To call my children names that rhyme?

Is it really that bad? For clarity - we don't want them to rhyme - it's just the name we like for our soon to be born daughter rhymes with that of our son.

I know it's annoying when people are cryptic on these threads so my son's name is Theo and we want to call our little girl Cleo. they have a Greek dad hence the names that work in Greek and English - and also we want short names as their surnames are very long! We don't do middle names.

So is it really awful - or should I not care what people might think and just call them what we want? Will it set us all up for a lifetime of confusion?!

If it is really that bad - any other name suggestions? I'm running out of ideas!

Actually that's untrue.

Have just spent the last few minutes repeatedly saying them out loud...

highheelsandbobblehats · 22/02/2019 21:34

Aria isn't pretentious at all. It's absolutely bloody gorgeous!

OldNo7 · 22/02/2019 21:36

Theo and Cora?

Cora is Greek.

cowcreamer · 22/02/2019 21:36

Oh, in my accent it totally rhymes with carrier!

I thought it was Ahh-ria...?

Aria isn't pretentious at all. It's absolutely bloody gorgeous!

A resounding endorsement! I wasn't saying I thought it was - just wondering if others might think so

My youngest son's name rhymes with my own, I genuinely didn't realise until I went to the first coffee morning/ baby group thing and had to introduce us; I just cringed so much. Yes to pp suggesting you practice introducing you as a group, or calling their names in the playground etc.

DanielRicciardosSmile · 22/02/2019 21:44

Aria is lovely but you might find she shares a class with several Aryas so might be a little too similar. Ariadne is lovely though. As us Calliope.

Apparently when I was born my Dad wanted to call me Andromeda, not sure I'd go for that one though.

EstrellaDamn · 22/02/2019 21:49

I don't know, I'm Scottish so it's a short 'a' sound for me. I know a baby Aria and she's lovely.

wildbhoysmama · 22/02/2019 21:53

Ande? Iola? I know both of these, both lovely xxx

Proseccoagain · 22/02/2019 22:00

I thought Clea, but just seen it's already been mentioned.

Jaxtellerswife · 22/02/2019 22:07

Wouldn't even worry about it. Our sons rhymes with my stepsons. It was purely coincidental because we loved the name. Nobody bats an eyelid

Enko · 22/02/2019 22:29

I would do it if you love the name OP..

DD2 and DD3 have names that have the same ending. However they are spelled so differently we honestly had not worked it out and nor do many others until they have to say the 2 names together.. then you hear the Eah sound at the end It works fine to be honest and they are 19 and 15 now.

lucylockett27 · 22/02/2019 22:35

As mentioned both are lovely names but harsh together. I went to school with twins sefan and stephanie!

lucylockett27 · 22/02/2019 22:36

lola would be nice (with a long surname that works with cleo)

itssquidstella · 22/02/2019 22:42

Hebe is a gorgeous name. It's Greek for 'youth'.

OkOkWhatsNext · 22/02/2019 22:52

Start calling Theo Ted or Teddy instead?!

DianaPrincessOfThemyscira · 22/02/2019 23:00

It’s absolutely fine. Those that have an issue with it are the problem imo.

Mine and my brother’s name rhyme. It is so not a problem. But then, I never get the obsession with choosing the right name, not too pretentious not too chavvy mustn’t rhyme mustn’t be the same or similar to any name in the family tree and if you like a diminutive be sure to put the long name on the birth certificate!

Just choose names that you love for your children.

LyndaLaHughes · 22/02/2019 23:03

It's Irish but what about Cliona?

StripyDeckchair · 22/02/2019 23:04

Op - did you see the suggestion of Charis? Beautiful name I think.

Or how about Ione?

liverbird10 · 22/02/2019 23:11

My mother did this ( "not deliberately," says she) with my sister and I. She has yet to be forgiven. Wink

changeznameza · 22/02/2019 23:25

Theo and Cleo? Nope, sorry.

Great suggestion to start calling Theo Ted(dy) and have Teddy and Cleo! Do it!

I also like Cora, Cara, Tara, Charis, Chloe, Zoe, Cass/Cassie, Callie, Lola, Iris, Fina (pronounced Feena), Lara...

BeetGo · 23/02/2019 02:19

Ari is DD's middle name. The way I've heard it Ah-Re sound is male and Arrey to rhyme with Harry with the H dropped is female.

Love Cara.

Susannach · 23/02/2019 02:53

I can’t believe how many people are saying go for it! You can’t have a Theo and a Cleo!!

Clea or Cora are good suggestions. Or how about Luna, Lyra, Vita, Calla, Romy, Zara, Zosia, Phoebe, Maeve/Maeva...?

BlueCookieMonster · 23/02/2019 02:57

My children’s names are very similar (quite by accident) but no one has noticed and no one has said anything.

SmallProblem123 · 23/02/2019 03:05

Omg dont. My husband has cousins who's names rhyme (think Ed and Fred) and we all think it's hilarious.
