AIBU to think that if our elected representatives can’t decide, the people should have the final say?

After all, that’s partially why we had the Referendum in the first place. At that point, relatively few people had feelings one way or the other about the EU. But we were asked. Now that there’s evidently no consensus in Parliament as to how we should leave the EU, shouldn’t it go back to the people again?

I've just donated, thanks OP. I voted remain but my parents voted leave and desperately want the chance to correct their error- they feel they were lied to by the big red bus...they were!

HeyCarrieAnneWhatsYourGame · 19/02/2019 06:37

YA definitely NBU. Just donated. Thanks OP.

Fundraising now over £200000, target has been lifted...

I'm so encouraged by the new Independent Group in Parliament, hope some Tories join today!

And now nearly £250000.

That's great, OP. A trip to London is expensive, hopefully this fundraiser will pay for a lot of buses...I know one bus that's probably available cheap right now but it would need a paint job first! 🤣

OhYouBadBadKitten · 21/02/2019 20:57

Buses going so far are listed on the sister thread:

If you live in Bristol/Bath, there is a TRAIN just for the event...

Let's all keep spreading the word about the March.
We have to stop this madness.

borntobequiet · 23/02/2019 17:39

Just under £280000 now. That’s pretty good in less than a week.
Three more first time marchers have told me they’re planning to go!

I'm afraid YABU. A "people's vote" is what landed us in this miserable shit storm in the first place. The British public can't even vote for the best act on the X Factor or Strictly and should never have been trusted with the future of the country in the first place. It's all just so very sad.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 23/02/2019 18:12

well a march for Revoke would be even better, but no one seems to want to really get behind that campaign.

borntobequiet · 23/02/2019 20:18

I agree that it’s not an ideal situation, and that the 2016 referendum shouldn’t have taken place. But it did. Unfortunately, our elected representatives don’t seem to be able to come to any useful conclusions, so the only option seems to be to put it back to the people, who will hopefully be better informed this time round.

People are too fucking stupid.

I hate to admit it, but sadly you have a point. If many voters voted in the AV referendum without understanding how AV works, how likely are they to understand all the complexities of leaving (or remaining) in the EU?

Better hope they never have a referendum on the death penalty, because there would be a landslide in favour.

I don’t think it would be a landslide, but I think you’re right that it would win. Why is this country so determined to go backwards?

Why is this country so determined to go backwards?

Because some people are fucking stupid.

People can be misled and make mistakes. People can change their minds. I don’t think it’s unreasonable to make this observation.

The mistake was made 50 years ago when we were hornswoggled into joining what became the effing EU. Those of us with sense are putting it right.

borntobequiet · 24/02/2019 21:23

Hornswoggled?
I don’t remember that. And I voted then.
