AIBU?

To think this cafe needs to rethink their message to customers?

Seen this on Facebook today from a cafe -

So we are a dog friendly cafe which is completely acceptable by health and safety as long as the dogs don’t cook your food or enter the kitchen 😡 so don’t give us a hard time if you don’t like dogs because we like dogs better than humans - note don’t give Vicky a hard time over happy dogs because Vicky will always defend the dogs

Now I have a bit of a fear of dogs and wouldn't expect to see one in a cafe and I'd be a bit pissed off if I paid good money for food and drink only to be bollocked by "Vicky" if I didn't like a dog in my face Hmm AIBU to think it's not a good message to tell your paying customers that they come second to another species?

The population in this country is increasing due to immigration rather than couples procreating.

These figures make interesting reading.

Yes I know we have an ageing population but you can't just keep adding more and more humans to it.

I agree - I can't see the point of adding more and more young people (who will also grow old . . . ).

i appreciate that for one, possible two generations, the poor old people will be struggling to find someone to care for them as there are too few younger ones to do the job (I would be one of those oldies), but then it would right and balance itself and careful population control,l would stop it getting top-heavy again.

I do agree with you about big families, I don't think that's a good idea at all with climate change. But I don't see how having 1 or 2 children will actually increase the population, I think, as it's balanced by the fact that everyone who is born will eventually die.

The population in this country is increasing due to immigration rather than couples procreating.

I do worry about my DDs' future, so I agree with you on that point.

Anyway, I'll bow out here. I apologise for sounding goady.

The global birth rate is falling and has been for most of the last century. The reason we have lots of people is because of medical advances. Roads are busy because more people drive than ever before, not because of the slight increase in UK population over the last 30 years. And your dog, introduced to the planet solely as a companion for you, does more environmental damage than a non driving vegetarian.

Lizzie48, ONE of the reasons we chose not to have children was because we felt the world was already overpopulated. You can believe it or not.

We also had seen too many marriages have problems because of children, a lot ending in divorce. In fact a friend's grandma said to us that if we wanted to stay as happy as we were we should not have children.

Another reason was that we felt the world was not a particularly nice place to bring children into. We feel that even more now. I am a worrier anyway so having children would just have ramped up my worrying and anxiety so much.

I don't honestly know how anyone can say the planet is not overpopulated. Yes I know we have an ageing population but you can't just keep adding more and more humans to it.

The UK is far too overcrowded with far too many people. Not enough housing, the schools can't cope, the hospitals can't cope, the GP surgeries can't cope, the trains can't cope. God knows the roads can't cope.

Done any car journeys recently? My DH drives quite a bit for work and we also do a 3 hour journey frequently to visit family. That supposed 3 hour journey hardly ever takes 3 hours. It is more often 4, sometimes 5 and has even taken 6 hours.

Last week one day my husband was doing a supposed 4 hour round trip. It took 7 hours. Any journey over about an hour takes longer, often much longer, than it should. Motorways are often at a complete standstill. The way we are going the whole country will be gridlocked in the not too distant future.

So all that without even talking about climate change.

I worry enough about the future for my nieces and nephews. Just glad I don't have my own children to worry about

I am going to book a long weekend in Cumbria in April and will definitely go to this café.

I posted on their facebook page and someone I know (but not very well) posted also and said they had been there with their dogs and loved it.

They can piss on your carpets, refuse to obey you or run away.

Children or dogs?

Both obviously. Children when they're potty training and I think it's mostly puppies before they've been trained out of it.

Making this my last argumentative post on here, as it's getting boring and nasty.

I hope people still post funny stuff about it though, and I might show my appreciation of that

Gunpowder, SOME children may bring more joy and unconditional love than they do heartache and despair but a hell of a lot don't

Same as dogs then really?

I note you did not address the fact that dogs can and do run away, thus going NC with their owners, something you claimed they cannot do

I thought this comment was tongue in cheek/ it's not quite the same though is it?

Dogs are definitely not as cute as guinea pigs. And guinea pigs are veggie so their poo doesn't smell.

@mydogisthebest

The world is overpopulated enough without us adding to it plus we wanted to give our marriage a chance without children ruining it.

This is one chestnut that is always thrown in by childfree people to make their decision not to have children a moral one rather than just a personal choice which they have every right to make.

Also, the world in its entirety might be over populated, but in the west we have an ageing population. Hence in France, the government pays families extra if they have more than 2 children. This was because the population was declining rather than increasing. I got this from a good friend who married a Frenchman. I don't know if that's still the case, this was over 10 years ago. Possibly not, in view of increasing immigration.

Who is going to contribute taxes to pay for NHS costs (if there still is such a thing in years to come) for when you're elderly and infirm?

And I'm not trying to justify my decision to contribute to the over population of the world, as as DH and I adopted our DDs, so we're not guilty on that score.

As for your statement that dogs are more cute than children, that's very much open to debate! I love my cats, but I would never say they're more cute than my DDs (though it's true that they don't do backchat 🤣).

Yes, children can go NC. But your life partner can divorce you or cheat on you. Human beings cause each other pain. Any type of relationship with another human being is by definition taking a risk.

I know.

Dogs are immensely superior. But they're still not as good as cats.

Gunpowder, SOME children may bring more joy and unconditional love than they do heartache and despair but a hell of a lot don't.

As for them being faithful companions until you die what a load of bollocks. That is mainly true of dogs but certainly not true of children. My DH had no contact whatsoever with his parents for over 10 years before they died. I know quite a few people who never see their children. Even if close what if they emigrate to Australia?

Soupdragon, no we chose not to have children. The world is overpopulated enough without us adding to it plus we wanted to give our marriage a chance without children ruining it.

Nothing I have seen from my friends' children has ever made me feel I have missed out. On the contrary it just makes me glad that we chose not to have any. I have see the heartache and real despair that some children cause. Even if children were absolutely perfect with no problems I still would not want any. Dogs are much easier and more cute

I’ve never been bitten by my dog

I still have faint scars on my wrist where my childhood dog bit me over 40 years ago (he was protecting my dad in a play fight). My children never bit me.
