To wonder if Momo actually exists

Have any of you actually seen it for yourself? Or is it an internet hoax?

Here it is. It's the same video but not the same upload or title as the one linked to earlier but it is still clearly titled as a Momo video and it is not on YouTube kids.

Justanotherlurker · 28/02/2019 21:49

he clip also came about after the media furore and I dare say as a result of the media furore.

So trolls (most likely teenagers) have uploaded videos since the initial hysteria (it was the media amplifying some social media outcry btw) and that is now proof that she does exist.

This is now becoming so convoluted in a weird back peddling way.

Whats comical about this situation is that across many other forums when this discussion comes up is something along the lines is "blame mumsnet/loose women", and before someone dives in with a pseudo intellectual post its not even men making these comments.

lpchill · 28/02/2019 21:54

The image and the whole story of images being spliced into videos or sending messages was circulating last July ish through reddit. The image was from a Japanese artist.

Use it as a reminder to always check what your kids are watching and have an adult discussion with them about the internet

Frequency · 28/02/2019 21:55

I never said Momo existed as in the threat is real. I said the boy probably wasn't lying about seeing a Momo clip on YouTube where Momo tells you to slash your wrists or your parents will die. I fully agree that it is trolls and the uploads of Momo are clearly marked as Momo clips. Youtube has not been hacked by Momo. Any parent who allows their child unsupervised access to YouTube is either an idiot or doesn't understand what YouTube is and should therefore educate themselves before letting their kids loose on the internet.

sagradafamiliar · 28/02/2019 21:56

Just teenagers can probably think of better things to do, I wouldn't be surprised if it was an idiot parent cobbling these videos together now, to 'prove' the hoax was real all along or for likes and shares on FB.
Like pp said, it's like an episode of Black Mirror.

AnnbWinters14 · 28/02/2019 22:00

It’s very unfortunately that an art piece can be used for such horrible ends. It can be scary to see the piece, as Japanese artists can create very scary looking pieces, such as this ‘mother bird’. For what I was able to understand is the hype that is surrounding Momo atm that can be more hazardous. This has been going on for some time now. i believe, even that this was considered ‘fake news’ by some charities it’s important for parents to be vigilant always when it’s internet related. I was able to find a YouTube video that explained how momo has been used. By watching it I found that maybe teenagers are more prone to follow it, mostly because many youtubers are following this ‘momo challenge’:

I haven’t seen any ‘momo’ pictures showing up in children videos though, As pp explored that may be a separate thing. But kids talk amongst themselves. If anyone knows about momo, and this is so spread now, they will talk about it. Some more vulnerable will naturally be scared about it, and is very easy for our imagination to flourish...

Justanotherlurker · 28/02/2019 22:10

Its probably a mix, teenagers have definitely taken it up though. It's a rebellious instinct against the fake moral outcry and calls for more intervention.

It's not only black mirror it shows that there is a modern day Mary Whitehouse in a lot of the population.

Frequency · 28/02/2019 22:16

My teenager has admitted she has been sending and receiving Momo memes for months usually tagged with things like finish my art coursework for me or you will wake up with Momo in your bed. She says Momo was a thing and has been for ages but Momo as an actual threat has only existed since the media picked up on it and exaggerated it.

She doesn't know anyone who has been hacked by Momo, accidentally stumbled across Momo or texted or What's Apped with Momo. And no-one she knows or follows online has hurt themselves or considered hurting themselves because of Momo. It was a shit, mildly amusing meme until the Fail et al got hold of it and blew it out of proportion.

Justanotherlurker · 28/02/2019 22:17

Looks like some are desperately still in the "cope" stage then Annb

Do you know where this momo initially spread a few years ago, teenage sites such as Tumblr, it became an ironic meme then.

The amount of cope and starting a conversation back peddling is becoming just as cringy as the initial hysterical panic.

user1482956724 · 28/02/2019 22:28

The link video shared is marked momo.

The hoax centres around momo popping up, hidden in kids videos.

2 entirely different things.

slashlover · 28/02/2019 22:37

*The boy isn't lying. That clip exists. It was linked to earlier in the thread

Actually PP said My 6 yr old child heard about it at school the other day an boy in the upper year had it popped up and asked him to get a knife and cut his wrists open or his parents would be killed, many children inc mine have been totally traumatised by this MOMO.

The video was uploaded yesterday so unless 'the other day' was yesterday then he's lying. There are two threads on here plus numerous twitter posts, not one could find any links until AFTER the hysteria.

ThunderStorms · 28/02/2019 22:54

I have had to discuss it with my child. Why? Because his friends are sharing clips with each other and winding each other up. My child is not fussed and knows it’s all silly, but I wanted to be sure.

The thing is, their parents don’t care. They have unchecked access to the internet and watch things that I wouldn’t.

But then they try to scare others with it. Of course it’s a hoax, but you can’t just dismiss and ignore it and pretend it’ll just go away. No matter how untrue it is (although it is out there now - in the form of trolling videos. Young children not know they’re trolling videos), children are being scared by it.

ChesterGreySideboard · 28/02/2019 23:07

The thing is, their parents don’t care. They have unchecked access to the internet and watch things that I wouldn’t.

And this is the problem. You can be doing everything right. You can always keep an eye on what they are doing but all it takes is for one other person to not bother and it all spreads round.
Not unlike nits.

Smellbellina · 28/02/2019 23:15

Not unlike nits 😂

Relightmyfire2017 · 01/03/2019 08:02

We all have different opinions on this - is it a hoax or is it genuine? At the end of the day even if it is a hoax one sick little fucker decided to put it out there to scare the crap out of kids. Some are more impressionable than others. THAT is the issue.

chillpizza · 01/03/2019 08:27

These types of videos in general have been around as long as sharing videos online has been. It’s not new. I remember many as a child where the girl from the ring would suddenly appear on screen or another scary looking person screaming in the middle of s car driving down a road or other random innocent things. We all used to share them as children/teens you never knew what was about to appear in a video your mate sent you. It’s just these days it makes it to the papers and scaremongered across Facebook/Twitter. Along with parents giving toddlers/young children free access means it’s blown out of proportion.

SileneOliveira · 01/03/2019 09:54

We all have different opinions on this - is it a hoax or is it genuine?

Well no, you can't have an opinion on a matter of fact. The fact is that it is a hoax. Hype spread by parents and the media and no evidence whatsoever that it did any harm to anyone, anywhere. You can't have an "opinion" that water is wet or the sun is hot.

The original piece of art wasn't created with the intention of scaring children. Some children have been scared by the hoax - by the hype, parents freaking out, schools overreacting and sending out letters, poorly thought-out presentations at assemblies.

People are so, so gullible.

ThunderStorms · 01/03/2019 10:02

The fact is that it is a hoax.

The fact is that it started as a hoax.

Witchesandwizards · 01/03/2019 10:19

My year 5 DD is freaked out.

To be honest it's been completely on my periphery - I have seen headlines but haven't actually read anything. I kind of put it in the same bracket as the killer clowns thing a couple of years ago.

Yesterday at school she told me that the 'other' year 5 class were on school iPads in ICT, and a Momo picture popped up on all devices, and some children had a message telling them to cut their throats with a knife or their family will be killed.

I literally don't know what to make of it. I have spoken to other kids and parents and it did happen, so she's not making it up. She could be exaggerating - or the other kids could be embellishing what happened. But WTF? School iPads.

I just told her that it's a picture on a screen that she controls and can turn off. It's no more real than a Disney Princess....

Ps. I'm an older parent ;-)

IIIIIIII · 01/03/2019 10:24

I have spoken to other kids and parents and it did happen, so she's not making it up.
Did you speak to the teacher? That will not of happened, no one is hacking locked down school ipads to pop up a picture.

paisho · 01/03/2019 10:30

Yesterday at school she told me that the 'other' year 5 class were on school iPads in ICT, and a Momo picture popped up on all devices, and some children had a message telling them to cut their throats with a knife or their family will be killed.

Assuming this actually happened, my guess is that one of the kids in said class decided that it'd be hilarious to AirDrop a picture of Momo to every iPad in the vicinity.

chillpizza · 01/03/2019 11:10

Seriously. Hackers who can hack into locked schools/YouTube/fortnite/minecraft and where ever else they have apparently hacked are not going to bother with childlike stuff like this. Common it’s not worth their time they don’t earn anything from it. If they hacked into any of the above they would be doing it to steal your personal information not scare children.

I think common sense has left the building in too many cases.

honeylane · 01/03/2019 11:50

It's a hoax and just shows how little people know about the internet/computers to actually believe this rubbish

I spent about an hour last night actively trying to find it/download it (whatever it is, it isn't clear). Could find anything.

honeylane · 01/03/2019 11:51

"Yesterday at school she told me that the 'other' year 5 class were on school iPads in ICT, and a Momo picture popped up on all devices, and some children had a message telling them to cut their throats with a knife or their family will be killed"

Did not happen
