To think this cafe needs to rethink their message to customers?

Seen this on Facebook today from a cafe -

So we are a dog friendly cafe which is completely acceptable by health and safety as long as the dogs don’t cook your food or enter the kitchen 😡 so don’t give us a hard time if you don’t like dogs because we like dogs better than humans - note don’t give Vicky a hard time over happy dogs because Vicky will always defend the dogs

Now I have a bit of a fear of dogs and wouldn't expect to see one in a cafe and I'd be a bit pissed off if I paid good money for food and drink only to be bollocked by "Vicky" if I didn't like a dog in my face Hmm AIBU to think it's not a good message to tell your paying customers that they come second to another species?

I don’t really like how the msg is written.. but I think the concept is fine! There are plenty of non dog cafes for non dog lovers to visit! I think it’s great having places you can take your pets.

FaFoutis · 24/02/2019 22:43

Same with my children Iam. My youngest is frightened of dogs, the other two are not.
Fear of dogs is not irrational. Not that I would say that to my child, and I have had dogs as pets in the past so I'm not anti-dog.

cosmicangel · 24/02/2019 22:43

A lot of the cafe owners comments were copied from her personal Facebook page and taken out of context when added to the business ones.
I think everyone should be entitled to a rant when you've had a shit day in work(20 years of working in retail & coffee shops means I definitely did) but not for strangers to copy it online so people can have a go at you.

AndhowcouldIeverrefuse · 24/02/2019 22:43

But they should not expect the world to rearrange itself around that.

'Course not. The world should rearrange itself around poorly trained dogs and inconsiderate owners.

Oh and being wary around dogs is perfectly rational. A phobia - for example, someone on a documentary who wouldn't touch their family because she was scared she would get glitter on her clothes - is quite different.

Same old arguments being brought up again and again!

RedHelenB · 24/02/2019 22:44

At least they're upfront unlike a cafe near us that asked us to leave cos our dogs barked a bit (not constantly and not loudly )

Best solution is to have one of each in any vicinity.

Leapfrog44 · 24/02/2019 22:48

@GunpowderGelatine no, it's just food for thought. If I was afraid of dogs or anything else I'd totally want to challenge that and defeat it.

I suffered from severe post traumatic stress after a violet sex attack and I had therapy. I can walk the streets alone at night without any problems.

I've had anxiety but I recognise it as MY problem not anyone else's.

I think what you should take from this thread is that it's possibly YOUR anxiety over dogs that is the problem, not the attitude of the cafe owner and her dog-loving clientele.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 24/02/2019 22:50

OP - I am a dog owner. I LOVE dogs. They are amazing!

I accept that there are many cafes and even more shops where my dogs aren't welcome. I don't complain about this, or try to take my dogs in. Sometimes this means I can't get a cup of coffee at all, or have to sit outside in the rain. Such is life.

You are not a dog owner. You loathe dogs. In your eyes they are the Spawn of Satan.

Why is it so difficult for you to accept that there are some cafes and a few shops where dogs are welcome, and that you do not have to go into because you can eat/ shop somewhere else? Why do you feel the need to complain so vociferously about not being able to go not places where there might be a dog? - especially when it is your own choice not to enter, and there are other places to go.

And I can honestly say that I have never, ever, been anywhere where other people's dogs have leapt up at my food, my face etc when I have been having a meal in any dog-friendly place. Occasionally a dog will have little yap when another comes in, but I have never witnessed prolonged barking or fights, or the sort of behaviour you and some others seem to think is inevitable. That's because most owners don't take badly-behaved dogs into such establishments.

Unfortunately the same can't be said for most parents of badly-behaved children, alas.

Notasunnybunny · 24/02/2019 22:53

There are many dog friendly cafe’s / pubs around here but all are clear that dogs should be well behaved and not disturb other customers. I think when you start favouring the dogs the balance is wrong. Domesticated dogs need to conform to acceptable standards of behaviour when in public. This cafe sounds like it is condoning poor animal husbandry and excusing poor training. Poorly quality dog ownership has a habit of resulting in dogs biting and needing to be put to sleep. Someone who truly loves dogs would understand why it’s not in the best interest of the dog to let it behave badly. Dogs do not think like humans, ‘fur babies’ very often believe they rank higher in the pack than other humans and so will be inclined to nip at said humans if they annoy them. Owners who allow dogs to develop those feelings do them no favours.

GunpowderGelatine · 24/02/2019 23:02

Please do not dramatise things @SchadenfreudePersonified it's pathetic.

Why do dog lovers take it so personally when people say they don't like dogs?! Very odd indeed. And a bit alarming that they bang on about badly behaved children as if it's even remotely the same as a badly behaved dog. I've never heard of a child mauling a newborn to death yet people feel the need to make comparisons. Hence my suspicions about people who have low tolerance for humans and children, but adore creatures that can't challenge or answer back

Why is it so difficult for you to accept that there are some cafes and a few shops where dogs are welcome, and that you do not have to go into because you can eat/ shop somewhere else?

It's not. I do accept that

Why do you feel the need to complain so vociferously about not being able to go not places where there might be a dog?

I don't.

Have you even read my posts?

She’s actually one of the happiest, friendliest people you’ll ever meet. It’s my granddaughter’s favourite place to visit and easily one of the best tea rooms in Cumbria.

And no, I’m not a friend or relative of Vicky, I just like good food and service - and Fairydust Emporium provides both. 😊

IncrediblySadToo · 24/02/2019 23:08

countrygirl99.

Stopped at a cafe with my horse yesterday. I was tempted by the cream tea but didn't want a fight over the scones so stuck to ice cream

I won’t be letting the 13yo see this, she’ll be wanting to know if you’ll adopt her 🤣

Grumpelstilskin · 24/02/2019 23:10

Oh feck off OP! There are so few dog-friendly places and plenty of alternatives for you to go, so stop first world outrage and just go somewhere else.

dutysuite · 24/02/2019 23:11

I avoid any food and drink establishment that allows dogs. If I see a dog by a table I leave. I like dogs but I just don't like other people's dogs near me when I am eating. The notice wouldn't offend me I just wouldn't stay.

Shar2807 · 24/02/2019 23:33

I was actually there and sat at the next table to these two chocolate Labs.....yes they did bark as we entered with our dog....yes they did bark when another dog left......were we bothered NO! Did we receive exceptional service? YES, was our food cooked fresh and delicious? YES! Would I go even if I had no dog? YES!!!
The staff are all lovely, friendly and would do anything to help.

This is one of the places I always book a table at on our annual trip to Silloth and we all look forward to it....mostly because we can take our beloved 4 legged friend with us and the children love that fact as they don’t like leaving him out when we want a treat.
If this person who ranted is so opposed to dogs, why were they there in the first place???? It clearly states it’s a dog friendly cafe.....what more can the owner do? It is a fantastic business Ethos, EVERY table in there was full so just carry on what your doing as your doing a great job!!!!

keepforgettingmyusername · 24/02/2019 23:36

Why are you going on about phobias now Hmmif you have a phobia of dogs then don't go to a dog friendly cafe.

HaroldsSocalledBluetits · 24/02/2019 23:42

Lol is anyone else thinking that Vicky's friends here aren't exactly coming across as adverts for a place they'd like to spend time in? It's all very Craggy Island.

Shar2807 · 24/02/2019 23:48

I’m not a friend of Vicky, I just enjoy visiting the cafe FYI Haroldssocalledbluetits

NunoGoncalves · 24/02/2019 23:54

TBF it has extremely good reviews on tripadvisor!

Just goes to show that just because someone comes across as slightly weird and aggressive on social media, doesn't mean they don't know how to run a great café!

GunpowderGelatine · 24/02/2019 23:56

Grin The town is gorgeous with a lovely green and old fashioned fair and arcades but yes it's all very "what's this Tubbs we'll have no trouble here". A local we met there once told us that a few years ago another local spotted a black man that he didn't recognise so called the police Confused I'm sure that's just an urban myth though Grin

I haven't even read all the thread. I'm not a dog lover, if I read that though I wouldn't take it all to heart and expect the world to revolve around me though. I'd just go elsewhere.
Sounds like Vicky has had enough of whiners to me.
Don't like, don't go. It'd not rocket science.

Hold the phone - there are cat cafes?! Where?! I love cats but DH is highly allergic so we can't have one

One in Leeds city centre for starters. My idea of hell but each to their own lol

HaroldsSocalledBluetits · 25/02/2019 00:02

Shock Gunpowder was this the man who told you about the near crime incident?

To think this cafe needs to rethink their message to customers?
Vivianebrezilletbrooks · 25/02/2019 00:05

Pit bull like dogs do attack people it is a fact and being afraid of them does not make you a c* just aware that they could harm you.
To love dogs more than human to me is weird and makes you sound like a permanent singleton.
If your kid is scared of kids it's indicative of bad dog owners not bad parenting, but I guess that can only have been said by a bad dog owner! Hmm

Vivianebrezilletbrooks · 25/02/2019 00:06

Scared of dogs not kids.. I meant!

Lizzie48 · 25/02/2019 00:10

@LimeKiwi I love cats (I have 4), but I can't imagine what the point is of a cat cafe? I can't see what pleasure the cat would get from it. Okay, maybe a whole tin of tuna, but they can have that in the comfort of their home. Grin
