To call my children names that rhyme?

Is it really that bad? For clarity - we don't want them to rhyme - it's just the name we like for our soon to be born daughter rhymes with that of our son.

I know it's annoying when people are cryptic on these threads so my son's name is Theo and we want to call our little girl Cleo. they have a Greek dad hence the names that work in Greek and English - and also we want short names as their surnames are very long! We don't do middle names.

So is it really awful - or should I not care what people might think and just call them what we want? Will it set us all up for a lifetime of confusion?!

If it is really that bad - any other name suggestions? I'm running out of ideas!

Could Theo become Theodore? And then you could have Cleo.

But don't ever tell him he had to change his name to accommodate his sister!

mkmo · 22/02/2019 19:47

i LOVE the names together Theo and Cleo. Its a bit of fun that they rhyme!

I would go for it! :D

Ali1cedowntherabbithole · 22/02/2019 19:48

Ha ha 45 I know a Mandy and Andy and a Karen and Darren.

I agree they are nice names individually. Could you say Theodore and Cleo when discussing both to get around the rhyming?

DD has rhyming boy twins in her class and it does sound a bit silly, though I suppose won’t matter so much as they go their separate ways.

cowcreamer · 22/02/2019 19:49

Thanks again everyone - I realise there are far more important things to worry about really.

It really wasn't this hard with Theo! We settled on it pretty quickly.

It's obviously a very lovely little problem to have - we never thought we would have one child let alone two.

Just don't say this is theo and cleo, break it up a bit and say this is theo and this is cleo, it doesn't matter anyway.

I believe Zoe is Greek for life if not already mentioned

PyongyangKipperbang · 22/02/2019 19:51

Remembered another one....

in the local paper boy twins were announced. Their names were Leroy and Elroy which got a lot of raised eyebrows!

DanielRicciardosSmile · 22/02/2019 19:51

Her peers probably wouldn't be, no (unless they grow into car experts/obsessives like my son, that is!) but their parents would probably think of it.

cowcreamer · 22/02/2019 19:52

Zoe is Greek too and not a million miles from Cleo

I believe Zoe is Greek for life if not already mentioned

Zoe was a top runner for ages - I just can't quite commit to it for some reason...

Does anyone subscribe to the wait til their born and see what they look like philosophy? I always thought that was a bit silly personally and that people grew into their names and not the other way around but maybe it's the only way to do it!

they’re both lovely names - cleo was on our shortlist for our little girl - but they do sound a little daft when said together. i know someone who has children called jamie and amy and oliver and olivia and it has gotten a snigger out of people when they find out. also know two called emma and dale who always had the emmerdale theme tune hummed to them. i’d definitely steer away from rhyming/matchy names.

Rtmhwales · 22/02/2019 19:55

The wait until they're born theory didn't work out practically for me. DS was still nameless 23 days later and I just randomly chose a name off my list. Wasn't even my favorite. He's grown into it and can't picture another name for him now.

cowcreamer · 22/02/2019 19:55

they're born (embarrassed face)

sunshineandshowers21 · 22/02/2019 19:55

i had a name picked out for my eldest but then when he was born he didn’t look like a finn so we had a nameless baby for two weeks until we finally found a name that ‘fit.’

Tavannach · 22/02/2019 19:56

If you like Cara and Lara what about Charis? It's Greek.

Whocansay · 22/02/2019 19:56

I thought you were going to say something like 'Wayne' and 'Jayne' or something!

I think your names are lovely and can't see the problem, tbh. They aren't twins, or even in the same year at school, so I would go with it if you like them.

Although, some lovely alternative suggestions have been mentioned, like Rhea or Clea. Your children, your choice.

KitKatCHA · 22/02/2019 19:57

Cora? I loved it but was too similar to my other DDs name.

cowcreamer · 22/02/2019 19:58

What about Greek names for boys, British for girls?

Yes we're not intransigent about the Greek thing tbh - it's just nice as their surname is very Greek (and it keeps the Greek relatives happy) but we won't think twice about a British name if we find the perfect one

NoArmaniNoPunani · 22/02/2019 20:01

Charis is beautiful

highheelsandbobblehats · 22/02/2019 20:02

I know a Millie and Billy sibling pair. Both are shortenings of their actual names so it wasn't deliberate. Mind you, I also know a William and Benjamin which made me chuckle when I realised they could be Bill and Ben. Also know a Matilda and Tabitha that go by Tilly and Tabby.
My boys have names of two well known characters of a long running children's programme. It was a concern when we were choosing DS2s name, but ultimately we went with it as we loved the name and it was the only one we could agree on. We got a fair few comments when he was born (22 month gap). Everyone thought they were hilarious and the first, but it settled down. They're 7 and 5 now and it's never mentioned.
I love Calliope (mentioned above), which can be shortened to Callie. Also a big fan of Clara.
Cleo is gorgeous. But if your gut isn't sure, then maybe it's not right.

PyongyangKipperbang · 22/02/2019 20:04

DD was Mia for the first night. We had picked her name in advance. She was born at 9ish, DH went home at midnight and the next day he came to pick us up and I said "Oh by the way, her name is now XX"

I had been looking at her in the night and decided she just didnt look like a Mia so unilaterally changed it. DH was ok about it, which is good because if he had done that to me I would have been fucking incandescent! I can only blame hormones and the rush of giving birth for my "Fuck you" attitude Blush

Ellie56 · 22/02/2019 20:05

My initial reaction was no, just no. But if you say the names together a few times they don't sound too bad together.

Are you planning a third child OP? Then you'd have a trio.Maybe called Theo, Cleo and Leo?

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 22/02/2019 20:06

I LOVE Kleio sooooo much. But i went to school with sisters called Ricki, Vicki and Nicki so I'm immune to rhyming names...

MaverickSnoopy · 22/02/2019 20:06

We waited until our 3 were born to name them. Mostly because we could never narrow our list of names down past 5 and so hoped that once they were born we'd have an epiphany and we did.

DumbledoresApprentice · 22/02/2019 20:07

What about Eleni? It’s Greek but also easy for English people to pronounce and spell. I’ve taught a few teenage Elenis and think it’s a really pretty name.
