To ask how to treat a 10mo with a temp of 40.2

Shamelessly posted here for traffic Blush

Ds2 is 10months. He hasn't been unwell, not even snotty . Yesterday afternoon at lunchtime he wouldn't eat which is unlike him. Cried and crashed out and slept most of the day and night. He had a temp of 38-39.5 all day despite regular Calpol and ibuprofen.
Today he's been the same, eating and drinking okay but sleeping longer than normal and high temps.
Still doesn't appear poorly. Isn't upset just raging hot.
He had Calpol at 6pm. Ibu at 8pm. Just been to check on him at 10.30pm before i went to bed and temp is highest yet at 40.2.
He had gone to bed happy and in a babygrow with no vest or sleeping bag.

Is a temp alone worth doing anything about
If they're not seeming poorly / rashy/ upset?

I've given him more Calpol at 10.30 but he's maxed out on his doses now for both meds in a 24hr period so I'm at a loss

My plan is currently stay awake till 11.30 Then go and check temp again to see if it's coming down. Does this sound the right thing to do?

God knows why people have to dig the knife into a worried and stressed mum who is just trying to do the best for her son. He was asleep and had seemed happy, then his temp decreased a little. I completely understand your choices OP and please do not take the criticism to heart. You were making your best judgment call for your ds and you should not be criticised for that.

Really hope he is ok at the drs.

Whoevenknowswhattodo · 27/02/2019 10:33

The doc was very thorough and checked everything. Said he couldn't see obvious sign of infection but his throat was a little pink.
Said as he is smiling and alert he isn't overly worried.
Gave difflam as a precaution.
I'm not sure if I'm happy with that as I can't see how that will combat the temperature?

Did they test his urine ?

Whoevenknowswhattodo · 27/02/2019 10:50

No he said its too hard and go get urine sample for a baby will probably need to be done at hospital so see how he goes Sad

What’s his temp now? What did GP say to do ongoing?

Whoevenknowswhattodo · 27/02/2019 10:55

Temp currently 38.8
He said 'monitor him you seem sensible. If you're worried bring him back later'

OP posts:
Whoevenknowswhattodo · 27/02/2019 10:58

He didn't check his heart rate

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 27/02/2019 10:58

I’m glad he’s been checked over, keep checking his temp and any changes in behaviour and as suggested take him back straight away if you’re worried. Hope his temp starts to drop soon, poor you, you must be shattered.

NameChange30 · 27/02/2019 11:00

That's not good enough, there must be a reason for the fever. They should be testing urine. Do you have a sample pot, at least? We never managed to get any that way but you could try. Bit of nappy free time in the empty bath, maybe.

The GP could have given you something to put in the nappy to collect urine (it's not as good as the sample pot as it's obviously not sterile, but it's better than nothing).

NameChange30 · 27/02/2019 11:00

GP didn't check heart rate?! What about oxygen levels? Pulse? Listen to chest, examine ears and throat?

NameChange30 · 27/02/2019 11:02

I remember taking DS to the GP once and when we walked in the doctor said "oh he looks fine" (helpful) Hmm but after checking his vitals it turned out he wasn't fine. Babies can be pretty perky despite illness.

Whoevenknowswhattodo · 27/02/2019 11:04

Have nothing at all for urine testing. Just said it's too hard and he doesn't think it's worth sending him to hospital as he's smily and alert.
Didn't check pulse, oxygen or heart rate.
Listened to chest and said it's clear.
Looked in ears which were fine. Said throat looked a little pink but no pus. Prescribed difflam and said 2 squirts every 2-3 hrs and monitor.
I'm now on the sofa and he's flat out on me

Don't feel bad OP. I'd have treated it in the same way you have. A medical professional has seen him now and agrees with your action. If it goes up high again or symptoms change then call 111. Skin to skin will help his temperature under a blanket.

Crunchymum · 27/02/2019 11:09

My GP don't check oxygen levels if child isn't presenting with anything breathing related?

MrsRyanGosling15 · 27/02/2019 11:10

I just don't understand anyone that comes on to a chat room for medical advice for their sick dc. Surely everyone knows where to get this type of advice from? If you need the answer to a medical question why not ask a nurse/doctor/pharmacist/111 etc. Why on earth ask random people on the internet when you have no idea who they are are what type of idiots they may be!

QueenofmyPrinces · 27/02/2019 11:12

I wouldn’t be happy with that GP assessment at all and would still go to A&E to be honest.

Something is clearly going on and as for the GP not even bothering to attempt getting a urine sample is horrendous. UTI’s can cause very high temperatures and can cause damage to the kidneys if left untreated.

Go to A&E OP - I would.

cheeseypuff · 27/02/2019 11:19

I wouldn’t be happy with that GP assessment at all and would still go to A&E to be honest.

No totally - I'd absolutely ignore the advice of the medical professional you've seen now OP & add to the queue of patients waiting to be seen at A & E cos they're bound to give you totally different advice to your GP. Hmm
Although I might have called 111 last night on the whole I think what you've done in monitoring him overnight is sensible & as the doctor says you can get in touch again if you're still worried.

cheeseypuff · 27/02/2019 11:19

Meant to add - hope he's on the mend soon.

NameChange30 · 27/02/2019 11:21

I agree with Queen. A baby doesn't have a temp of 39+ for 3 days in a row without a reason. If no other symptoms then it could be a UTI so a urine test seems pretty vital to rule it out!

Fair enough about the oxygen. Whenever my DS has been unwell with a persistent fever, he's had cold symptoms, a cough and/or wheeze, and he was diagnosed with bronchiolitis and "viral wheeze" a few times, so oxygen levels were relevant in his case.

QueenofmyPrinces · 27/02/2019 11:21

A doctor who in one breath says, “I can’t find a source of infection” and with his next breath says, “But I won’t bother checking his urine because to too hard” is not one I would be trusting TBH.

NameChange30 · 27/02/2019 11:22

You can get a urine sample pot easily, just ask the GP receptionist. We always keep one spare at home.

Gth1234 · 27/02/2019 11:27

Better safe than sorry. Doctors won't mind if you ring emergency numbers.

newlyfrugal · 27/02/2019 11:44

Madness. Get a urine sample and get back to a different doctor. A urine infection can be serious even in a much older child. I wouldn't trust that doctor a bit!

Eatmycheese · 27/02/2019 11:55

Your GP sounds shit.
Get yourself and your baby off to a&e where at the very least the vital obs and check for uti can be done

No wonder a & e is flooded if there are GPS like this all over the place
