To wonder why Sajid Jarvis was so quick to remove Shamima Begum’s British nationality

But has done nothing about removing Asma Assad’s? Asma Assad is a dual British-Syrian National, so why not deprive her (and her kids) of British nationality? I can’t quite believe that the government hasn’ Done this. Why on Earth not?

It doesn't appear that Syria has much appetite for prosecuting the wives of terrorists. Javid has done this to score a couple of cheap political points and temporarily take everyone's mind off what an utter disaster they're making of Brexit.

He's basically shouted "Oh look, a squirrel!" and sadly it's worked.

Moorfields · 22/02/2019 18:27

She can only have Bangladeshi citizenship via her parents & it was reported that her parents have a British passport. So although she may have Bengali ethnicity, she is a British citizen because she's a British passport holder. I may be wrong here so I'm happy to stand corrected. The only other citizenship she can apply for is a Dutch one via her husband. The Dutch have been very quiet about it so far. I don't know if they've stripped her husband of his citizenship. If they have, then Shamima and her husband are both in limbo.

The British government could prosecute Shamima for using a passport fraudulently. She used her sister's passport to leave the country when she was 15. Anyway, it's all a big mess and a perfect diversion from the mess that is Brexit for the government.

StealthPolarBear · 22/02/2019 18:31

Is her marriage legal

Debfronut · 22/02/2019 18:34

It is so she can sort out an appeal quickly. Then the hearing for that will look at the best interest of the child and she will be allowed home on that basis. Its to make him look like he has listened to the public but he knows she has a get out clause.

TalkinPeece · 22/02/2019 18:35

Moorfields
Her parents were both born in Bangladesh and as such their child has an automatic right to apply for Bangladeshi nationality until she is 21
however
she has never done so, her parents did not register her for it (or her siblings)
so they clearly wanted her to be British
and I'd be gobsmacked if Bangladesh does not have a "get out" for persons of unsound character who have another passport.

Sajid is a muppet

SwedishEdith · 22/02/2019 18:35

Isn't her husband dead? I also thought the Netherlands was one of the countries which doesn't allow dual citizenship - maybe that's changed? I think Germany only now allows it if you have another EU country citizenship.

C8H10N4O2 · 22/02/2019 18:44

I also thought the Netherlands was one of the countries which doesn't allow dual citizenship

You are correct. There are some special circumstances (based on the citizenship rules of the other country) but in general dual is not allowed.

Moorfields · 22/02/2019 18:46

TalkinPeece thanks for clearing this up as I was a bit confused. I knew that her parents were born in Bangladesh but thought as they had British passports, they'd given up their dual nationality status.

SwedishEdith I thought her husband had surrendered to the Syrian authorities although his fate is unclear.

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 22/02/2019 18:47

Distraction, timing, to get the Brexiters riled up about immigration again, to overcompensate for Tory party anti-Muslim issues in his own bid for leader? So many reasons. None to do with her being more of a threat than others in similar situations.

This.

flirtygirl · 22/02/2019 18:53

Unfair not to strip jihadi john but a girl who became a wife and has been pregnant 3 times in 4 years so has obviously spent the last 4 years on her back is stripped of her citizenship.

Just another example of the way the law treats women differeny and minority women get the worst.

Yes going to Syria is stupid but once a person has been basically brainwashed, it's understandable. She didn't fight or pick up a weapon, she was bride and they are used for cooking, cleaning and sex.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 22/02/2019 18:59

Could it be because she's shown no remorse or regret.

Nesssie · 22/02/2019 19:03

I believe the Husband was tried and sentenced to prison in his absence by the Dutch. So her new plan is to go to Holland and wait for him ‘if he still wants me’ (her words)

Marcipex · 22/02/2019 19:07

They say jihadi wives had powers to discipline local women, and there is general agreement that the British women were the most vicious.
We don't know what she's been doing, as she said herself, we can't prove anything.
She thinks the manchester bombing was justified though, so I want her as dad as possible from me.

Nesssie · 22/02/2019 19:08

Also as much as I dispise her, the interviews were extremely biased and taken out of context. When talking about the Manchester attack she said she didn’t know children died, and she didn’t outright say she thought it was justified retaliation, she said after seeing a lot of innocent Syrian women and children being killed in air strikes, and being repeatedly told it was justified, that’s what she was led to believe.
Naive and brainwashed definitely but I’m not sure she’s evil.

Marcipex · 22/02/2019 19:08

'As far as possible'

HoustonBess · 22/02/2019 19:19

He wants to be next Tory leader. He knows Brexit has made racism more acceptable and wants the masses to think he's on their side despite being Asian himself.

He knows he's applying the law unequally by picking Begum out for worse treatment than others, but he doesn't care. It's a win-win, either she's stripped of nationality (tabloids love it) or the courts overrule him (tabloids love it, get to dump on 'elitist' judges)

Nothing about it is trying to apply proper justice or respect the rule of law. It's a cynical ploy for public support that leaves an innocent British baby festering in a refugee camp in Syria, and probably wastes a lot of taxpayer money in defending a court appeal.

She's done horrible things, and had horrible things done to her. Bring her back and punish and rehabilitate her. Don't play stupid games like this, especially when a baby is involved.

MissEliza · 22/02/2019 19:21

Sajid is a muppet. He has been really disappointing.

TalkinPeece · 22/02/2019 19:21

Marcipex
She is a stupid nasty little girl
but that does not allow the UK Government to act in a stupid nasty little way
as otherwise our rule of law sinks to their level

Dungeondragon15 · 22/02/2019 19:27

I don't know why they haven't removed Asma Assad’s British Citizenship but people are talking as if Shamima Begum is the first ISIS member they have deprived of British Nationality which is not the case. If think they have removed it from about 100 others previously. It won't work in her case but I don't feel too sorry about the fact that she will probably have to wait a few months to get it back. A few months in a Kurdish Refugee camp doesn't seem too harsh considering that is probably all her "punishment" will be. I doubt they will be manage to prosecute her on return.

SwedishEdith · 22/02/2019 19:40

I thought her husband had surrendered to the Syrian authorities although his fate is unclear.

Ah, ok, didn't know - thanks.

Budsbegginingspringinsight · 22/02/2019 19:50

It's obvious this isn't clear cut situation and as pp mentioned we are not alone in denying citizenship to her. Many other countries are grappling with the same issues.
She's certainly not the first jihadis we have done this too either.

Really the international community needs too agree the best course of action for these utter uncivilised nasty nutters.

Budsbegginingspringinsight · 22/02/2019 19:51

Assads citeznship should be removed but maybe she's not begging too come back to UK?

Iflyaway · 22/02/2019 20:04

if she’s Bangladeshi (and possibly Dutch).

How can she "possibly be Dutch?" She's never been there, has no claim to citizenship at all. The same rules apply as in UK. EU anyone?

(i.e. married/official partnership - not even legally - you need a certain amount of income etc. blah blah....).

Bit hard for him to get together seeing as he's a prisoner (or dead).

Iflyaway · 22/02/2019 20:19

she can apply for is a Dutch one via her husband. The Dutch have been very quiet about it so far. I don't know if they've stripped her husband of his citizenship.

No. And No.

Her husband is not around so she cannot apply for one.

UN rules state that no-one can be stripped of their citizenship.

So the Home Secretary ain't even done his homework!!

Dungeondragon15 · 22/02/2019 20:27

So the Home Secretary ain't even done his homework!!

Don't be ridiculous. Do you seriously think that the home secretary hasn't "done his homework? He has been advised by lawyers that she arguably could have dual citizenship. If she does then he can remove her British citizenship, just as they have done for about 120 other Jihadists. The issue is whether she does have or could apply for Bangladesh. I'm very much doubt that it will work but couldn't care less if she has to spend a few months worrying about whether she will be able to come back.
