To think being slim should be normal for most people.

By slim i mean sizes 8 to 12.

Obviously you get a minority who are not in this range naturally but for 80% of people this size should be natural, say they eat a reasonable diet of between 2000-3000 calories.

Im so sick of people at work making out i am abnormally thin for being a size 10. I watch what I eat but dont deprive myself. The same people making me out to be lucky to be slim eat fried chicken or pizza for lunch and seem to be able to demolish a whole pack of biscuits at 3 o clock.

Aibu to think that the normal human man/woman should be a size 8-12 and that to attain or maintain this does not require super human discipline or strength.

Dh never mentioned my weight in a derogatory way not back then He has never mentioned my weight at all in all the time we have been together ................27 years.

HelenaDove · 04/03/2019 20:26

No worries Dorset The reason i find this emotive is because of how i was treated.

RomanyQueen1 · 04/03/2019 20:28

TheCountess

That's still a huge difference. I'm usually a 12 but it varies depending on brand.
That is still a huge difference, and very interesting thank you Thanks

I have to say that if I ever see anyone out running who looks like they’re struggling a little I never think anything other than ‘good for them’ (and I don’t mean that to sound patronising or anything) just that so many people’s reaction is ‘why bother I could walk faster than that’ etc.

And I say that as a runner (of sorts...think Phoebe from Friends) who knows how bloody hard it is!

user1457017537 · 04/03/2019 20:32

RomanyQueen1 I remember Miss World and the contestants. My sisters and I used to put on our own Miss World show!

when we were little of course! Lol

Brilliantidiot · 04/03/2019 20:52

I think I read or learned at school (back in the dark ages) that a few hundred years ago it was seen as desirable and you were obviously of 'higher class' if you were pale and overweight. This indicated that you spent a lot of time inside, rather than the poorer who generally worked outside, so you didn't get tanned. And being overweight meant you had enough money to have enough to eat. The poorer didn't have enough to eat, worked in physical outdoor jobs, and therefore were thinner and tanned.
Funny how attitudes change.

A lot of the issue is marketing and advertising. And money. Where I work since the sugar tax it's now cheaper for a pint of diet coke than full fat. When pointed out most people will opt for the cheaper version because it's cheaper, not because it's got less sugar.
But it's a small dent in a big problem. When it's more expensive to buy a bag of apples than a multipack of chocolate, those who have to choose will choose the cheapest option when for instance buying something for packed lunches.
We need more initiatives like the sugar tax I think to make it more feasible for people to make the right choice.
And I've just been to the shop on my way to work, a boxed salad was over £4, a pot noodle £1 - anyone with only a £5 left is going to choose the cheapest option.
I didn't buy either because I'll get fed at work 😁

user1457017537 · 04/03/2019 20:57

I agree that unhealthy food is much cheaper. I buy fruit, salad and vegetables and spend a significant amount of money they are certainly not cheap anymore. I noticed today that a small chip roll was £1.75 in a fish and chip ship today which I thought was a lot.

I remember wearing my underwear a sash thing we made and mums wedding veil. Those were the days Grin
They all wanted to ease world poverty and be ambassadors for peace. I always thought the main judge Eric whatever his name was, was weird though.

user1457017537 · 04/03/2019 21:04

Romany do you remember the one who married Dean Martin? We used to walk about in my mum’s stiletto shoes, or my nan’s and our swimsuits!

Applesaregreenandred · 04/03/2019 21:08

YABU to be so ignorant to think that the majority of women could eat 2000 - 3000 cal per day and remain a size 8-12.

This would only apply to somebody who was young, tall and fairly active so for someone who was older, shorter and more sedentary (I.e. me as I’m 5’3” and 50) it would be impossible. Oh and the less you weigh, the fewer calories you need to maintain your weight,

In fact the myth that most women need 2000 cal per day to maintain their weight is probably part of the reason so many people are overweight.

RomanyQueen1 · 04/03/2019 21:12

I'm not sure, might have done and not known she married him. All the famous men were there though, I can see why it wouldn't work today, but lovely for the innocent. I loved it, that bloke was Eric Morley? and his wife, can't remember her name.
I used to feel so glamorous Grin

user1457017537 · 04/03/2019 21:14

Julia Morley

Dorsetdays · 04/03/2019 21:15

@brilliantidiot. That’s correct, it was Coco Chanel that made tanning popular back in the 20’s, before then it was definitely seen as a sign of being ‘working class’ and being outdoors. 😳

RomanyQueen1 · 04/03/2019 21:22

user That's it. Julia. Grin

My dd went through a spell of being a 17th century woman (don't ask)
She wouldn't go out all bloody summer and was as white as a ghost.
Everyone had great tans and thought she must be ill. Grin
Definitely wc or considered romany if you had a good tan.

Dorsetdays · 04/03/2019 21:29

no one can argue that it carries the same weight as fat shaming. You will never be denied a job on the basis of your weight. You will never be accused of being lazy/ dirty/ smelly on account of your weight. You will never be called disgusting on account of your weight. You will never have magazine articles devoted to how NOT to be a skinny person. You will never have people frothing at the mouth because Cosmo dared to have a skinny girl on the cover once.

What a load of shit.
Ive had shop assistants, at their work, who want my money call me a bitch based on my size, they admitted this to my face. I wish i had the balls at the time to report them. I now mostly shop online to avoid this issue
Ive been called not a real woman and told no man would want me as real women have curves.
Ive been callled anorexic, bulimic, invisible, a bag of bones, skeletor, heroin addict and yes disgusting.
Ive been denied work as i obviously am 'too small to lift xyz.
What i eat is criticized, enough so im now uncomfortable eating in public for fear of the comments i will get

Weight shaming either way is wrong, nasty and it bloody hurts. How dare you say it dont affect us the same?
Like many fat people i fear clothes shopping and eating in public due to comments about my weight but i gather thats ok cos im thin right?

AleFailTrail · 04/03/2019 23:29

Oh and regarding the sugar tax, it’s great unless you’re allergic to phenylalanine (aspartame) like my OH is. He is being penalised for something not of his doing (most diet drinks and flavoured waters contain the stuff). Certain artificial flavours and sweeteners also increase appetite as the body doesn’t recognise it as nutrients.

Dorsetdays · 05/03/2019 05:58

@alefailtrail. I wasn’t aware of allergies to aspartame so hadn’t thought about that. Although, as a coeliac, I am well aware of how allergies etc can disadvantage you as gluten free alternatives are way more expensive!

Gwenhwyfar · 05/03/2019 07:08

"And I've just been to the shop on my way to work, a boxed salad was over £4, a pot noodle £1 - anyone with only a £5 left is going to choose the cheapest option. "

Yes. I'm always arguing in favour of subsidised healthy, convenient foods. Usually met with "people should cook their own food from scratch, have a budget and a meal plan". I think we have to accept that some of us are not going to go back to cooking from scratch no matter what and make it easier and cheaper to eat convenient healthy foods.

Things that penalise you for not eating bad food should be banned e.g. a meal deal where it costs more if you don't get the Mars bar.

Gwenhwyfar · 05/03/2019 07:10

" He is being penalised for something not of his doing (most diet drinks and flavoured waters contain the stuff). "

Not really. He doesn't have to buy either the sugar or the aspartame stuff. He could just buy other foods if he wanted to.
Would you say that a person who can't eat gluten is 'being penalised' if the gluten free stuff is more expensive?

Gwenhwyfar · 05/03/2019 07:14

Supersize vs Superskinny?!

To be fair, I don't remember the people in Supersize and Superskinny arguing it wasn't possible for them to gain/lose weight. They went on it as a way of changing their diet because they couldn't do it alone.
I remember a really funny episode when a skinny, gay barman who worked in nightclubs told the lady opposite him that dinner was just a couple of vodkas.
The people on that series were completely honest about what they eat, they weren't in denial.

Deadlysinner · 05/03/2019 07:17

I'm size 10 and if I ate 2000 calories a day I'd quickly put on a lot of weight, even going to the gym or walking several times a week so it is rather a lot of effort for me to stay slim.

crispysausagerolls · 05/03/2019 07:18

Fuck me people look for excuses re being overweight!!!!

How can someone talk about lack of education being a factor in this country?! The government did a huge roll out on healthy eating and awareness about it and education is everywhere. Any excuse!!!!
