what is the cheekiest thing you have taken when moving house.

We are moving next week and we are planning to dig up a tree and take it with us, plus other stuff. Did say we would take one or two setimental plants...
What have you taken and what happened. Funny stories please.

A tree? That will be difficult to remove. Friends of ours moved to find all the light fittings removed. Their solicitors contacted the vendors solicitors who withheld the proceeds of the sale until the vendors paid for a qualified Electrian to replace all the light fittings.

We took a bay tree but I did dig it up and put it in a pot before the viewings started as generally have to leave garden as seen.
Once moved into house with no lightbulbs.

Our neighbours took all fitted carpets, lights, (not lamp shades the entire light) and most of the doors. The new owners where most baffled

Our vendor removed several mature plants without warning, really pissed me off. If it had been a tree and I had not been made aware I would have taken legal action.

Trees are v expensive. You’ve committed theft unless you exclude it from the sale.

I moved into my first flat years ago now and all the handles to the kitchen cupboards had gone - just left with holes where handles were!

Err, OP did tell the buyers that a couple of sentimental plants would be taken. Not sure why this is cheeky?

If I move house, I'd take a plant given to me by a late friend. Would obviously tell potential buyers.

I once rented a flat that had the most amazing full length mirror in the hallway.
This mirror was magical, it took about half a stone off (from the right places), added maybe an inch in height, without looking like it belonged in a fairground. Friends used to detour to mine on a night out, just to check themselves in my mirror before hitting the town (sometimes I wasn’t even going out with them)

When I moved out, I lingered long and hard but... I DIDNT TAKE IT. I could have said it had got broken and replaced it, but I didn’t.

I regret that decision often.

Lightbulbs....but only because it was dark when we were moving, the new property had none and it was too late to go buy some from anywhere

Not unreasonable. My dad has cultivated many acer trees from saplings to fully matured trees now. I think if anything happened and parents had to move house for some reason, he would try and dig up a few for sure. Would easily cost several hundred pounds to buy fully mature, plus he just loves them.

When we moved house the previous owners took all the doorknobs, light bulbs, loo roll holders and curtain rails.

I’ve not done anything like that myself though.

The chances are an established tree won’t survive uprooting and replanting OP so your ‘ cheekiness ‘ will be wasted effort.

My parents bought a house many years ago and after exchange of contracts were advised that the fitted carpets and bespoke curtains were not actually included in the purchase price (you wouldn’t get away with that now). They had stretched themselves to the limit buying the house and didn’t have the requisite few hundred pounds so had to decline the offer and expected to move into a curtainless, carpetless house. Which they did, only to find the carpets, underlay and curtains burning in a bonfire at the far end of the garden. Now that’s CF-ery.

The bit that goes on the end of the pully cord on the bathroom light and the hallway runners made from the same carpet as the stairs and landing.

Our buyers were dicks, and we're lucky we didn't take more.

In our previous house where our 3DC were little there was an enormous beautiful mature walnut tree which they used to climb and we used to sit under in the summer. When we were leaving that house 20 years ago my husband noticed a very small sapling, probably grown from a walnut buried & forgotten by one of the many squirrels in the garden. He dug it up and planted it in the garden of the house we live in now where it has grown into a large & beautiful walnut tree that feels "related" to the one we left! We often talk sentimentally of how we hope one day to see our grandchildren climbing this one, as our children climbed the other one

If I moved I would take just one plant which is an azalea that I brought 18 years ago just before I had my son, I put it in a pot but it outgrew the pot a few years ago and is now in the ground outside my front door, I’m lucky that my soil is acidic and always flowers in May when its his birthday, so very sentimental.
