To think this cafe needs to rethink their message to customers?

Seen this on Facebook today from a cafe -

So we are a dog friendly cafe which is completely acceptable by health and safety as long as the dogs don’t cook your food or enter the kitchen 😡 so don’t give us a hard time if you don’t like dogs because we like dogs better than humans - note don’t give Vicky a hard time over happy dogs because Vicky will always defend the dogs

Now I have a bit of a fear of dogs and wouldn't expect to see one in a cafe and I'd be a bit pissed off if I paid good money for food and drink only to be bollocked by "Vicky" if I didn't like a dog in my face Hmm AIBU to think it's not a good message to tell your paying customers that they come second to another species?

The cats don't seem to enjoy it much. Cat cafes, I mean. The ones in Leeds & Nottingham claim to be supporting homeless cats, but they seem to be money making exercises to me. Pimping cats.

Humboles · 25/02/2019 01:04

My and my partner's children are grown up now, and we like both dogs and kids a lot. We use a lovely café/restaurant in our rural shire where happily both are welcome, and have never known a dog cause a problem there. We've sometimes witnessed noisy children wrecking the peace there, though, while the parents seem unable to maintain control. Surely, if a child or a dog becomes a nuisance, the offender should be taken outside immediately. Just because whoever brings them in feels at ease, it doesn't follow that others feel equally chilled, and paying customers have a right to a relaxing experience, don't they?

Lobsterquadrille2 · 25/02/2019 04:40

We have a cat cafe. They rather startled me when I saw them in the window. You can buy food for them and they have loads of toys and climbing things.

Lobsterquadrille2 · 25/02/2019 04:42

This one is in Tonbridge. Paws Cafe.

maddiemookins16mum · 25/02/2019 06:48

I dont mind dogs in a cafe, but the tone of the message/owner is too aggressive.

Aridane · 25/02/2019 07:28

The cafe has outstanding reviews, although Vicky can be a bit feisty in responding to some of them

sophe · 25/02/2019 07:37

Brilliant message. The cafe is fully entitled to admit whom they choose as long as they make the terms completely clear and do not exclude people by gender or race or disability. You should be pleased to know in advance that this is not the place for you.

I applaud them. I prefer animals to people. Hell is other people.

Raspberry88 · 25/02/2019 07:52

Kids who are afraid of dogs have been poorly parented anyway.

I've seen an awful lot of stupid comments on Mumsnet but this one really takes the biscuit!
Never understood people insisting that there are lots of other options...I don't know what Silloth is like but I'll bet it isn't like Birmingham City Centre. Lots of small places have very limited choices.
It's completely rational to be afraid of dogs and also completely fine to not like them. I don't like them very much...I do like children though and think that it's sad how many people have such a miserable attitude towards children here...always judging parents with no knowledge of people's circumstances. I mean, it's not like you can leave your toddler at home whilst you pop out. But as long as dog people are allowed to take your dogs out that's fine...just make sure the children, babies, disabled people keep quiet and don't bother you.

onegiftedgal · 25/02/2019 07:52

I totally agree with you op. It's disgusting.
But then they are probably the sort of cafe that don't want to be popular, they just want their usual dog looking customers.
I appreciate that I'm in the minority but I just don't get why people want dogs - they are hard work, children get bored of 'looking' after them, dirty and hairy and stink out the house and you have to pick up their shit in a 'plastic' (great for the environment) bag. That's if they haven't arse wiped it all over your house already.
It's making me heave just thinking about her set up.

ShatnersWig · 25/02/2019 07:59

Maybe they are trying to become the next White Moose Cafe?

Roussette · 25/02/2019 08:06

Agree. And ironic to think this is a parenting forum.

Does it have to be either/or? It seems to me that some dog lovers go out of their way to either hate children or think as a PP has said... 'other people are hell'.

How the heck you cope with real life, the supermarket, friends, neighbours god alone knows if other people are hell. I like some dogs. I love some people. I adore some children, especially my own. In the pecking order humans come before animals, dogs included.

OftenHangry · 25/02/2019 08:11

I just don't get why people want dogs

Because you will probably not find any other creature which would be THAT loyal.
But dogs are not for everyone and some will never like them and that's fine. Same like some people hate cats. Or hamsters. Or children.
I have the fondest memories of my dogs from when I was younger. So does my mum. She could have left me in my pram in front of the shop (massive prams, not at all like today) and no one would be able to touch me because the dog guarded me. And because people still had common sense, no one actually even tried. All my dogs were trained to defend me at my command and guard me. I honestly miss them all.

You can buy bio degradable bags nowadays very easily (like with ANY other kind of bags). They are getting really quite cheap.

Roussette · 25/02/2019 08:15

But dogs are not for everyone and some will never like them and that's fine. Same like some people hate cats. Or hamsters. Or children

I just don't get why we lump human beings (children, who grow up to be adults) along with animals.

ShatnersWig · 25/02/2019 08:36

I like some dogs. I love some people. I adore some children

So you're not capable of loving a dog then?

Roussette · 25/02/2019 08:43

My own quite possibly Shatners but I don't have one. I still put humans before animals.

I love children that are close to me and aren't my own, I love other humans, I don't love other people's dogs, no.

SoSaidTheHorse · 25/02/2019 08:56

Children may grow into human beings(who are also animals) but they still often display a lot of traits that the dog haters complain about e.g running around, getting under other people's tables(been there, making noise etc. I've had many meals out ruined by children, currently zero have been ruined by dogs. Obvious,y that will differ from person to person.

I don't see what's wrong with caring about other species either. We've fucked the planet up(and I include myself in that) by thinking that we're all that matters, that the earth is ours to use as we please, and that other species and even other humans who aren't exactly like us, really don't matter. Of course a dog friendly cafe won't alleviate that but many people still have that attitude.

OftenHangry · 25/02/2019 08:58

Dogs have mental capacity of 2 year old child.

It's all about the adult handling them and teaching them how to behave.🤷‍♀️ Children and dogs.

So actually our problems shouldn't be with dogs or children but with the adult responsible, I guess

GunpowderGelatine · 25/02/2019 08:59

YY Rousette it makes me wonder what kind of relationships people have IRL if they "hate people". I love people. I adore children. I would hate to have such a low tolerance for my fellow man, imagine being so easily irritated and having to go to the supermarket for example and deal with all the little annoyances.

I completely agree @onegiftedgal I really can't see the appeal of having a dog at all (they are bloody cute though). But admitting that to some people is like admitting you're s serial killer Grin

OP posts:
GunpowderGelatine · 25/02/2019 09:01

Because you will probably not find any other creature which would be THAT loyal.

With respect, that's because they have no choice - dogs are essentially enslaved to whichever human picked them out and they rely on the human for food and exercise and a quality of life. They are not our equals or treated equally, you can't expect the same standard of relationship you get from a human

OP posts:
ShatnersWig · 25/02/2019 09:02

I love people

What, ALL of them?

I adore children

What, ALL of them?

SoSaidTheHorse · 25/02/2019 09:03

Do you want your medal in the post for loving people so much more than anyone else, or should I give it to you now?

ShatnersWig · 25/02/2019 09:03

I completely agree. I really can't see the appeal of having a dog at all

A lot of people say that about children.

GunpowderGelatine · 25/02/2019 09:03

Don't be obtuse @ShatnersWig - but as a class of people (rather than all individuals) yes I do love people and children.

Do you love ALL dogs?

OP posts:
GunpowderGelatine · 25/02/2019 09:04

@ShatnersWig fair enough but why child haters would be on a parenting forum is beyond me

OP posts:
ShatnersWig · 25/02/2019 09:05

No. But then I also don't "love people" collectively or "adore children" collectively either.
