To ask how to treat a 10mo with a temp of 40.2

Whoevenknowswhattodo · 26/02/2019 23:04

Shamelessly posted here for traffic Blush

Ds2 is 10months. He hasn't been unwell, not even snotty . Yesterday afternoon at lunchtime he wouldn't eat which is unlike him. Cried and crashed out and slept most of the day and night. He had a temp of 38-39.5 all day despite regular Calpol and ibuprofen.
Today he's been the same, eating and drinking okay but sleeping longer than normal and high temps.
Still doesn't appear poorly. Isn't upset just raging hot.
He had Calpol at 6pm. Ibu at 8pm. Just been to check on him at 10.30pm before i went to bed and temp is highest yet at 40.2.
He had gone to bed happy and in a babygrow with no vest or sleeping bag.

Is a temp alone worth doing anything about
If they're not seeming poorly / rashy/ upset?

I've given him more Calpol at 10.30 but he's maxed out on his doses now for both meds in a 24hr period so I'm at a loss

My plan is currently stay awake till 11.30 Then go and check temp again to see if it's coming down. Does this sound the right thing to do?

Ahh the poor love. Good news is that once they give the antibiotics the turnaround is quite quick.
Glad you listened to your gut and that they’ve finally uncovered what’s wrong.

mummyof2boys30 · 28/02/2019 15:14

My son age 7 had tonsillitus last March. He has never been as sick as he was then. Was awful. Hopefully quick recovery

NameChange30 · 28/02/2019 15:15

Ah so it wasn't a UTI or a virus!
Well I'm glad they have finally found the cause, and he is finally getting the treatment he needs.
Well done for persevering.

IHateUncleJamie · 28/02/2019 15:25

Poor little love. An out of hours GP once dismissed that in my (then toddler) dd saying the white spots on her tonsils were “probably toothpaste”. I said no, she’d had the same white spots last time she had tonsilitis. Old goat refused to give antibiotics.

Next morning our usual GP was irate that dd hadn’t been given antibiotics for a “very nasty case” of tonsilitis. 🙄🙄🙄

Anyway. Well done, OP for perservering. Flowers

southnownorth · 28/02/2019 15:28

Hope he gets better soon OP.

Whoevenknowswhattodo · 28/02/2019 15:31

Thanks very much to everyone who responded to me
The doc who just saw him said, yesterday it probably was viral tonsililtis if his throat was pink when he saw gp but has now turned to bacterial so the meds should definately help him
I'd been sat syringing water Into him trying to get a urine sample for ages! But they decided that he doesn't need a uti test now as they said his tonsils look very bad
Poor thing, he is not looking happy!

EstrellaDamn · 28/02/2019 15:33

He'll be much happier after a day of antibiotics. Glad you got to the bottom of it!

ohfourfoxache · 28/02/2019 15:37

I’m so pleased they’ve given him antibiotics, poor little mite Sad

ineedaholidaynow · 28/02/2019 15:57

Hope he is feeling better soon Flowers

Interesting there is a quite similar thread running at the moment about 4yo with very similar temperature and outcome

Random18 · 28/02/2019 17:37

The antibiotics should work very quickly if it’s bacterial. And I hope he makes a quick recovery.
My DD has had bacterial tonsillitis a few times and her temp has been very high.
She normally responds very quickly to ab’s.

Whoevenknowswhattodo · 28/02/2019 17:49

Thanks all Smile

I’m glad you got him seen and sorted. As per my above, have lots of experience of drs misdiagnosing bacterial tonsillitis- and as you’ve now seen, it can make them very unwell.

I hope your antibiotics kick in quickly and your DS feels better soon.

Inless lactose intolerant, id Recommend you give lots of natural yogurt whilst your DS is taking the ABs- soothes the throat, lots of cals if he isn’t eating much and helps settle the stomach if he suffers the side effects of ABs.

Kneehigim · 28/02/2019 18:35

Bless him. Hopefully he'll perk up in no time!

NameChange30 · 28/02/2019 18:39

YY to natural yogurt. You could also give progaia probiotics (for babies) to counteract the negative effects of antibiotics. Available on amazon.

kitkatsky · 28/02/2019 18:46

I'd call 111, but try ibuprofen too- is more effective then paracetamol aka calpol for temps

MRex · 28/02/2019 18:54

So glad they've found out what it is, hope he's feeling better soon.

keepforgettingmyusername · 28/02/2019 19:30

@SaturdaySauv you're acting like OP could just rock up to A&E and demand a urine test. Doctors decide what tests they run, not parents of patients.

Girlinstripedpyjamas · 28/02/2019 19:56

Hope the drugs work very quickly for him

SaturdaySauv · 28/02/2019 20:38

forgetting you can pretty much do just that at many GP surgeries. All I’ve worked with or been a patient at over the last 10 years or so over three different cities anyway.

NameChange30 · 28/02/2019 20:58

Yes at my GP surgery you can hand a urine sample in without seeing a GP or even a nurse first. You just fill in a little form with your details and tick the box for suspected UTI. They will dip test it the same day and call you if they've found an infection.

txtbreaker · 28/02/2019 21:21

Not sure I would agree with ice lollies. Room temp liquids. Also have you tried bathing him with tepid water. Use a wash cloth with tepid water only. And strokevitvon skin. As it dries it helps to bring down temp. My daughter used to get same type of temp with throat infections. There is only so much Calpol etc will do.

It’s scary and it was good advice earlier to try and get rest while your baby is sleeping. It’s so exhausting looking after them when they are ill and you are so worried.

HavelockVetinari · 28/02/2019 21:35

Ah, poor little mite, I'm so glad you persevered and got him seen again. Fingers crossed the antibiotics sort him out. It's awful when your baby's not well. Flowers
