To ask how to treat a 10mo with a temp of 40.2

Whoevenknowswhattodo · 26/02/2019 23:04

Shamelessly posted here for traffic Blush

Ds2 is 10months. He hasn't been unwell, not even snotty . Yesterday afternoon at lunchtime he wouldn't eat which is unlike him. Cried and crashed out and slept most of the day and night. He had a temp of 38-39.5 all day despite regular Calpol and ibuprofen.
Today he's been the same, eating and drinking okay but sleeping longer than normal and high temps.
Still doesn't appear poorly. Isn't upset just raging hot.
He had Calpol at 6pm. Ibu at 8pm. Just been to check on him at 10.30pm before i went to bed and temp is highest yet at 40.2.
He had gone to bed happy and in a babygrow with no vest or sleeping bag.

Is a temp alone worth doing anything about
If they're not seeming poorly / rashy/ upset?

I've given him more Calpol at 10.30 but he's maxed out on his doses now for both meds in a 24hr period so I'm at a loss

My plan is currently stay awake till 11.30 Then go and check temp again to see if it's coming down. Does this sound the right thing to do?

I am also shocked that you didn't call 111 in the night when advised to do so here. A temperature which is that high for that long definitely needs looking at.

Please get him to a doctor! Don't wait any longer.

O4FS · 27/02/2019 07:28

Doctors/walk in/111 ASAP.

DC4 has a temp when she was 18 months old, wouldn’t come down. On day 2, took her to the walk in. She came very close to having a lumber puncture, but doctor held off and did more tests. Turned out to be a UTI that had gone into her kidneys and she spent the next 5 days on a drip in hospital, with several unpleasant hospital trips to follow to do tests on her kidneys.

So don’t risk it. It could be nothing but it might be something.

Hope he’s ok. Try not to worry but do get help.

Jinglesplodge · 27/02/2019 07:31

Madness. Doctor as soon as possible: I can't believe how many times you've ignored advice to get him checked out. Fingers crossed everything is fine but advice is not to ignore a temp that high - the thing with very small children is that they can appear well when they're not.

MRex · 27/02/2019 07:38

I would have called 111 last night, it's too risky to leave a temperature that's not controlled by medication. In my local area there's scarlet fever and measles at the moment, get seen.

CluedoAddict · 27/02/2019 07:39

It's ridiculous you didn't call last night. Your child needs medical attention.

nikita190 · 27/02/2019 07:40

Did you call 111 or going to see GP? I would have calls them straight away we are just parents not professionals. A temp that high needs seeing too ASAP
Hope he's better now !

Prequelle · 27/02/2019 07:47

Jesus Christ. It amazes me how people will post on a forum full of randoms asking for advice but won't ring NHS 111

nikita190 · 27/02/2019 07:47

I actually deleted a lot of what I was going to say as I didn't want to sound harsh but I can now see others are thinking and saying the same! This is irresponsible to keep asking stupid questions when people have advised you to get him to doctor! He may have an infection and needed antibiotics and leaving him longer to 'wait it out' is just plain horrible he's obviously in pain and not right! Should have called 111 last night not now !
I repeat we are just parents not professionals! I'm not saying your a bad mother but please have more urgency please that temp is not okay to be left so long!

Quartz2208 · 27/02/2019 07:48

Yes he needs to be seen a temperature that high has a cause (viral or bacterial) that needs checking out
It should be dropping below 38 with medication

Prequelle · 27/02/2019 07:50

He's actually triggering as red flag sepsis using my hospitals paediatric sepsis algorithm. Because his temp has been over 39 for 4 hours.

Dimsumlosesum · 27/02/2019 07:51

Is this a joke??!! Call 111 ffs! Why are you ignoring everyone?!

Whoevenknowswhattodo · 27/02/2019 07:58

I called 111 at 7am, they told me to ring into the docs at 8.30 as their system is advising to be seen within 6 hours.
Thanks again
Sorry that so many of you are thinking I'm irresponsible.
The nhs website was saying call 111 if temp is over 39 and he's under 6 months which he isn't.
But I understand that because its not responding to the meds that's making it more serious.

I am an a&e doctor and would expect to see things like this if the GP cannot be seen urgently.

Fever of unknown origin (ie no obvious chest infection/ ear infection etc) is actually more concerning than a fever with an obvious cause- it makes us worried about more concerning causes of a fever. Especially such a high fever which has not responded to ibuprofen and calpol- this doesn't seem like just teething to me!

Please get him checked out this morning- if not by the GP then a&e.

NameChange30 · 27/02/2019 07:59

Unfortunately the initial responses were dominated by several posts by Isadora2007 giving the wrong advice, despite the vast majority of others telling OP to call 111.

I still don't know why the OP listened to that poster and not everyone else, though Confused

MiGi777 · 27/02/2019 08:00

Can mumsnet intervene and tell her to call a doctor? What do you do in this situation where someone's child is suffering and the parent is oblivious and just sat here chatting ignoring everyone's urgent advice?

andadietcoke · 27/02/2019 08:04

She's called 111. She followed the advice on the NHS website re temperatures and age brackets.

Can we stop the attacks now please?

weebarra · 27/02/2019 08:05

But she has called 111.

Prequelle · 27/02/2019 08:10

You realise the system is advising you being seen 6 hours from your initial call when really the clock should have started when you initially realised your child was unwell?

ThanosSavedMe · 27/02/2019 08:12

Five posts ago she said she call 111. Before then she kept asking what to do. Several people said call 111, goes to the emergency doctor or hospital. All this was ignored in favour of giving us a temp update and then asking what to do again.

Not an attack but people concerned that someone with a child with a high temp with no obvious cause was ignoring advice.

EstrellaDamn · 27/02/2019 08:17

This thread Confused

  • Should I call 111?
  • No, don't be daft, it's only a temp.
  • Right, he's still hot.
  • How dare you not have phoned 111, you neglectful bitch!

Hope he's ok OP.

MiGi777 · 27/02/2019 08:18

I wasn't attacking her at all and I apologised if I seemed harsh. She just seems a bit "hesitant" to react and needs to be pushed to get help so we are pushing her to get her baby checked. I'm sorry if you disagree with us.

avocuddl · 27/02/2019 08:22

Hope he's okay OP. I think you did the right thing

Whoevenknowswhattodo · 27/02/2019 08:24

Thanks very much
I'll let you know what the doc says

EugenesAxe · 27/02/2019 08:25

And in any case if you call 111 and there’s a concern it’s usually a community responder that comes out to you before any transfer to A&E, so you wouldn’t have been uprooting your sleeping child, necessarily.

Hope all is well. I’m like you and don’t rush off to hospital at the drop of a hat like some people on these boards, but all the same I know how quickly little children can go from OK to really sick, and it’s always wise to call 111 for reassurance when there’s a really high temp.

Eatmycheese · 27/02/2019 08:29

The poster that initially old you to sit on it seems to have disappeared Hmm
Hope your baby is ok.
As someone who has had their third child in and out of hospital for an unexplained fever I can tell you that not once did it require no further treatment: there was always something.

You have had some very good clinical advise on here too not just the call 111 tidal wave.

Let us know how he is
