To not care about work?

I’ve had quite a few jobs and never found my niche. For the past few years I’ve had a variety of office roles.

My problem is, I just really don’t care about work! I turn up and do my allocated hours, I do what’s expected of me, no overtime. But I’ve never found a job I actually care about. They have always been “just” a job to pay the mortgage. I mostly get on okay at work. I generally get on fine with people, I’m content with getting a “Good” in appraisals.

I clock watch at work and get so bored! I’ve had so many bullshit jobs that don’t contribute anything. See: www.google.co.uk/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/books/2018/may/25/bullshit-jobs-a-theory-by-david-graeber-review

The only work related passion I have in my life is volunteering at a primary school. I really enjoy it, so much so that I’m thinking of becoming a teaching assistant and possibly doing a PGCE next year.

Does anybody feel the same way about working?

I'd give up my job if I won the lottery but I think I'd keep a foot in the door and stay in the field somehow. I do enjoy it and the effort I put in is generally reflected in the outcome - how well my students learn, and how satisfied I feel. I work for a great dept at a university and I do feel valued, but it can be stressful or boring. It's definitely not my dream job but ticks a lot of boxes.

My kids are still quite young, 7 and 5, and the oldest has ASD, so some days I feel like I wish I could just focus on the kids and not have to think about work at all. In reality though I'm a better parent for having a career for myself and I hope my daughters can see I value my job.

I couldn’t do a job that I didn’t care about.

Lucky if you can get one. I do a job that is mentally interesting, but I don't honestly care about it and some days I can feel my brain switching off as I go into the office. I'm too poor not to have to work for my living and boy do I wish I didn't have to.

Everyday I’m having to drag myself in. I wish I had got signed off this week too!

I basically just sit in my own office all day doing very little. I have two boring meetings today. Urgh I really can’t be bothered!

@PBo83

What do you mean not physically inconspicuous enough?!!!!!! I am also wondering!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I enjoy my job (bid writing) though if I won the lottery I would give it up and concentrate on fiction writing. I've also had jobs I hated and it fucked with my mental health to a scary degree.

We spend so much time at work that I would do everything in my power to be in a job I enjoyed. I think it's important.

I love my new one (AHP). Have had crappy jobs in past. I only do jobs that help people. I would struggle with a job that only makes money for people or sells stuff. I also notice a difference between how I was treated as a care assistant and how I am as a HCP. Much better conditions and flexibility etc.

Sometimes though I remember that before this way of life, we would have not much free time as would have to seek our own food, clothes, water etc. At least now we spend loads of time doing work but those things are handed on a plate...shops full of food, water from taps etc. So at least get evenings and weekends to do as we please with everything to hand.

However I do think people are getting fed up of the system and things are going to change. People are more u willing to do crappy low paid jobs. Jobs aren't paid enough especially hard manual ones.

I only went to school because I had to and felt the same about work. Did well in both but never liked it.
