To call my children names that rhyme?

cowcreamer · 22/02/2019 19:00

Is it really that bad? For clarity - we don't want them to rhyme - it's just the name we like for our soon to be born daughter rhymes with that of our son.

I know it's annoying when people are cryptic on these threads so my son's name is Theo and we want to call our little girl Cleo. they have a Greek dad hence the names that work in Greek and English - and also we want short names as their surnames are very long! We don't do middle names.

So is it really awful - or should I not care what people might think and just call them what we want? Will it set us all up for a lifetime of confusion?!

If it is really that bad - any other name suggestions? I'm running out of ideas!

My two have completely different sounding three letter names (one boy, one girl) but when they were about 4 and 1 I made up a rhyme with both their names in, it made them laugh and they’ve been known by the rhyming names ever since....who cares what anyone else thinks!!!!! And if anyone asks about my kids names I tell them the reason they’re 3 letters is cos in my day (yawn) you could only enter 3 letters if you got a high score on space invaders, at least they can put their full name 😂

mogtheexcellent · 22/02/2019 19:31

Theo and Theano?

Personally I like your name choices

thegreylady · 22/02/2019 19:32

Cassandra...Cassie?

MamaDane · 22/02/2019 19:33

I think you're over thinking it. I don't think people in real life will give it much thought other than "huh it rhymes" if you say the names together. Eventually they will grow up and become adults and I really don't think it will matter at all.

I think if they were twins and in the same class at school, then I would understand the concern.

Just to for it. It'll be fine Grin

Theo and Athena
Theo and Cali (Calliope)
Theo and Rhea
Theo and Lexi

This is truly excellent!

I do like short names - also less scope for unwanted nicknames. May is another name I like - also not Greek!

I'm definitely going to think about Clea

I think they are fine.

MamaDane · 22/02/2019 19:34

TyrannosaurusBex · 22/02/2019 19:34

My friend’s mum is called Cleon, pronounced Cleeone, love that name.

ParkaPerson · 22/02/2019 19:35

I grew up with a lovely Clea so am predisposed like that name. It's unusual but not verging on made-up territory.

Actually I think rhyming is ok. What's the age gap? My brother and I go by shorted first names (think Jill and Phil) but no one ever said anything about it. There is six years between us so we weren't at school or playdates together. Actually unless you have a pair close in age and are calling to them both a lot you won't have many occasions outside the house to shout "Cleo and Theo, get back here right now!"

GingerSwan · 22/02/2019 19:35

I would say go for it, but children can be cruel.

But then again my DC's have gender reversing names by accident... so my DS's nickname is female (name is unisex though) and my DD's name sounds could be male, i didn't think about it until recently when i took them to the doctors and she addressed the wrong child Blush

Totally agree with pp who said just spell Cleo differently so they don't match when written down, beautiful name OP!

wLuytgNx · 22/02/2019 19:35

What about the name being Cleo but you call her Clo as a nickname, "Theo & Clo" sound nice. Or just Chlo sort for Chloe.

RumpoleoftheBaileys · 22/02/2019 19:36

Don't give this too much headspace.

Beautiful names. If you like Cleo, go for it.

Twisique · 22/02/2019 19:39

I would go with Clio, which I always thought was the correct spelling anyway.

cowcreamer · 22/02/2019 19:39

This is what I was thinking - but to respond to another poster - they are only 19 months apart so pretty close so it might be a while before they are free of each other.

Maybe I am just overthinking it...

Cali is definitely one to ponder too - thanks!

I wouldn't do it, that said i know siblings called Sophia and Mia and I'd never thought about it until recently, though they have 3 other siblings so probably not as obvious that they rhyme.
I much prefer Clea to Cleo personally!

theliverpoolone · 22/02/2019 19:40

I agree that Chloe could be a nice alternative.

45andahalf · 22/02/2019 19:42

I’d go for Clea. I know a Holly and Olly, but they’re married! (And not siblings, just in case that wasn’t clear!)

DanielRicciardosSmile · 22/02/2019 19:43

I wouldn't go for Clio personally - you'll have people thinking you names her after a Renault (though I do know someone who named her daughter Megane now I think of it). Was going to suggest Clea also.

45andahalf · 22/02/2019 19:43

Or Chloe is good. Or has anyone suggested Calista?

DanielRicciardosSmile · 22/02/2019 19:44

*named, not names.

PyongyangKipperbang · 22/02/2019 19:45

I know someone who's kids have rhyming names. She did it because she thought it was cute, it makes me cringe every time I hear her say their names and the eldest has started complaining about it. I suspect it will be worse then they are both in full on teen mode, I can imagine them both starting to use their middle names as the eldest is already threatening to do.

cowcreamer · 22/02/2019 19:46

I wouldn't go for Clio personally - you'll have people thinking you names her after a Renault

This did also occur to me... But I thought her peers wouldn't be so familiar with that model...

Not too keen on Chloe for some reason - but maybe I'll try it out again

Zoe is Greek too and not a million miles from Cleo.

NCforthis2019 · 22/02/2019 19:46

Like laura, Sarah, Deborah? Sort of thing? It’s fine I’m sure!
