Have any of you actually seen it for yourself? Or is it an internet hoax?

I was sitting with my son who attends a special education school (he is autistic).
I happened to be reading the article in the Daily Mail and not wanting to frighten him mentioned it as casually as possible.
I was absolutely horrified to hear him tell me very matter of fact that
A he knew what I was talking about, and
B some older children at school have been exposed to this horrible craze!
Apparently it's infiltrated Peppa Pig, YouTube and WhatsApp.
It may have been an OTT reaction but I immediately sent his year head an email to alert her.
She replied this morning saying an urgent letter to parents was being sent out today.
He's come home from school today and apparently all hell has broken loose at school, because apparently some of the children had been watching it.
Correct me if I'm wrong but we as parents should be monitoring who and what their kids are doing online.I'm pissed off with the attitude from some parents who think that it's the sole responsibility of school.

grumiosmum · 28/02/2019 18:46

well according to tonight's BBC Radio 4 news it's completely Fake News.

They couldn't find a single source to corroborate its existence.

JollyAndBright · 28/02/2019 18:52

it’s a hoax that has been around for ages.

Some internet trolls have ‘made’ the videos by downloading cartoons and inserting these clips into the ‘advert’ style slots

JollyAndBright · 28/02/2019 18:53

There are a lot of those ‘proof’ videos......
the proof was probably created for the video.

Aragog · 28/02/2019 18:53

ChesterGreySideboard

I wasn't single you and your school out specifically, it was more in general to the comments throughout of some schools response to this.

Fair enough - your school responded to the actual children in your school where it was being spoken about, and it sounds like it was done in a general reminder way rather than specifically about MOMO. That's not what most schools on this thread seem to be doing.

Sadly, many schools in the UK do not address Online Safety very effectively from what I have seen and read over tie, and courses and training I have been on over the years. Many teachers never ever touch upon it at all it seems, until these kind of things come about and then they over react without much knowledge.

YourSarcasmIsDripping · 28/02/2019 18:59

Our school did it in a sensible way too. Nothing made, just a general reminder about internet safety, strangers and what to do if you see something you don't like online regardless of the platform. No youtube,no peppa, no suicides,no momo.

slashlover · 28/02/2019 19:01

@strivingforjustice Have you read any of this thread?

The thing with MOMO , yes it exists.

Yes, it does.

It began with a piece of art stolen in Japan 4 years ago and distorted to use to infiltrate kids on Whattsapp , it would try to illicit information and ask them questions and lay down a suicide challenge.

This is a hoax, there is no proof.

Recently it has infiltrated You Tube Kids , the sick distorted bulging eyed scary female avatar pops up on clips from as inocouos as Peppa Pig , Roblox , Royal High and various others .It s either hacked or lifeted clips, cut spliced with the MOMO Aavatar and it’s sickening threats.

There is no proof, it is a hoax. Not one person has been able to post a link to a video where this happens.

It is incredibly sinister as it disgustingly commands children to harm themselves or others that if they don’t their parents etc will be killed,.
As adults we can all minimise this as trolling or whatever and the cynical eye rolling of the press picking up on it but the psychological effect on children is awful.

It doesn't.

My 6 yr old child heard about it at school the other day an boy in the upper year had it popped up and asked him to get a knife and cut his wrists open or his parents would be killed, many children inc mine have been totally traumatised by this MOMO.

The boy is lying.

To the extent of not sleeping, crying , nightmares.Young children are not emotionally equipped to deal with this type of horror.

Parents/the school/the media are the ones terrifying children by sharing this and posting the picture everywhere.

You Tube remain in a state of inertia and only made a public response to it a couple of days ago, admonishing responsibility.
It is all well and good to keep saying you should watch what your children see but it is impossible unless you are by there side and even then still cannot prevent a hack or pop up , once a child has seen something horrific like that it’s an engram... imprinted on the brain.

YouTube has not been hacked for goodness sake. The only popups on YouTube are adverts and unless youtube does no checks at all this is not happening.

So far NSPCC, the Samaritans, BBC, The Guardian etc have said it's a hoax. It's not happening. There are no popups/hacks/Momo popping up in videos.
Sadly children are not safe in their own homes , and forgetting the hysteria etc , the multi billion pound tech companies our kids use and watch need to do more. As an adult I wouldn’t watch a horror film of this nature by choice, young children exposed to this detritus and simply can’t deal with these at their tender years.
It has been reported over and over by people , it is still happening, if clever evil people can access this technology to cause harm then the tech giants making all the profit must be do more about it. Wether it is an uphill battle or not.

user1482956724 · 28/02/2019 19:04

And still no sign of a link to the so called "truth" because my child, nephew, best friend daughters niece twice removed from royalty has seen it.

Give me the proof, otherwise its total bollocks, attention seeking parents and drama queens.

slashlover · 28/02/2019 19:10

@Relightmyfire2017

B some older children at school have been exposed to this horrible craze!

Very possibly from the parents who got freaked out and decided to show the picture to their children.

Apparently it's infiltrated Peppa Pig, YouTube and WhatsApp.
It may have been an OTT reaction but I immediately sent his year head an email to alert her.

It's not, that's what the rumours say, so that's what people have been telling their kids.

She replied this morning saying an urgent letter to parents was being sent out today.

No, no, no! That's just spreading the hoax!

He's come home from school today and apparently all hell has broken loose at school, because apparently some of the children had been watching it.

It's not real so more likely it went - parents got letter-parents spoke to their children - children googled. Or the children are telling porkies.

Correct me if I'm wrong but we as parents should be monitoring who and what their kids are doing online.I'm pissed off with the attitude from some parents who think that it's the sole responsibility of school.

The thing is, people ARE monitoring their kids. Not one parent who monitors has seen this, they've only heard from their brother's dog's aunt's child. Or some kids who told their kid at school.

silvercuckoo · 28/02/2019 19:18

My son came home very distressed as older children were telling him about momo who lives in laptops and jumps out to kill everyone. The school sent home in his bag a printout of the pdf from the "national online safety" which has "MOMO" in large print and high hazard signs around it. Now he absolutely believes it's true.

Melkim40 · 28/02/2019 19:25

I work in a primary school. There is a notice up in the staff room about it. I overheard a couple of boys in my class talk about Momo today. I asked them if either of them had seen it. One said his dad had shown him a picture and if he saw it, he was to tell him. The other one said no he hadn't. Don't know what to think really!

Skullbiker · 28/02/2019 19:31

No the whole momo thing is a giant hoax made bigger by the media - according to a piece on Radio 4 this afternoon ( Thursday 28th.) Parents overreacted to add to the social panic.

NatureIs · 28/02/2019 19:34

It wasn't a thing until everyone talking about it made it a thing. Now loads of morons will be adding it to videos & other content. It's like an episode of Black Mirror.

CouldntThink · 28/02/2019 20:14

Our school did a talk to all the pupils (primary) and have scared a good number of them.

helenbackandbeyond · 28/02/2019 20:15

Seriously ?

NothingOnTellyAgain · 28/02/2019 20:29

It's an opportunity for an internet conversation IMO

They might meet people online who try to talk them into stuff

The picture will be of another child etc not a fucking terrifying one

Kudos to the artist though that image is really disturbing

And I thought pinhead and his crew were scary...

Justanotherlurker · 28/02/2019 21:05

It's an opportunity for an internet conversation IMO

As if, the people who ramped up the hysteria want more government intervention and businesses to bend to their terms, its the modern day Mary Whitehouse

BejamNostalgia · 28/02/2019 21:13

Now loads of morons will be adding it to videos & other content.

Yep. People are making money off this. People are uploading ‘momo’ videos to YouTube supposedly for information or putting up pics of their kids talking about their supposed run ins with Momo - people are clicking on that and they get paid. This is in the international media, that’s a hella lot of clicks.

chillpizza · 28/02/2019 21:21

It seems to be the older parents in the playground who are panicking and by older I mean those who didn’t have internet lessons in primary themselves. They seem to know so little about the internet they freak out about everything where as those of us who have been on it for years and use it regularly know it’s a load of bollocks.

My children have seen the photo I showed them chicken legs and all so it wasn’t something to search out, no screaming or crying or madness here. Yet others have purely spoken about it at all and it’s led to children at yr5/6 climbing back into mummies and daddies beds.

Adults are the ones scaring the children by the way it’s being out across not the stupid meme and if your three year old has seen it on YouTube your the idiot for letting them in the first place.

Our school sent out information today witch from a quick glance I could tell was bollocks and I filed it away in the bin. Pandering to panicked who don’t understand the internet and how it works.

Frequency · 28/02/2019 21:28

The boy is lying

The boy isn't lying. That clip exists. It was linked to earlier in the thread. I believe it is spliced into a Peppa Pig cartoon however it is not on YouTube kids and is titled 'disturbing Momo Peppa clip very disturbing' and tagged with the hashtags #Momo#ScaryMomo#MomoChallenge.

Momo does indeed tell viewers that their parents will be killed if they don't slash their wrists but any parent allowing their child to watch a video entitled disturbing Momo Peppa clip is an idiot and not fit to have a child or an internet connection.

The clip also came about after the media furore and I dare say as a result of the media furore.

sagradafamiliar · 28/02/2019 21:37

Oh so it's the hard of thinking (and reading judging by the fact they clearly haven't read the thread) like relight who are responsible for these scaremongering school newsletters being sent out. My child can't understand why her school would lie to her despite me having spent the evening reassuring her it's utter nonsense. Thanks.
There was even a woman claiming her son saw 'momo' pop up on minecraft although apparently he said nothing about it until asked. Lies.

user1482956724 · 28/02/2019 21:37

#Frequency

If it exists share the link.

sagradafamiliar · 28/02/2019 21:41

Woman live on This Morning* that should've said.

Older parents? It seems the opposite here, looking at the local FB noticeboard and listening to playground hyperbole (mind you I have been mistaken for ds's grandma a few times....so everyone probably feels younger than me!)

As for the second bit, you do get that all children are different? One of mine I could show and she would laugh and think it is just freaky, one would have nightmares the other would obsess and it would cause him difficulties for ages.....because they are all different, and there is no one right 'chillpizza' way of handling stuff like this.

As for the bit about yr5/6 children crawling back into mummy and daddies beds.....Ah fuck it, I can't be arsed, it just comes across as being a bit of a dick.
