To feel panic stricken about Brexit?

northernlights0710 · 18/02/2019 12:33

I actually feel sick at the thought that it is only 39 days to Brexit, with no deal in place and a cliff-edge exit looming fast, the EU refusing to budge on concessions (as well they might), the Irish border problem unresolved, tens of thousands signing up to Nigel Farage's Brexit party and the Tories and Labour in crisis?

How did something that started out as a row within a faction of the Tory party come to this, a constitutional crisis? It feels like Armageddon.

We were never in the Euro. The Eurozone is certainly under pressure. But the idea that we are well prepared to take a hit is just laughable.

Calledyoulastnightfromglasgow · 18/02/2019 19:22

I find the notion of people stockpiling loo roll hilarious

rosie39forever · 18/02/2019 19:36

No one has said leavers are scum! My parents voted leave and are definitely not scum, mislead and overly optimistic yes.

larrygrylls · 18/02/2019 19:37

Bellini,

So you were just making random noise...

We, as an independent country, do have more flexibility to respond to a crisis, as I asserted. I never claimed we were in the Eurozone.

We are not well prepared to take a hit but we can certainly survive it.

Snowmaggedon · 18/02/2019 19:37

Yes my Porsche is rammed with loo rolls I feel safer

rosie39forever · 18/02/2019 19:39

Calledyoulastnightfromglasgow, 90% of our paper products come from Sweden, no deal =no bogroll

CoolJule43 · 18/02/2019 19:41

You definitely abvu to be panic-stricken over this. That's rather a strong reaction.

A cliff-edge exit? Oh. for goodness sake.

I suggest, if that is your reaction, that you stop watching the news and reading papers/online. Don't put yourself through unnecessary drama.

bellinisurge · 18/02/2019 19:44

larrygrylls Don't remember "we will survive it" on the side of the bus.
Op, no need to panic. Get yourself a buffer of supplies for three days. Or more if you want/can. You are absolutely right to be angry because of this self inflicted shit show.

larrygrylls · 18/02/2019 19:48

Bellini,

This thread is not about ‘the bus’ but whether people should be panicking...

bellinisurge · 18/02/2019 19:59

And I have addressed the panicking. As well as the thin arguments that it's all going to be fine. Based on very little useful to the op.

ValleyoftheHorses · 18/02/2019 20:00

I’m really quite worried, mainly about food/ medicine/ water/ power/ fuel/ infrastructure breakdown.
I just want my life to stay the same as it is now!

SemperIdem · 18/02/2019 20:10

CoolJule funnily enough, a lot of the pro-Brexit people don’t follow current events because it’s “too stressful” Wink

Calledyoulastnightfromglasgow · 18/02/2019 20:15

If bog roll and veg is stuck at the borders on a cliff edge Brexit I will eat my bloody hat.

Various memoranda of understanding will be put in place.

Why are none of you this panicked by the fact your grandchildren will likely witness horrific effects of climate change?

CordeliaGoode · 18/02/2019 20:19

You’ll be fine. The media are quick to scaremonger and I’m saying this as a remainer.

Windowsareforcheaters · 18/02/2019 20:39

Are the media scaremongering about Nissan and Honda?

TakeMe2Insanity · 18/02/2019 20:51

I spent the morning in a body part specific emergency clinic, both the doctors who treated me were EU nationals who have been told their contracts may not be honoured due to brexit and their new immigration status. Now that worries me. We can’t just grow new highly skilled medical staff in a year.

Unescorted · 18/02/2019 20:52

An MoU takes a while to negotiate and generally have very little detail. They set out the direction of travel and not to screw over the other party. Not enough to trade on, and they are generally coming from a position of trust because they have no contractual teeth (because that would be a contract).

I am not convinced that Britain can count on that level of trust having said they are going to send warships to the South China Sea, undercut other trading nations and coming out of trade negotiations to brief the media on exactly the opposite to the agreed position. No nation in their right mind would sign a MoU with a party with such a position.

slipperywhensparticus · 18/02/2019 21:09

We were told that EU nationals here will be allowed to stay as will people living and working overseas why would there contract not be honoured

DangermousesSidekick · 18/02/2019 21:13

We, as an independent country, do have more flexibility to respond to a crisis, as I asserted. I never claimed we were in the Eurozone.

You wouldn't care to describe some of the steps you think we can flexibly take to respond to crisis would you? From where I'm sitting, the big one looks like martial law and an open totalitarianism. While flexibly permitting a substantial (minority) percentage of the population to die.

DGRossetti · 18/02/2019 21:13

We were told that EU nationals here will be allowed to stay as will people living and working overseas why would there contract not be honoured

We were told a lot of things ...

colouringinpro · 18/02/2019 21:22

Yanbu.

Bma also announced today no-deal Brexit woukd be a disaster for the NHS. Already chronically short-staffed and as another poster said, loosing EU nationals.

Getting supplies in and out will be a massive issue. The government haven't been practising queuing hundreds of trucks in Kent for the fun of it.

And yes, we should all be focussing on the fact that the planet is facing multiple environmental crises and that our window to do much about it in closing. But we're not. And Brexit is seriously not helping.

bellinisurge · 18/02/2019 21:27

Here's a thread I started recently. Don't panic. Take back control
"Paralysed by fear"with what to do about possible food shortages? Start here. Thread titled amended by OP's request http://www.mumsnet.com/Talk/eureferendumm2016/3493071-Paralysed-by-fearwith-what-to-do-about-possible-food-shortages-Start-here-Thread-titled-amended-by-OPs-request

rosie39forever · 18/02/2019 21:30

The government practiced queueing 83 lorries on the hard shoulder in Kent, the port actually receives over 8000 lorries per day so obviously they are well prepared 🙄

KennDodd · 18/02/2019 21:34

We, as an independent country, do have more flexibility to respond to a crisis

I would suggest that as the independent country we, are we respond to the current crisis by cancelling Brexit.

AndhowcouldIeverrefuse · 18/02/2019 22:30

SilverySurfer

I can't wait, I'm counting the days, then let the stinking EU pile implode

Have you started a cheery countdown thread yet? You know, like the ongoing Christmas ones? Smile
