To think people mowing their lawn in FEBRUARY are bonkers?!

Just that really!

Went for a walk yesterday, and passed about 200 houses en route to the woodlands 20 minutes walk away. At LEAST 30 people have mowed their lawn, or were mowing it.

It's February! Confused

It may have been sunny and warmish, but it didn't top 14 degrees C where I am, the washing only half dried, the solar lamps have faded 80% by 6am, and it was ONE degree C last night.

The poor lawns were battered by a severe drought, and severe heat last Spring/summer, for 4 months, and now they're being shaved down to nothing in February, and being exposed to almost zero degrees at night! And...... it's FEBRUARY!

Has anyone on here mowed theirs yet? If so. WHY? Confused

If a deep, hard, frost sets in, in one or 2 weeks (which could well happen as it will still be early March!) it will damage it!

Ours really needs doing, but we haven't done it - mainly because our green waste hasn't started yet and my bags for the tip are already full of cuttings. It is more important that I try and cut back the shrubs before nesting begins.

First cut is usually March, so not that early - as long as the mower is on its highest setting.

Not seen any snow this winter.......thankfully.

Looked at my grass earlier. It looked long. Thought I'd have to cut it. Seen this thread. Decided I won't bother now. I agree that as soon as there's a hint of sunshine everyone goes berserk! Where I live it's been mega noisy. Kids going berserk and playing out until half nine (in the dark like nutters). The ice cream van going around about ten times in a hour. The neighbours having a fight with the adjoining wall. Grass cutting. Motorbike riding. I feel like I'm just being miserable, but...it's FEBRUARY!

LoniceraJaponica · 26/02/2019 06:48

Our camelia has started flowering already.

Al2O3 · 26/02/2019 07:01

Most grasses grow continuously when the temperature hits 11 degrees centigrade, though some do at lower temperatures. If it rises above 10 degrees only once or twice a month growth will hardly be noticeable. When it is regularly above it will start to grow a bit more each day and at current temperatures it is not unreasonable to see why it may need cutting.

bellabasset · 26/02/2019 13:45

The petrol mower has come out - yesterday as my neighbour thought the grass was long where we can't get the electric one. I've had camelias out for three weeks, and I "m watering plants.

Shit - another addition to the week-end list of jobs to be done before it's Monday again. I will wait until it's long enough for a tribe of pygmies to live in it before I even think about it. Once you start it's the thin end of the wedge.

peachesandclean · 26/02/2019 14:04

there's been an article written about this put on The Mirror this morning Confused

Deadpoet · 26/02/2019 14:07

Well as it’s been around 20degrees here for a few days I cut mine. It needed doing

BillywigSting · 26/02/2019 14:08

I'm in the North West with a very boggy garden that basically never dries out (it literally had pond reeds growing in it when we moved in) and our grass definitely needs a cut now.

The winter was so mild, even the frozen north is positively verdant now.

Spring is early this year I think.

RestingBitchFaced · 26/02/2019 17:00

I got the kids to help me wash the car yesterday, and my lawn does need cutting as the grass has grown so will be doing that this week too. Yes YABU!

HoppityFrog3 · 26/02/2019 21:32

Would definitely not mow my lawn right now, and think it is a bad idea, because it's still winter, and it's dropping very cold at night. Even if we don't get a hard frost in a few weeks (risking damage to the lawn,) as soon as you start mowing the lawn, it will set off the growing good and proper, and you will have to keep mowing it once a week. I don't want to be mowing my lawn once a week from bloody mid February!

Won't be starting til late April here, and agree that it's ridiculous that loads of people have started mowing their lawns. As has been said, it is February, and totally unnecessary to mow the lawn. Also a bad idea.

Yeah this. ^ So many people acting like it's mid summer. We could easily have a massive snow storm in a few weeks. Chopping the grass down to its bare roots now, is risking damage if severe frost sets in. Can't believe so many people are doing it. Shock

StoneofDestiny · 26/02/2019 22:14

Nobody would cut down to the bare roots - mowers are set high.

Onesmallstepforaman · 26/02/2019 22:15

Golf courses and sports grounds cut pretty much all year round, I certainly did when I managed those facilities. NOT during frost or waterlogged conditions. Regular topping is better for turf health than occasional scalping. Neither snow or frost kill grass. I've seen turf of cutting height ranging from 5mm-100mm+ survive -17C with very little ill effect.

Bluntness100 · 26/02/2019 22:28

Don't think anyone is cutting their grass to bare roots, taking rhe top off is not cutting it to bare roots, 🤣

And it's the weather that gets grass growing, and it's growing right now. Pretending it's not doesn't change it,,,,
