To think people mowing their lawn in FEBRUARY are bonkers?!

Just that really!

Went for a walk yesterday, and passed about 200 houses en route to the woodlands 20 minutes walk away. At LEAST 30 people have mowed their lawn, or were mowing it.

It's February! Confused

It may have been sunny and warmish, but it didn't top 14 degrees C where I am, the washing only half dried, the solar lamps have faded 80% by 6am, and it was ONE degree C last night.

The poor lawns were battered by a severe drought, and severe heat last Spring/summer, for 4 months, and now they're being shaved down to nothing in February, and being exposed to almost zero degrees at night! And...... it's FEBRUARY!

Has anyone on here mowed theirs yet? If so. WHY? Confused

If a deep, hard, frost sets in, in one or 2 weeks (which could well happen as it will still be early March!) it will damage it!

Why would cutting grass leave it vulnerable to frost damage? As long as it's in good health already frost won't damage it.

bellabasset · 25/02/2019 08:38

It was 15• here yesterday and I actually cut my grass about 3 weeks ago, I don't cut it low though and just the areas by the house. The petrol mower hasn't been out though, just the electric one. I have cut the edges in the front lawn, put on feed, planted some more potted bulbs- and watered the plants.

StinkyCandle · 25/02/2019 08:39

I never understand people who let legal months dictate their lives instead of following the weather in real life.

If there's a glorious sunny weather in February and you are in a tshirt, it's perfectly ok to have a barbecue.
if it's cold at the beginning of August, I put the heating on. Why on earth would that be an issue?

Laundry dries really well all year round, around here it dries even better in the cold months because there's more wind than in the summer unless it's a really hot day.

ColeHawlins · 25/02/2019 08:39

Surely everyone knows not to cut short on the first cut of the year?

Stopandlook · 25/02/2019 08:41

Yes it’s February, but we were outside in T-shirt’s having a picnic yesterday.

Would mow the lawn if CBA. Clay underneath, survives most weather.

Purplecatshopaholic · 25/02/2019 08:43

As OH has cheated and been binned, I am going to have to find someone to do my garden - I have no idea where the mower even is!. The dog has pretty much wrecked the garden anyway so I am not overly concerned! I live in Scotland so its not top of my priority list for a while - we could quite easily have snow, ice and god knows what until at least April! If you live down south and its balmy and great weather, lucky you, lol

Andro · 25/02/2019 08:43

I thought about giving ours a trim but didn't get around to it...then woke up to white grass and a fairly hard frost this morning. Trimming it was such a tempting idea at 16 C with bright sun though!

Fluffyears · 25/02/2019 08:48

Ha ha it’s too cold in Scotland just yet.

eggsandwich · 25/02/2019 08:49

I was still moving my lawn in December, got quite a large garden so like to keep on top of it, also we’ve got alot of tree’s with pine needles on so its more collecting up them than actually cutting the grass.

GingerRogers84 · 25/02/2019 08:49

Grass is a plant that always survives no matter what abuse you give it. I didn't water my lawn during the scorching summer and it went brown but it survived.
I just wish my houseplants were as forgiving to me! Grin

HoraceCope · 25/02/2019 08:50

I considered putting my lawncuttters, guineapigs out, yesterday, in fact what about today?

morningconstitutional2017 · 25/02/2019 08:54

According to the traditional 'rules of gardening' you don't mow your lawn in February but Mother Nature can't read. My lawn is getting a bit on the long side - if it were late Spring I'd definitely mow it.

I keep looking at it and it needs mowing. Yes, it's February and I don't want to do it but I can't let it get much longer or the 'push-me, pull-you' mower won't cope.

The weather isn't following the old traditions so the job will have to be done.

Huntawaymama · 25/02/2019 08:56

I cut mine in January! And will do again today. It's growing and my farmer husband warns if I don't cut it he'll put sheep on it to graze it. I also find it very therapeutic

sulflower · 25/02/2019 08:59

Ha ha it’s too cold in Scotland just yet.

It's been quite mild in the NE (well what we consider mild Grin). Just looked out the window and the grass could definitely do with a tidy up.

nutbrownhare15 · 25/02/2019 08:59

Just opened the bathroom window and can hear a mower Grin

livelyredjellybean · 25/02/2019 08:59

My boss - whose job it is to cut grass (they make hay) - was doing their lawn yesterday; I’m pretty sure they wouldn’t do it if it was going to kill their lawn!

thecatsthecats · 25/02/2019 09:03

My FIL is one of those mow to within a milimetre kind of guys. Drives me nuts because he ALWAYS thinks our lawn needs doing and I always think their lawn looks like a sad scrubby little thing.

I did want to mow ours this weekend though, as PP above say, because it makes cat poo removal easier. Holding out for confirmation of our garden waste collection though.

mum2jakie · 25/02/2019 09:03

I'm going to mow mine this afternoon once the grass is completely dry. I love doing the first cut of the year. Don't care about the date on the calendar. Last year I mowed early and we had heavy snow the next day. Grass was fine.

Enb76 · 25/02/2019 09:04

My guinea pigs are excellent lawn mowers, my neighbours all envy my close cut swarthe. On the downside, they would also eat all my plants if I didn’t fence all the beds off.

mydogisthebest · 25/02/2019 09:04

We didn't mow ours but quite a few neighbours did. We did have a general tidy of the garden and did some weeding.

We have had some lovely weather and I have been getting washing dry on the line for a good few days.

I do keep remembering though that we had bad snow last year and it didn't start until 28th Feb!

SmarmyMrMime · 25/02/2019 09:05

Mine needs doing as some parts are getting very long and uneven. It just needs a high cut to take the tops off then as the milder weather gets more reliable, I'll lower the blades. It has been done at the end of Febrary before. It was last done in early November which helped to lift the leaves off.

I kept a green lawn last year, it was only cut about 4 times with the long winter flipping to summer and by-passing spring. It was looking due for a cut just as the hot weather was being forecast and I held off which helped to stop it drying out so much. It didn't need doing for about two months. I was bemused by people razing their lawns short out of habit in the middle of the heatwave then wondering why they looked like toast.

My car needs its spring clean too!

SmarmyMrMime · 25/02/2019 09:06

Frosts can regularly happen well into May and occasionally beyond. That's well into authorised grass cutting season Wink

Kazzyhoward · 25/02/2019 09:07

Has anyone on here mowed theirs yet? If so. WHY?

The grass has grown. I've mowed it on a high setting to take off the excess. Using a mower with a box also picks up all the crap that falls off the trees, such as leaves, small branches, etc - far quicker and easier than raking the crap off it.

Janus · 25/02/2019 09:08

Mowed mine about 10 days a go!! I have 3 dogs and there were quite a lot of leaves on it too and a boy who loves to play football!! It had to be done! I also put down grass seed for the bare spots and not one seed has sprouted so maybe a bit ambitious!!

NCforthis2019 · 25/02/2019 09:08

Errrrr what?! Don’t be ridiculous. And find proper problems to be annoyed about, I’ll mow when I want thanks - grass doesn’t care about weather - they’re pretty hardy. Confused
