To think people mowing their lawn in FEBRUARY are bonkers?!

Just that really!

Went for a walk yesterday, and passed about 200 houses en route to the woodlands 20 minutes walk away. At LEAST 30 people have mowed their lawn, or were mowing it.

It's February! Confused

It may have been sunny and warmish, but it didn't top 14 degrees C where I am, the washing only half dried, the solar lamps have faded 80% by 6am, and it was ONE degree C last night.

The poor lawns were battered by a severe drought, and severe heat last Spring/summer, for 4 months, and now they're being shaved down to nothing in February, and being exposed to almost zero degrees at night! And...... it's FEBRUARY!

Has anyone on here mowed theirs yet? If so. WHY? Confused

If a deep, hard, frost sets in, in one or 2 weeks (which could well happen as it will still be early March!) it will damage it!

It’s 17 here today and I’m having a coffee before I mow the lawn 🙂

LoniceraJaponica · 25/02/2019 18:54

Prompted by this thread I cut the grass today Grin

needsleepzzz · 25/02/2019 19:01

Doing ours on Saturday, very long right now, we'll set the mower on a mid setting though so won't cut too short, we also mow around the patches of bulbs

sickmumma · 25/02/2019 19:09

We've mown ours a couple of times since Xmas - we are just outside London - our grass is the nicest when looking out the window and DH is a landscape gardener so I don't think he would bother if it would kill it all off and tbh didn't question him on it because the kids have been out there quite a bit!

londonrach · 25/02/2019 19:10

I need to cut ours! Its very long. Should have done it weeks ago!!!

sickmumma · 25/02/2019 19:11

NDN has a bbq at the weekend that's even stranger haha! I mean it was warm
Today but not bbq weather!!

vodkaredbullgirl · 25/02/2019 19:24

Might cut mine tomorrow, as someone else said its easier to find the dog poop lol

Onesmallstepforaman · 25/02/2019 19:25

As long as the ground isn't too wet and there's no frost on the leaf, it's better to keep topping the grass. This keeps the crown of the plant tighter to the ground and prevents the sward thinning. As a general rule, don't remove more than a third of the leaf at any time of year.

StinkyCandle · 25/02/2019 19:25

depends where you are, my kids spent the day on the beach yesterday and we had a barbecue with friends. Definitively warm enough in the South.

SherlockSays · 25/02/2019 19:28

I asked DH to do ours last weekend but he said it's too early - the grass is quite long now and picking up dog dirt is even worse than usual because of it Angry

StoneofDestiny · 25/02/2019 19:33

Ours needed cutting, so it got cut! Daffodils are out, sun chair out and blossom on the tree.

rainbowruthie · 25/02/2019 19:45

Add my DH to the 'bonkers list' our grass has had two cuts and looks good for it + it's fun being a little bit bonkers Grin

rslsys · 25/02/2019 21:23

A few years back the autumn was really wet and I didn't manage to get a 'last cut of the season' in.
It was very dry over Christmas and I cut our grass on 6th January. We then had frosts & snow - no effect on the grass whatsoever!

Besides, grass only grows twice - once at the start of the season and once every time you cut it . . .

Littlebird88 · 25/02/2019 21:27

I cut ours today!
the toddler couldn't play as she needed waterproofs as the grass was so long and damp.
lawnmower cleaned afterwards. all fine

Budsbegginingspringinsight · 25/02/2019 21:29

Yep! Ours done too... because it's Been covered in cat shit and a no go zone

YoungChrone · 25/02/2019 21:33

I mowed ours last week, it was 12degrees. DD spent half term playing in the garden and the grass was so long it was staying quite wet/muddy. I gave it a mow on the day it dries out. I’m careful though, the first mow shouldn’t be too short. Much easier to play on now.

onthenaughtystepagain · 25/02/2019 21:49

We had to reseed a lot of ours last October after last year's Saharan summer, as a result we now have large areas of fairly long grass whoch we intend taking the top off this week, sorry if you are offended. Is it really any of your business when other people cut their grass?

macaroniandpizza · 25/02/2019 21:52

I contemplated it yesterday morning then thought nahh Grin

m0therofdragons · 25/02/2019 21:59

Haha yes I thought people were bonkers too. Yes, my lawn needs cutting but too early and it'll suffer. Yes it was warm yesterday but I scrapped ice off my windshield this morning!

castielchace · 25/02/2019 22:07

I'm on my fourth cut of this year!!! First cut was early January😁I did the fourth cut yesterday..it's looks lovely X all my neighbours cut theis..keeps any leaves of the grass as well, you can't kill grass XX get your grass cut op

StoneofDestiny · 25/02/2019 22:10

Ours is on second cut. First one in January. Unbelievable mild winter and warm spring so far. Bees flying 🐝 already. Climate change is real.

BiteyShark · 25/02/2019 22:10

Frost doesn't kill my grass. The only thing that kills my grass is my dogs pee.

m0therofdragons · 25/02/2019 22:15

Unbelievable mild winter

We were sledging less than 3 weeks ago Confused

nocoolnamesleft · 25/02/2019 22:16

I didn't mow my grass. My next door neighbour's lad did. Like he does in the summer. I presume he has a cash flow problem....

Esspee · 25/02/2019 22:20

We've cut ours. Grin
