To ask how to treat a 10mo with a temp of 40.2

Shamelessly posted here for traffic Blush

Ds2 is 10months. He hasn't been unwell, not even snotty . Yesterday afternoon at lunchtime he wouldn't eat which is unlike him. Cried and crashed out and slept most of the day and night. He had a temp of 38-39.5 all day despite regular Calpol and ibuprofen.
Today he's been the same, eating and drinking okay but sleeping longer than normal and high temps.
Still doesn't appear poorly. Isn't upset just raging hot.
He had Calpol at 6pm. Ibu at 8pm. Just been to check on him at 10.30pm before i went to bed and temp is highest yet at 40.2.
He had gone to bed happy and in a babygrow with no vest or sleeping bag.

Is a temp alone worth doing anything about
If they're not seeming poorly / rashy/ upset?

I've given him more Calpol at 10.30 but he's maxed out on his doses now for both meds in a 24hr period so I'm at a loss

My plan is currently stay awake till 11.30 Then go and check temp again to see if it's coming down. Does this sound the right thing to do?

Don’t just assume it is teething. Mine could run a bit of a low fever when teething but it would never go as high as 40 and it was always responsive to calpol.

The nhs website says this

Some people think that teething causes other symptoms, such as diarrhoea and fever, but there's no evidence to support this.
You know your baby best. Get medical advice if they have any symptoms that are causing you concern. You can call NHS 111 or contact your GP.

thaegumathteth · 27/02/2019 05:23

Hope he’s ok. I’d definitely be getting him seen in the morning at the very least.

Ringsender2 · 27/02/2019 05:27

My DS used to get v high temps with ear infections. Mostly the infections had clear symptoms (pulling at ear, crying etc). A couple of times, though, we didn't know about the infections until the eardrum burst.

Crunchymum · 27/02/2019 06:27

How is he this morning? Is be inclined to get him checked as it sounds like he is maxing out on Calpol and Nurofen but it's not properly controlling his temperature. You need to check there isn't an underlying cause.

Whoevenknowswhattodo · 27/02/2019 06:42

39.5 Sad despite the fact our house is freezing this morning. His head feels roasting. 111 or docs at 8.30?
Thanks again

I would be concerned about a UTI with a temp that high with no other symptoms, or possibly tonsillitis. I would certainly see the GP with him this morning.
I think the advice now is to use just one antipyretic, not to alternate paracetamol and ibuprofen due to increased risk of hepatic/renal issues.
Hope he’s on the mend and you can get seen today, even just to rule out a more worrying cause like UTI.

SaturdaySauv · 27/02/2019 06:45

Cross posted. I think if you can get an emergency appointment soon after the GP opens, that’s your quickest route to being seen but certainly won’t hurt to call 111 in the meantime.

Mummyme87 · 27/02/2019 06:47

Hopes he’s better this morning. My 12m old was throwing out temps of 39.5 - 41C a couple of weeks back and I ended up calling 111 at 6am. Had an OOH GP appt at 9am and he had tonsillitis. He had nothing notable otherwise, his resps went up to 60-70 when he spiked a temp but otherwise nothing

Just as a side note for a PP. At this age, resps of 30-60 are normal

SaturdaySauv · 27/02/2019 06:47

Get him to have a good drink of water (syringe water into his mouth if he doesn’t want to drink), have a look at his skin on torso and limbs to check for rash and if you have a sample pot at home try to catch a wee sample in advance of seeing the Dr.
Were his nappies wet overnight?

Monty27 · 27/02/2019 06:50

I hope you have done the right thing and is having medical care.

InsomniaTho · 27/02/2019 06:50

Get him to a Doctor now.

When DD was 7, with a temp of 40.1 and no other symptoms, our GP sent us straight to the Paediatric Ward at the local hospital. She had a severe UTI and was very ill for about a month.

Get the baby seen. Today.

Divgirl2 · 27/02/2019 06:59

Call 111, let them make the call of whether you wait until the docs open or take the LO to the hospital.

NameChange30 · 27/02/2019 06:59

Some of the advice on this thread is baffling and irresponsible.

OP, a sustained high temperature that is not responding to medication requires immediate medical advice. Especially for a 10 month old! You should have called 111 and not just asked Mumsnet. Your son needs a thorough examination from a trained medical professional.

My son's had lots of illness and fevers hitting 40 and above, that kind of fever is NEVER just teething, for us it's usually a viral infection but he's also needed antibiotics sometimes. In our case the temperature always came down with medication (by 1 degree or more) so if we weren't worried about other symptoms we would wait and see. However, with a fever that high you shouldn't wait too long. And not if it's not responding to medication!!

Teacakequeen · 27/02/2019 07:09

I'd call you 111 now

MiGi777 · 27/02/2019 07:12

Oh my god. I am genuinely shocked you haven't taken this child to the out of hours over night. I don't know what your reasons are but that child needs to see a doctor immediately. It's none of my business and I know people might think I'm being horrible and dramatic but seriously??? You need to stop chatting on here and call a doctor. I am sorry if that sounded harsh.

oatmilk4breakfast · 27/02/2019 07:14

Agree. Doctors now. My doctors surgery would always just fit me in by getting a doctor to ring me and then he or she would either unblock a space or just wait til after surgery to see a baby that little. the nhs online advice will tell you that a baby that small with a temp that high for long needs to be seen by a doctor. Hope all ok. Xx

Kittykat93 · 27/02/2019 07:15

Sorry op but you keep asking on here and many people have advised you seek some medical advice which you still haven't.

Again, I recommend you call 111 for advice. No one on here knows what's wrong with your dc.

Hope everything is ok Thanks

Monty27 · 27/02/2019 07:15

It's unbelievably wrong to sit on Mumsnet
I have no wordsShock

fruitandve · 27/02/2019 07:16

Hi Op, it could be something like tonsillitis. Our DS was very similar temperature wise. Hope you get to the docs today if you can.

In fact you've left it so long I'd be tempted to bypass the surgery altogether since it doesn't open for another hour and 15 minutes and go straight to A and E.

TheClaifeCrier · 27/02/2019 07:22

I think this is symptomatic of the continuing campaign telling people not to waste the time of doctors etc. It's gone so far the other way that now people are putting off going to see a doctor when they really need to.

OP take your child to the GP this morning. It's possibly a urine infection and a temperature that doesn't respond to medication always needs to be checked.

babydreamer1 · 27/02/2019 07:23

Why aren't you listening to the majority of advice given OP? Phone 111 or take your baby to A&E. What is wrong with you??
Sitting dithering on Mumsnet updating us of his temp won't do anything to help, we aren't doctors. Ffs.

Lumene · 27/02/2019 07:23

NHS website says if temp not coming down with calpol etc get urgent gp appt

ThanosSavedMe · 27/02/2019 07:26

Why are you asking again when you’ve ignored so many pp saying to call 111?

CALL 111
