails, 'we may never leave' EU – Politics live - The Guardian.

Just seen this - please hope her deal and the UK doesn’t leave.

FriendOrFaux · 08/03/2019 14:38

She's been saying that for a while now.

PierreBezukov · 08/03/2019 14:45

Not being able to leave the EU fills me with dread.

It's like the 2 referenda they had in the Republic of Ireland on the EU - the people voted 'the wrong way' the first time and had to be told to behave themselves and go back again and vote 'the right way'.

Hotel California.

doIreallyneedto · 08/03/2019 15:20

@PierreBezukov - It's like the 2 referenda they had in the Republic of Ireland on the EU - the people voted 'the wrong way' the first time and had to be told to behave themselves and go back again and vote 'the right way'.

Not quite what happened. There were concerns about the impact of the Lisbon treaty on sovereignty issues. We rejected it on those grounds. The second time round, the EU had provided legally binding guarantees stating that Lisbon will not affect key areas of Irish sovereignty.

This was democracy in action. Question was asked. People responded and rejected it. The reasons for the rejection were investigated. Changes were made and guarantees put in place to address those concerns. The referendum was passed on the basis of these changes.

bellinisurge · 08/03/2019 15:24

I've heard this stupid nonsense trotted out about the 2 referenda in Ireland. Make changes and people feel differently and vote differently. Isn't that exactly what May is trying and failing to do right now? As well as play "chicken ".

Slowknitter · 08/03/2019 15:33

I voted remain and would still. A member of my family voted leave, but admits that she did it out of a general pissed-offness with things in general, the powers that be etc. When she woke up to the news that Leave had won, she thought 'Oh crap, what have we done?!' and would vote remain if she could go back in time. I suspect she's not the only one, but not many would admit it.

Sparkles07 · 08/03/2019 15:41

I didn't vote and would have voted remain.
