To feel panic stricken about Brexit?

I actually feel sick at the thought that it is only 39 days to Brexit, with no deal in place and a cliff-edge exit looming fast, the EU refusing to budge on concessions (as well they might), the Irish border problem unresolved, tens of thousands signing up to Nigel Farage's Brexit party and the Tories and Labour in crisis?

How did something that started out as a row within a faction of the Tory party come to this, a constitutional crisis? It feels like Armageddon.

I am in an absolute panic about it all. I moved with out dc to France with exh, for his work 13 years ago, my dc were very young we had another born here, ex left I am here as single parent and well and truly fucked.

I own my house, we are fully integrated in our community, but dont meet the criteria required to stay, but I cant afford to return to the UK, I have nothing there, no place to live, I would't be able to work or claim benefits, would need to take the residency test, friends who returned have had to do this, its just so awful and frightening. Like many friends here we are stuck between a rock and a hard place, simply because we excercised our rights under EU legislation to live and work in Europe, we have been abandoned, there are over 5 million Brits abroad or EU citizens in the UK, many are in a similar precarious position.

Re the “why wouldn’t nhs contracts be honoured post brexit?” comment upthread, just because an EU national applies for settled status there is no guarantee they AND their families would get it. If nothing else the windrush debarcle proves that the government or at least immigration department can do their own thing.

There will be no shortages of anything that matters.

The maxim we ought to learn from is the one that led to the German Economic Miracle. The only ration card is the pound sterling.

TaimaandRanyasBestFriend · 18/02/2019 23:27

My MP was one of 83 MPs to have signed a letter to Theresa May last month urging her to rule out a no-deal Brexit.

How do they rule it out? Even if they agree a deal, Europe is under no obligation to accept it, and personally, if I were the EU, I'd tell the UK to go and fuck itself for being such a load of thick, arrogant, narrow-minded, backwards-thinking, xenophobic, racist fucks.

TaimaandRanyasBestFriend · 18/02/2019 23:32

I would't be able to work

Why wouldn't you be able to work if you return to the UK? I'd guess with your fluent French you'd at least be able to pick up some translating work, too.

Is that you Jacob?

I can't wait, I'm counting the days, then let the stinking EU pile implode .

Are you a Russian troll? Nobody real could be this utterly stupid in 2019. It might have been vaguely acceptable to think like that in 2016, but with the constant show of union from the EU 27? It was utter bullshit, Brexiteer nonsense was. Here's your domino effect.

DH is adamant that's it's never going to happen, that an extension will be granted and so on until it's cancelled. I hope so.

An ongoing extension isn't really possible. The EU Parliamentary elections are in May. The parliament has already been reorganised to account for the UK's exit. It's not really possible for the UK to remain in the EU after that point, unless it's a case of the UK actually just staying. An election (held simultaneously in 28 countries) which will yield a parliament that can sit only until the UK leaves, then becomes void and 27 countries all need to co-ordinate another election, just isn't going to happen. It's expensive and difficult and ignores the fact that the EU isn't some sort of mysterious overseer but is a union of 27 other countries who all have our own countries to run. 27 countries can't be putting their own business on hold indefinitely while one country prevaricates.

As it is the Ireland was due an election now (as a result of the C&S agreement the current government was formed under) but the minor coalition partner/main opposition party have chosen to wait until after Brexit in order to put country ahead of party. And Spain is having it's general election on April 28th. The issue of Gibraltar could make or break the election for the sitting government in Spain, so re-opening negotiations, or the granting of an extension just can't happen.

An indefinite series of extensions will cost the EU while creating instability that hurts as badly as you leaving will. The only two ways an extension will be granted are if there is a major change in the UK's position. 1. An extension to allow time for a referendum which will have a definitive outcome deal/no deal, stay/deal, stay/no deal or stay/deal/no deal. 2. An extension to allow time for the withdrawal agreement to come into effect, as you are already close to/past the time needed for it to be legal.

DippyAvocado ha ha I’ve actually spent time typing a long statement which I hoped would rip this stupid notion to ribbons but you managed it in one line so I don’t need to bore everyone. Thanks for saving my effort! 😂

Don't worry, it's going to be just like this (published before the referendum).

And if it isn't, it'll be those Remoaners fault.

TheElementsSong · 19/02/2019 10:10

I'd forgotten about that Kenn Grin - I think we should link that on every Brexit thread. In fact, I think we should link that in response to every post by a Leaver.

daisypond · 19/02/2019 10:10

I'd guess with your fluent French you'd at least be able to pick up some translating work, too. Translating is a skilled profession. Most will have a degree and a master's in translation, and it is a tough field to break into, especially in a very competitive language pair like French>English - you don't just "pick up some translating work" like that.

rosie39forever · 19/02/2019 10:54

Come on daisypond don't be a negative remoaner get out there and translate some stuff🤣
