I would never actually do this of course but since being able to drive, I've made efforts to be a patient, understandable driver as I remember how nerve-wracking it could be to be a learner etc but there are some things people do on the road that just irritate me so much!!!

The main one I'm talking about is when pulling up to a junction, those who are turning right stay smack bang in the middle of the road and don't allow any room for a car turning left to position themselves at the junction!!

I've noticed this a few times at a junction near to where I live. If you're turning left it's usually quite quiet and plenty of opportunities to go but if you're turning right there can be a lot of cars coming. This means the person sat waiting to go right is there for a while and the poor person wanting to go left could've just gone if only the first car had positioned themselves correctly!!! Sorry if I'm not making any sense LOL. Of course if someone's car is too big to allow for another car to pass by the side of it or there isn't enough room at the junction that's different!

What are your guys driving/parking gripes other than the usual middle lane hoggers?!

Try to turn off your emotions OP. Turn on the radio etc and relax. You cannot control the way others drive only the way you drive and avoid potential accidents caused by others. Getting het up leads to your becoming fatigued and stressed and/or road rage.
Just let it go and feel virtuous that you are driving correctly

theemmadilemma · 25/02/2019 11:11

@DoJo Not always the case if they hang around or hesitate there are often times I could easily have gone if they'd have just kept their fucking nose in.

SisyphusDad · 25/02/2019 11:16

My cul-de-sac leading on to the main road is just as you describe OP, and I'm with you (and, as Seline points out, it is in the highway code).

The way I do it to keep everybody happy (those who position themselves correctly, that is) is to stop half a car's length back from the white line. That way I can see behind the other car what's approaching from the right and can go when it safe for me, and the person waiting to turn right can clearly see what's approaching from the left.

Bowsbows · 25/02/2019 11:20

I have one I have one! Grin

My biggest ever bugbear on the roads is people who don't wait when an obstruction is on their side of the road. They just carry on, driving in the middle of the road, taking up half your lane in the process and consequently either force you to stop, force you to duck in awkwardly or force you into the gutter to make room for them.

Do they literally not teach waiting when the obstruction is on your side of the road any more?

Margot33 · 25/02/2019 11:22

Cars up your arse.

GabsAlot · 25/02/2019 11:23

it is correct to be taught that you take a position either left or right-might be annoying but that is the highway code

perosnally i dont like people doing 40 in a 50 60 or whatever it is they just dont adjust theyre speed-and non indicators it takes less than a second and im not bloody psychic nor are pedestrians

GabsAlot · 25/02/2019 11:24

yes bows but like all other rules they are ignored-they would fail for not waiting

braveasweare · 25/02/2019 11:27

Such funny comments on here! Especially those who insist I shouldn't be driving if I get this annoyed after a year Grin

If you read my original post I said I make an effort to be patient and understandable and I definitely am! Of course I'm being sarcastic why on earth would I ACTUALLY damage somebody else's AND MY OWN car?! It's lighthearted you guys come on!!!! Should I really have to explain that?!

Waxlyrically · 25/02/2019 11:29

People who can’t do merge in turn - when two lanes narrow to one. The second lane is there to be used up until it finishes and if every car let one other in there would be no need for anyone to stop. People virtually attach themselves themselves to the car in front to stop what they see as “pushing in”!

Santaclarita · 25/02/2019 11:30

People on roundabouts who while sitting in a lane decide they want to be in another one, don't check their mirrors and just pull out. Had one do that to me recently, thankfully managed to stop in time. Twat.

People who don't indicate.

People who slow down not using their brakes.

I saw a brilliant knob head the other day. Coming up to a roundabout, knob head was in the left lane. A faster car was coming up to the roundabout in the right lane, both cars intending on going straight on and you can do that in both lanes. Knob head decided at the last second to suddenly switch lanes and indicate right. Faster car was now behind him, and knob head ended up going straight on despite indicating right. I actually drove past still laughing, I couldn't believe someone would be that much of an asshole. He did it so deliberately just hold up the faster car. It was pathetic.

Santaclarita · 25/02/2019 11:32

Oh! People who drive in the middle of the road to avoid speed humps. Even if other drivers are coming towards them. I assume they have a death wish or just don't mind having accidents. Hmm

LondonJax · 25/02/2019 11:33

People who don't indicate! I don't drive very often but DH does every day and it is not only annoying but bloody dangerous. Last week we were on the motorway and someone came from the middle lane into the spot in front of us. They were one car's length in front of us in the middle lane and nipped in. Luckily DH and I both spotted him about to manoeuvre (you know when you get that sense that they're about to change lanes) but no signal just a quick lane change. Not even an exit coming up, nothing behind him coming at a higher speed - absolutely nothing that could have meant a 'oh I'd better change lanes quick and sod the indicators' reaction. When he did turn off he didn't signal either! Pillock.

And as a pedestrian it annoys me even more. When you're standing in the pouring rain waiting to cross a fast road and a bloody driver, all snug in their tin can, turns at the road just before they reach you. With a signal to say they're turning, you'd have been across the road and on your merry way but instead you stand there like a lemon getting soaked whilst the driver swans off round the corner. Just because there is no-one behind you doesn't mean you don't use your signals. There are other road users which you may not be aware of.

I'm off to have a lie down - I'm all overcome!

higgyhog · 25/02/2019 11:51

On my way to work there is a hill, half way up the hill drivers coming down it have to wait behind a marked line and give way to traffic going up the hill, as the road is too narrow for 2 cars. It seems to me that I'm very frequently chugging up the hill in bottom gear and have just reached the narrow part when some idiot in a large 4x4 simply ignores the give way and just drives through, making me stop or forcing me towards the verge. I'm afraid this leaves me seething.

wigglybeezer · 25/02/2019 12:07

Dangerous overtaking of cyclists! I live in an attractive rural are with very wiggly roads. On sunny weekend days lots of cyclists head out and twice yesterday I had to hit the brakes as oncoming cars over took cyclists by crossing the solid line in the middle of the road on a bend. It can be a bit annoying waiting for a straight bit to get past but hey the scenery is nice, and you won't get where you're going at all if you're dead in the ditch!

isittheholidaysyet · 25/02/2019 12:10

People who drive at 35 or 40 mph on the national speed limit 60mph road, then continue at 40 or 45 when we get to the 30 zone.

Road near us, multiple parked cars both sides with only room for one lane of traffic down the middle. So there is lots of pulling into a space waiting for the cars going the other way to pass then moving a bit further down the road. It needs give and take on both sides and thinking a few moves ahead.
I hate it when people pull to one side and indicate for me to go past them, (waving, flashing etc). But they are completely unaware of the car, van and bus behind them which would have nowhere to go if I pull out. (Also I would then be stuck too)

They then get mad at me for not pulling out when they are being kind and letting me through! Look in your rear view mirror ffs.

braveasweare · 25/02/2019 12:10

wigglybeezer Very well put actually!

MulticolourMophead · 25/02/2019 12:15

That highway code extract has two words no one is paying attention to: if possible

A lot if residential streets have junctions where it's not easy to turn right if your view is blocked.

And there's a lot of left turners who are sat there waiting for a written invitation before turning out, meanwhile you're sat waiting for a gap but can't see to the left. And by the time the left turner turns out, you've missed several good opportunities to go because you couldn't see.

CallMeSirShotsFired · 25/02/2019 12:22

People who just drift across lanes on a roundabout as if they are on an ice rink.

Are you aware of where you are going? Are you having a heart attack and unconscious at the wheel? NOBODY KNOWS!

Barrenfieldoffucks · 25/02/2019 12:25

We have one dual carriageway where we live, and one alone. It runs from one roundabout to another, the latter has lights just before it. At said lights, you can pull off to the left as a new lane opens up, or continue in the two existing lanes onto the big main roundabout.

Now here's the problem. 95% of people think that those two lanes are demarcated back by roundabout one. So if you want to pull off to left you should be in left hand lane etc. When actually it is a big standard dual carriageway that just so happens to have a left turn later on. So they all sit in it, blocking the left hand lane all the way back to the previous roundabout and beyond. If anyone goes up the right hand lane, as is perfectly their right and then indicates over they get beeped at, ignored, flashed at, gesticulated at etc.

Even more so if you switch lanes on the big roundabout. Again, it is a massive roundabout with traffic lights at each entrance. It is perfectly possible to leave be over a lane without inconveniencing anyone else, yet according to many round here is is akin to drink driving...just 'not done'.

UatuTheWatcher · 25/02/2019 12:38

As a non driver I hate it when people park up on the pavement not leaving me any room to get past in my wheelchair. Especially where we live with only pavement on one side and no dropped kerbs for ages and fast traffic who don’t drive with care round narrow lanes.

DingDongDenny · 25/02/2019 12:41

I live in the country and I really think the standard of driving on country roads has plummeted in the last few years. People drive round blind corners in the middle of the road. like rally drivers.

It's russian roulette, whether a car will be coming the other way

CallMeSirShotsFired · 25/02/2019 12:42

I think I recognise that roundabout, or at least a version of it. It would also be jammed right across the roundabout itself in lane 1 by people desperate to mark their territory. Hmm

I ended up just always going up the RH lane, then basically slingshotting round the roundabout to end up neatly pulling straight off into the RH lane at the exit. I was past caring how "naughty" that was if these idiots couldn't understand a 2 lane road.

FixTheBone · 25/02/2019 12:42

I think YABU

As others have pointed out, it obstructs the view of oncoming traffic for the person turning right.

If it's marked as two lanes, it would be unreasonable to straddle both. If its marked as one lane it's completely reasonable to position yourself wherever you feel places you in the safest and optimal position for entering the main road.

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 25/02/2019 12:48

People who dont pay attention to lane markings at roundabouts or use the wrong lane. If you going right, use the right hand lane. Unless you are lorry with the turning ability of a tank, then get it the proper lane.

There's a roundabout in the local town, left hand lane approaching from the bypass is left turns only as the turning to the left has a dedicated lane coming into the roundabout. Right lane is right or straight ahead. I've been nearly sideswiped many times by a dickless wonder who cant read or thinks the rules dont apply to them.
