To think people mowing their lawn in FEBRUARY are bonkers?!

Just that really!

Went for a walk yesterday, and passed about 200 houses en route to the woodlands 20 minutes walk away. At LEAST 30 people have mowed their lawn, or were mowing it.

It's February! Confused

It may have been sunny and warmish, but it didn't top 14 degrees C where I am, the washing only half dried, the solar lamps have faded 80% by 6am, and it was ONE degree C last night.

The poor lawns were battered by a severe drought, and severe heat last Spring/summer, for 4 months, and now they're being shaved down to nothing in February, and being exposed to almost zero degrees at night! And...... it's FEBRUARY!

Has anyone on here mowed theirs yet? If so. WHY? Confused

If a deep, hard, frost sets in, in one or 2 weeks (which could well happen as it will still be early March!) it will damage it!

I started off the March sowing seeds in the (unheated plastic) greenhouses last week.

Figured the day temps were high enough to make an early go at it and they will be protected from any overnight frosts in there, the temperatures were quite warm inside even after dark. I’m not even in the SE or anywhere near it.

Nothing wrong with getting a head start while the weather allows especially if you have a plan to protect your work. Gardening is good for the spirits after all. Looking forward to some slightly early blooms this year if all goes well.

Haven’t mowed the grass but have been letting the rabbits at it and between them they scoff it so really don’t need to use a lawnmower.

Pinkblanket · 25/02/2019 10:00

Yes, because it was long enough to need cutting. I would have cut it if it was that long in June, so unsure what the issue is....

Singlenotsingle · 25/02/2019 10:01

My dp mowed our grass yesterday. It was looking quite scruffy and unkempt. If you don't mow it now, it'll carry on growing and in a few weeks it;ll be knee high and then you've got REAL problems.

Lllot5 · 25/02/2019 10:06

Mine needs doing but still very wet not attempting it for a while I don’t think.

ThatssomebadhatHarry · 25/02/2019 10:21

If lawns are boggy after rain cutting the grass can help the mud underneath dry out as the grass holds in the water.

Our neighbour was doing his. It's as if some people want to pretend winter is over as they're so desperate for some sun Grin We're in North Yorkshire and yes there were some warm days last week, but the soil and ground is still damp and like you say it's freezing on a night. Our lawn would have looked a mess if I'd cut it.

NutElla5x · 25/02/2019 11:14

I'm contemplating mowing mine today. I hung the washing out about 9.30 am,wearing a long sleeved t shirt and leggings and was boiling and have now changed into a t-shirt. AND my washing's nearly dry! I go by the actual weather and my senses and not the time of year.

soontobefour4 · 25/02/2019 11:14

You'd hate us OP, we've done ours twice this year. Not scalped though, there's still plenty of length there and it looks really healthy.

No one had lived in this house for years when we bought it and the gardens were completely overgrown and full of weeds. We've reseeded most of it and find it so much easier to keep on top of weeds if we cut it as regularly as we can. We're not green fingered by any means but trial and error has taught us that regular trimming is the best thing for it.

NutElla5x · 25/02/2019 11:15

I'm darn sarf by the way.

outpinked · 25/02/2019 11:16

It’s been 16/17 degrees and sunny for a few days here so I totally get why people would, I can’t be bothered though Grin.

ShesABelter · 25/02/2019 11:17

Can't say I feel such strong emotions about grass. If it looks messy then we will cut it if it is nice enough. Never ever had any issues in previous years doing the same.

Erm, because it’s too long. It’s been growing here for at least 3 weeks. Need to overseed and can’t do that with long grass.

Santaclarita · 25/02/2019 11:20

Ours needs a trim. The wet weather followed by warm weather has made it grow quickly. I was in a t-shirt yesterday. And I'm in the North of Scotland.

Go by what the weather is doing, not by the month. Its close to spring after all, this isn't abnormal.

Gth1234 · 25/02/2019 11:27

I look at the lawn and considered it, but then thought it was a bit too early.

sackrifice · 25/02/2019 12:12

I really enjoy mowing, I find it therapeutic and I also do the neighbour's lawn for her.

I am also obsessed with composting, and see all the mowings as potential ingredients to add to my compost mixes.

Megan2018 · 25/02/2019 12:15

Ours really needed mowing! But it was newly laid turf last Summer - so it didn't get parched or scorched. it had got really long and was completely dry. Mowing it also picks up the chicken poo (we have free range girls).

The horses are all fat too - our grass at the farm hasn't stopped growing all winter really - it's definitely not been typical weather.

halfmoonbay · 25/02/2019 12:21

I'll be mowing my grass after work & I'm wearing sandals today (why not?). Although did have to scrape the ice off the car first thing...

NannyRed · 25/02/2019 12:27

My lawns (front and back) need mowing, the only reason they’ve not been done is because we are busy renovating inside and weekend was taken up with tip runs, shopping for light fittings and taking delivery of new bathroom suit etc.

I will inform my lawns they should not be growing, but to be honest it’s grass, it does it’s own thing!

Iamboudicca · 25/02/2019 12:31

Its been so warm here that we reseeded our lawn on 23rd Decemebrr and it now needs cutting! Not doing it though, sunbathing and mumsnetting instead!

halfwitpicker · 25/02/2019 12:31

Utter madness.

Aridane · 25/02/2019 12:35

I didn't mow mine over the weekend as it didn't need doing as I moved it in DECEMBR

muchprefersummer · 25/02/2019 12:36

Mine got cut last month on a nice day. Dog poo and long grass is not a good combination. We tend to cut ours throughout the year and have never managed to kill it.

flowersaremyfave · 25/02/2019 12:42

Yep dh cut ours yesterday. The garden was a state from rubbish accumulated all winter. So he cut the grass, jeyes fluid the patio and concrete, cleaned all the kids toys and did two tip runs. Every time I walk past my window now I look out and it makes me happy! Nothing worse than an untidy unkept garden. Plus dog shit is easier to see if the grass is short 👌🏼

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername · 25/02/2019 14:03

I'm going to tackle mine this evening, it's way too long. I don't think it ever stopped growing this winter.

mum2jakie · 25/02/2019 14:29

I've just done the top lawn. Bottom is in the shade so still very wet. Not sure when I'll have the next opportunity to mow that part though!
