I would never actually do this of course but since being able to drive, I've made efforts to be a patient, understandable driver as I remember how nerve-wracking it could be to be a learner etc but there are some things people do on the road that just irritate me so much!!!

The main one I'm talking about is when pulling up to a junction, those who are turning right stay smack bang in the middle of the road and don't allow any room for a car turning left to position themselves at the junction!!

I've noticed this a few times at a junction near to where I live. If you're turning left it's usually quite quiet and plenty of opportunities to go but if you're turning right there can be a lot of cars coming. This means the person sat waiting to go right is there for a while and the poor person wanting to go left could've just gone if only the first car had positioned themselves correctly!!! Sorry if I'm not making any sense LOL. Of course if someone's car is too big to allow for another car to pass by the side of it or there isn't enough room at the junction that's different!

What are your guys driving/parking gripes other than the usual middle lane hoggers?!

People who don't pay attention to lane markings at roundabouts or use the wrong lane. If you going right, use the right hand lane. Unless you are lorry with the turning ability of a tank, then get it the proper lane.

But don't, for the LOVE OF GOD try and cut past an HGV on the inside, given that tank-like turning circle. It's dangerous and stupid and you'll probably end up squished.

People who can't indicate correctly, or who don't do it at all. Slamming on the brakes and indicating 1 second before you want to turn isn't how you do it.

That's winds me up too. Learn to bloody wait. I drive a Picanto, I'd be turned into a pancake.

Since this is now a #righthandlaneatroundabouts thread - nothing winds me up more than people who bypass a whole cue of left turn traffic, go all the way around the roundabout and then cut in.

Entitled Wankers, you're not clever, you are literally psychopaths, unable to comprehend basic social norms.

What, you mean using the second lane which is there precisely to be driven on? Nobody else's fault but your own if you insist on unnecessarily blocking lane one.

Entitled Wankers, you're not clever, you are literally psychopaths, unable to comprehend basic social norms.

Excellent use of "literally" there. And absolutely no hyperbole whatsoever.

Oh, people who drive behind other people with full beam headlights on at night so the person in front is blinded. Also those who have their full beams on and don't turn them off when passing vehicles coming in the opposite direction. Very inconsiderate.

I've got a junction near me coming out of a petrol station where there is a turn left and turn right lane. The problem is that the main road you're turning into curves round to the left so when you're waiting to turn right, if no one is going left, you can clearly see when a car is coming along but if someone is going left, just them waiting at the junction can totally block your view. It's a badly designed junction.

I hate it when there are is a box junction of traffic lights but no yellow box and everyone drives into it without checking that their exit is clear and then completely blocking the area for anyone else.

I was also driving up an a road yesterday and saw how close cars were up behind each other driving at 70. They were literally only leaving a car space between them. Just because you have a ultra modern car with top of the range brakes, it doesn't mean that if you are that close to the person in front, you are going to stop in time if they do. You will go into the back of them

I get very wound up by tailgating. Once I was going about 25mph down a quite narrow residential road, I drive through it a lot and it’s near a secondary school, so at school times there are a lot of teens haphazardly crossing the street or popping out between cars. On this particular day it was the same thing, a lot of kids ambling about and stepping into the street so I didn’t want to go the full speed limit (30) in case one of them surprised me.
Anyway the BMW behind me starts beeping incessantly and driving right up my bum. I look in the mirror and he’s furiously making gestures to go faster and mouthing that I’m a cunt. Being a petty cow I slow down, dropping my speed to 10mph and waving to him in the mirror. The road is too narrow to overtake because of all the parked cars. Childish I know, but there was no need for his rudeness. I wasn’t exactly crawling, and the road wasn’t even that long. The second we got to the end of the junction where the road widened he put his foot down and whizzed past, narrowly missing a pupil.

Luckily I do understand the highway code, and road markings however...so while it may piss you off it is in no way incorrect or illegal.

People who insist on queueing bumper to bumper in traffic, and block the exit from side turnings in the process.

There's always a queue down to a set of traffic lights near my house. There are also 4 roads that join from the left. People are forever blocking the junctions so that the poor sods trying to turn right have to wait for ever before they can get out. One of these turnings is the main route through town for people heading north; a long wait there can gridlock the whole bloody town centre in no time.

There's no excuse for it, two of the junctions have the words "keep clear" painted on the carriageway in massive letters, but still dickheads think this doesn't apply to them. They also stare straight ahead with a fixed gaze, for fear of making eye contact with the cars they're holding up.

Tossers.

People who can't read the road ahead and pull forwards not getting there is no where to go and block the pedestrian crossing.

People not indicating; annoying for other drivers and pedestrians.

People sitting at a roundabout but not moving even if the road is completely clear. I haven't got all day sunshine!

The worst however is those that bypass the queues to get off the motorway. Everyone is in lane waiting to take the junction off and these people whizz ahead and then slow down to almost a stop on the inside lane and indicate right at the junction. Wait in line like everyone else!

I feel better now Blush

People who wait and wait and wait for oncoming traffic to clear (in rush hour) before they go (when cars are parked on the road) even when there's plenty of space, because they don't know how wide their car is. Or oncoming cars that panic and flap their arms when I don't wait because I DO know how wide my car is and that there's plenty of room. Evidenced by the fact I didn't hit their car so CHILL OUT! Happens almost daily round here.

If you know you're going to need to left lane you should be in it as early as possible to avoid forcing other road users to stop to let you through. If you're blocking the right hand lane while trying to force yourself into the left hand lane having bypassed the entire queue because you're too important to wait like everyone else that's very inconsiderate to others.

It's perfectly legal to jump queues at train stations, bus stops, pretty much anywhere. Doesn't mean you're not being really inconsiderate and rude when you do it though.

I have no issue with slingshotting roundabouts as a queue bypass method though. Just like I have no issue with boarding the train via a less-crowded door.

Oh, and the people who pull up on double yellows, bang their hazard warners on and then pop to the shop. Hmm

Nothing wrong with driving down the right lane to go around the roundabout to avoid a big queue in the left hand lane. I don’t understand why more people don’t do that 🤷🏻‍♀️

I get irrationally irritated when people forget to switch off their indicator. It just makes me think the person is completely oblivious.

Road designs that only work for people who already know how to navigate them, for example:

  • two lanes (exept for rush hour) but straight ahead is sometimes on the left, sometimes on the right;
  • motoring along nicely and finding that you should have merged on the left because all of a sudden there is a turn-off for the direction you need, but no way of knowing that was what all the other cars were queuing for;
  • road with lots of hatches and traffic lights, where if traffic flowed as expected you would be able to get off the hatche before the light turns red, but suddenly you find yourself stuck on the hatch;
  • people who don't indicate;
  • people who don't indicate;
  • people on the right who are in a big car, or van and are so far forward that I can't see into the traffic to turn left, while standing beside them - obviously, when the drive forward, that's my cueue, but the traffic coming from the left is typically quite fast (coming from a dual carriageway) so they sometimes stand there longer than you'd like;
  • did I say people who don't indicate?

People who don't give way to pedestrians when turning into a side road.

People who think I should get out of their way when they want to overtake a cyclist. Nope, obstruction is your side, wait until I've gone by and then go.

People who drive and park on pavements.

People who turn right out of a junction and hold everyone up behind them when there is a roundabout to the left.

This reminds me of a roundabout near me. Left is left only and right is straight on and right. It's not wide enough for someone to be going straight on and right at the same time, hence the layout. Obviously this is relatively unusual. The sheer amount of near misses is ridiculous. And 9/10 the person going straight on from the left hand lane gives you a mouthful.

It is marked on the road but it's pretty busy so you often can't see the markings.

Oh yes agree with pp re poor road designs. Large roundabouts that require you to change lanes, plenty don't so those that do are poorly designed.

Oh and this! People who insist on queueing bumper to bumper in traffic, and block the exit from side turnings in the process However, a police car did it to me a few weeks ago when there were lights outside my road. What can you do when even a police officer does it - I thought they were supposed to have advanced driver training? I did stop and make him reverse back to let me through. But it happened again with a different set of lights the other day (not the police this time) and I just gave up, drove a bit further down the road and came back to my road from the other direction because otherwise I'd have caused gridlock. But why do people do this?

Oh yes, this too. Really I should stop driving, no good for my blood pressure. But I get just as annoyed (if not more so) with drivers when I am either cycling or walking/running.

There were roadworks near me recently where the traffic lights were just after a busy right hand turn and you had to go onto the wrong side of the road when your lights were on green (if that makes sense).

It was absolute mayhem. People blocked the turning so then people waiting to turn were stuck and no one could go. Those blocking the turning expected those waiting to drive around and rejoin the queue at the other end (erm no, it's taken me 45 minutes to drive 50 yards). Eventually they had to turn in and then turn out.

Leaving it clear was just too easy obviously.
