To think people mowing their lawn in FEBRUARY are bonkers?!

Just that really!

Went for a walk yesterday, and passed about 200 houses en route to the woodlands 20 minutes walk away. At LEAST 30 people have mowed their lawn, or were mowing it.

It's February! Confused

It may have been sunny and warmish, but it didn't top 14 degrees C where I am, the washing only half dried, the solar lamps have faded 80% by 6am, and it was ONE degree C last night.

The poor lawns were battered by a severe drought, and severe heat last Spring/summer, for 4 months, and now they're being shaved down to nothing in February, and being exposed to almost zero degrees at night! And...... it's FEBRUARY!

Has anyone on here mowed theirs yet? If so. WHY? Confused

If a deep, hard, frost sets in, in one or 2 weeks (which could well happen as it will still be early March!) it will damage it!

Sorry Judas Grin Blush

My across neighbour has a gardener since she list her husband last year.
I'm in love with him.
I haven't seen his face yet but I'm going to marry him.
He's such a treat to watch, hard working, tidy, quiet but Effective....sigh.

I’m a gardener and although mowing grass will not do it any harm at all I won’t start just yet. Grass is essentially a weed anywhere else in your garden and a nightmare to get rid of. Some sports turf is mown everyday of the year. My lawnmower stays tucked up in the shed until March 1st at the earliest because it’s a very long season cutting grass for hours every day until bonfire night!

Lonecatwithkitten · 25/02/2019 09:11

The moment it is above 6degrees for more than a couple of hours the grass will grow. Lesson one of grass land management. So your management is dictated by daily temperature not dates or seasons.

madcatladyforever · 25/02/2019 09:11

I mowed mine in December. It looks great now full of snowdrops and crocus.

Tinkobell · 25/02/2019 09:13

The UK is a hugely variable place. We are on IOW....it's very mild over there and in Jan we had lush green spring grass with flowering daisies that needed a good cut.

Tinkobell · 25/02/2019 09:15

IOW in Jan....green shoots everywhere

Ours was mowed this weekend. It won't come to any harm.

LordPickle · 25/02/2019 09:16

I'm in the midlands and I'm mowing mine today. My DS loves to play outside and it is growing rapidly with the recent mild weather.

Taffeta · 25/02/2019 09:17

Ours is looking a little shaggy* but no way it's getting mowed before April.

  • except the bits the fucking badgers have wrecked
Idonotlikeyoudonaldtrump · 25/02/2019 09:18

I loathe gardening but the lawn needs mowing! It’s really long!!

Fatted · 25/02/2019 09:18

My kids insisted on getting out to play in the garden this weekend. They were running around, on their bikes and having lots of fun. While I was sat in my coat, with a hot drink freezing my bits off!!

Taffeta · 25/02/2019 09:18

Oh and we are SE and at least one lot of neighbours had a BBQ yesterday Grin

Pk37 · 25/02/2019 09:22

You do need to get out more.
So do the people who moan about people wanting to wash their cars when the weathers nice . How does that effect you ? I’d rather wash my car when it’s warm out with no rain forecast for the week than stand out there when it’s 2 degrees knowing it’s going to piss down the next day and undo it all .
People get wound up by the strangest things ..

pisspawpatrol · 25/02/2019 09:24

I didn't mow the lawn but I did brutally prune an over grown hebe bush. DH washed both cars too. I like pretending it's spring!

Danni91 · 25/02/2019 09:24

Guinea pigs keep our grass cut short for us! Helpful things but sorry guys, we did have a BBQ! It got to 17 and the sun was beautiful we was sat out until 4ish.
Really enjoyed it too!

sanityisamyth · 25/02/2019 09:27

Grass grows whenever it gets above 9 degrees and it's been plenty warmer than that recently. If people want to mow their lawns to keep them tidy, that fine and they can make my favourite smell in the world

EntirelyAnonymised · 25/02/2019 09:28

We’ve had some really beautiful weather this last few days but this morning was really frosty. The grass wouldn’t have thanked me had I mowed it already.

That said, the first cut we do is only a ‘high cut’ anyway, taking the tips off. Then we lower the blades and go shorter as the season progresses. I’m not sure a ‘tips off’ trim would be too shocking. A scalping, maybe.

bobstersmum · 25/02/2019 09:29

I cut ours last weekend. It was very long in places and just looked untidy, I think a good cut freshens it up, its like it hoovers it as well! Anyway over a week later and it looks great, much healthier than it did. Its a very large lawn and starts looking like a field if it's not cared for. I don't plan on cutting it again for a good few weeks.

Thistledew · 25/02/2019 09:31

I mowed mine at the weekend. It had new growth on it. But to be fair I deliberately cut it down low as I wanted to re-seed it. I laid it with turf nearly 2 years ago but when I did it I was only able to get cheap turf that is pretty much all rye grass. I wanted to seed it with some finer leafed varieties as the rye grows upwards very quickly but isn't good for bushing out to make a nice thick mat.

EntirelyAnonymised · 25/02/2019 09:34

My brown wheelie bin is chocka too (council garden waste removal - we pay annually to opt in) after I had a scarifying/moss raking, weeding and general tidying up session last week. Collections recommence in March. Roll on next week!

sackrifice · 25/02/2019 09:37

I weeded, took off the hellebore leaves, took out some sweet woodruff, mowed the path and then composted. mowing the path is part of general maintenance and the reason we use grass for lawns and paths is the resilience of the plant to whatever comes at it.

Emeraldshamrock · 25/02/2019 09:39

can't you find pleasure in life in other ways?”
Yes at times. I must admit when I got home earlier, I felt immense pleasure when I saw my lovely tidy garden, the benefits of my weekend work. Grin

Oysterbabe · 25/02/2019 09:45

I'm going to cut the grass at my allotment this week, it's out of hand. Also I don't care if it dies.

stayathomegardener · 25/02/2019 09:51

Ummmm I cut ours in November, December, January and might cut it again today...
Grass grows all year round now and with over an acre of lawns if I left it until spring it would be a major battle.

LBOCS2 · 25/02/2019 09:56

All this thread has done is confirm that I really do need to mow my lawn. I missed the last cut last year and it's all shaggy and unkempt and I've been looking at it and wanting to do it all winter. Today may finally be the day!
