I don't know whether I should call 111

My husband suffers from diverticular, and since last night he has had a temperature, which seems high when I touch him (don't have a thermometer) paracetamol hasn't worked his had them 4hourly since last night. He has had black tarry diahorea which on googling sounds like some sort of bleeding.

He's not very steady on his feet and has been using me to support him to the loo.

Should I call 111 or wait to see if he gets better or worse?

Call 111 now.

ohfourfoxache · 14/02/2019 16:00

111 now

Havana7 · 14/02/2019 16:00

Yes call 111 x

SpottedTiger · 14/02/2019 16:00

I would call 111, they will either put your mind at rest or advise you on what to do either way you will feel better.

Is he on iron tablets? Those cause black poo too.

MaverickSnoopy · 14/02/2019 16:05

111 now.

JumpOrBePushed · 14/02/2019 16:11

Yes call 111

Onlyjoinedforthisthread · 14/02/2019 16:12

Could you call his gp practice as they'll have his notes available

Littleraindrop15 · 14/02/2019 16:13

Hi

No no iron tablets.. He just seems so confused when I'm talking to him calling 111

OP posts:
MuddyMoose · 14/02/2019 16:14

Yep definitely 111. Hope he's ok

paintinmyhairAgain · 14/02/2019 16:15

i'd call for advice a.s.a.p

keepingbees · 14/02/2019 16:15

Yes definitely, sounds like he's passing blood from high up in his digestive system. I have diverticula and that's not normal. Hope he's ok

JellycatElfie · 14/02/2019 16:15

Absolutely call 111 I imagine they’ll send an ambulance?

TokyoSushi · 14/02/2019 16:15

This is on the NHS website, I would call 111 or his GP

If your diverticula become infected and inflamed (diverticulitis), you may suddenly:

get constant, more severe tummy pain
have a high temperature of 38C or above
feel sick or vomit
feel generally tired and unwell
get blood in your poo or bleeding from your bottom (rectal bleeding)
When to get medical advice
Contact your GP as soon as possible if you have symptoms of diverticular disease or diverticulitis.

If you have already been diagnosed with diverticular disease, you usually don't need to contact your GP – the symptoms can be treated at home.

But if you have any bleeding or severe pain, seek immediate medical advice.

Contact your GP or, if this isn't possible, call NHS 111 or your local out-of-hours service.

Pythonesque · 14/02/2019 16:18

Actually with what you're describing I'd say take him to A&E or call an ambulance.

humblesims · 14/02/2019 16:20

agree with advice to ring 111. Also stop giving him paracetamol. Every four hours is too much.

Sallycinnamum · 14/02/2019 16:24

I don't want to frighten you but I have a family member with the same condition that led to peritonitis which is very dangerous.

I'd call an ambulance.

cindersrella · 14/02/2019 16:25

Yep, ASAP. Is your GP practise open?

Quartz2208 · 14/02/2019 16:27

actually high temp being unsteady on feet I would go to A&E.

It may even be 999 rather than 111

TheCreativeLife · 14/02/2019 16:28
  1. Don't wait
chunk14 · 14/02/2019 16:28

Take him to the hospital.

cjt110 · 14/02/2019 16:29

111 and be prepared that they might send an ambulance so get some bits and bobs together.

ThanksItHasPockets · 14/02/2019 16:29

A&E or ambulance, right now. I also don't want to scare you but when a family member with diverticular had similar symptoms he lost a lot of blood and needed emergency surgery and a spell in intensive care.

Springwalk · 14/02/2019 16:29

Take him to A&E if he is confused as well. 111 will take ages and come to the same conclusion.

Springwalk · 14/02/2019 16:29

You can get his stuff later

Buddyelf · 14/02/2019 16:30

I would head to A&E op. It’s likely 111 will recommend that anyway and it’s time wasted when he needs to be seen. Hope he’s ok!
