To ask how to treat a 10mo with a temp of 40.2

Whoevenknowswhattodo · 26/02/2019 23:04

Shamelessly posted here for traffic Blush

Ds2 is 10months. He hasn't been unwell, not even snotty . Yesterday afternoon at lunchtime he wouldn't eat which is unlike him. Cried and crashed out and slept most of the day and night. He had a temp of 38-39.5 all day despite regular Calpol and ibuprofen.
Today he's been the same, eating and drinking okay but sleeping longer than normal and high temps.
Still doesn't appear poorly. Isn't upset just raging hot.
He had Calpol at 6pm. Ibu at 8pm. Just been to check on him at 10.30pm before i went to bed and temp is highest yet at 40.2.
He had gone to bed happy and in a babygrow with no vest or sleeping bag.

Is a temp alone worth doing anything about
If they're not seeming poorly / rashy/ upset?

I've given him more Calpol at 10.30 but he's maxed out on his doses now for both meds in a 24hr period so I'm at a loss

My plan is currently stay awake till 11.30 Then go and check temp again to see if it's coming down. Does this sound the right thing to do?

What does your gut say

Whoevenknowswhattodo · 26/02/2019 23:39

My gut is saying he doesn't appear poorly and do I really want to be dragging him out in the early hours for 'just' a temp, but then I'm stressing that if he is poorly I'll feel terrible Sad

In my experience our home thermometer gave a temperature that was sometimes lower than their temperatures actually were.

janetforpresident · 26/02/2019 23:40

I definitely wouldnt be leaving him all night but if you really don't want to call them set an alarm for a couple of hours and check again.

janetforpresident · 26/02/2019 23:43

Won't 111 just tell you to monitor him If they feel he is not too poorly?

GiveMeAllTheGin8 · 26/02/2019 23:43

I would get him checked, that’s s very high temp, when is he due the next calpol / nurofen dose?

misstiggiwinkle · 26/02/2019 23:44

Can you possibly go and wake him? I'd want to know that he was rousable and not floppy or with any other symptoms before going to bed. (Personally is bed phoning 111). Make sure you check places like behind ears and soles of feet too for bruise like rashes

misstiggiwinkle · 26/02/2019 23:45

*is bed -I'd be

Redlipstickismyarmour · 26/02/2019 23:45

Repeating what others say, 111. Do you really want to take a chance? Let the professionals give you some advice. Children can go downhill quickly so it’s best to seek advice from those well educated in these things.

Isadora2007 · 26/02/2019 23:46

I would let him sleep- and be near him.

Littlechocola · 26/02/2019 23:46

Is he drinking? Having wet nappies?

Littlechocola · 26/02/2019 23:47

What kind of thermometer?

GinZing · 26/02/2019 23:49

111 it takes a few mins and will put your mind at rest

PickAChew · 26/02/2019 23:49

Instinct would say keep watching but ba ies often sleep, rather than appearing poorly.

ChakiraChakra · 26/02/2019 23:53

Why would you even risk it? It's still a very high temperature for anybody, let alone a baby. Call 111, if they advise you to go to A&E or somewhere you would be dragging him out for VERY good reason. Xx

Puddleducks123 · 26/02/2019 23:55

Please get him reviewed. That's a very high temp with no obvious source of infection. He needs to be checked.

LoniceraJaponica · 26/02/2019 23:57

When DD was that age her temperature only got that high when she had a urine infection. I would seek medical attention as untreated UTIs are dangerous.

Whoevenknowswhattodo · 26/02/2019 23:57

Just been and woken him. He has no rash and was smiling at me...
Temp another half hour on was 39.5 so lower still
Using the braun thermoscan

He had another drink.

Alarm set for 1am, will judge it then again

Thanks all

My Dd used to get to 40 fairly regularly. I soon got used to it just being her way of dealing with viruses.

FrozenMargarita17 · 27/02/2019 00:00

Hi OP I would call 111. My dd is one for a temperature but when it gets that high and isn't coming down I would ask for help. This last weekend she had a temperature but seemed chatty etc and had a bit of cough but no worse than she's had before but she very quickly went downhill and I ended up in hospital and she's got a chest infection and tonsillitis - she felt like a volcano when I touched her.

TheSheepofWallSt · 27/02/2019 00:01

OP- my DS spikes terrifyingly high fevers (41.6 most notably) and can appear 100% fine with them- he’s had a lot. He’s been quite a poorly baby, sadly. In every case but one he’s had an underlying infection- and temp not reducing with both max doses of Calpol and ibuprofen is quite worrying. Most doctors would want to see that baby, and 111 would send a paramedic for a baby under 1 with those symptoms.

What is his respiratory rate? Anything over 40 breaths per min and you need to get him seen, ASAP

What’s his colour like? Purplish? Mottled? Greyish? All red flags.

How many wet nappies has he made-
Less than usual? Needs to see a doctor.

I mean the list goes on really. I’d be seeking attention with that temp alone though.

arethereanyleftatall · 27/02/2019 00:06

I must be behind the times with the advice. When my dds were little, the advice was if it's just a temperature, no other symptoms at all, just let them sleep. No meds needed and don't disturb them. Ten years ago now, so I suppose they improve and get safer all the time.

Whoevenknowswhattodo · 27/02/2019 01:37

38.5 now... So in the amber.
Will see how he is in the morning
Thanks again

Keep the room cool and no extra layers around him. Plenty of fluids though even things like ice lollies if he’s happy to have them.

If he’s still the same in the morning I would get him checked.

Shootfirstaskquestionslater · 27/02/2019 02:38

I would get him checked in the morning if it’s still high it may of already been mentioned but could he possibly be teething babies can have high temperatures when they are cutting teeth. I hope your DS is ok.
