I don't know whether I should call 111

My husband suffers from diverticular, and since last night he has had a temperature, which seems high when I touch him (don't have a thermometer) paracetamol hasn't worked his had them 4hourly since last night. He has had black tarry diahorea which on googling sounds like some sort of bleeding.

He's not very steady on his feet and has been using me to support him to the loo.

Should I call 111 or wait to see if he gets better or worse?

He's where he needs to be. Let's hope the docs work their magic eh?!

Lozz22 · 14/02/2019 23:08

Forget 111 call 999 black tarry stools indicate internal bleeding from somewhere. Really don't want to scare you but my Dad died from internal bleeding

Justkeeprollingalong · 14/02/2019 23:26

Read at least some of the thread @Lozz22. They are already at the hospital.

Littleraindrop15 · 15/02/2019 02:29

Hi just a quick update

Temp is going back up, he's got iv fluids and antibiotics, still lots of diahorea and going to the toilet. He's had a ct scan which showed his having a full blown diverticulitis flare. The good news is he has no perforation, he is admitted but we are waiting for a bed at a medical unit as they don't quite know what to do with him yet and will need more testing.

Thank you all for your help and warm wishes x

Thanks for updating us all though don't feel you need to. I know what hospital is like, so it can be good to just go on MN to pass time.
It sounds like he is quite ill. You probably won't know anymore until the ward round in the morning. If they are arguing, it's probably because they don't know whether he is medical or surgical.

DameIfYouDo · 15/02/2019 02:38

I had this at my last admission. I actually felt like the kid that nobody wanted lol.

Littleraindrop15 · 15/02/2019 02:46

Oh my god!! Yes that is the two options they are weighing up.

However there are no beds at the medical at the moment so we are still at majors doing the wait.

Do you know what the difference is between the surgical and medical ward?

So good to hear he is in hospital and getting proper care. So scary. This happened to my mom right before she got diagnosed with diverculitis. She ended up at the hospital for almost a week I believe.

She has also had some minor issues since and has had to change her diet to keep an eye on things.

I hope he is on his way to good health soon. It can be scary and go sideways very quickly. 🇨🇦 Hugs to you.

DameIfYouDo · 15/02/2019 02:52

NO is the short answer. I asked my doctors the same question but it's literally a question of who you're being assigned to. Your treatment will be the same, but you'll be assigned under on team or the other. That's how they explained it to me.

From my experience having been under either team at separate times?
Surgical. Don't speak to you, will come around very early in morning.
Medical. They don't operate. But they do seem chattier.

It will be based on his bloods/scans etc.. If he needs to be operated on, he will go under the surgical team. If they don't think he needs to be operated on, he will go with the Medical team.

Anyway, he's in the right place, while they argue lol

DameIfYouDo · 15/02/2019 02:58

Medical team is good btw. It means they don't think surgery is necessary.

DameIfYouDo · 15/02/2019 03:01

Think of it like this.
Surgical team: Something needs to be operated on and we will remove it.

Medical team: There is something causing this pain, we're not sure yet, but we will hunt it down.

Surgical team: Most likely to operate
Medical team: Most likely to prescribe antibiotics.

Call 111 immediately. I don’t want to terrify you but when DS or DD are unwell I instinctively know they are about to come down with something like a unwanted ear infection or a UTI. This is serious. Don’t delay. My kids have had several unwanted ear infections, UTIs and episodes of sleep apnea now. Go straight to the hospital and ask them to admit him.

Littleraindrop15 · 15/02/2019 03:21

Ah thanks for the clarification, either way as long as he is being taken care of I am extremely happy and grateful.

I just can't wait for all this to be over I am beyond exhausted and being 31 weeks pregnant does not help lol

Are you home now?

Littleraindrop15 · 15/02/2019 03:32

Nope waiting still for him to be transferred to the medical ward.

DameIfYouDo · 15/02/2019 03:38

You're like me then. The walking wounded haha. Are ye still stuck in A&E?

MaybeitsMaybelline · 15/02/2019 03:49

Oh dear poor you. You must be exhausted. My dad has this and has had two hospital stays with it. He ended up once in medical and mother in oncology which was worrying, turned out they had nowhere else to put him. The treatment Was the same though so don’t worry if he’s in an unrelated ward!

MaybeitsMaybelline · 15/02/2019 03:49

*another not mother

Redglitter · 15/02/2019 03:55

spinabifidamom

RTFT 🙄

Hes been at hospital for hours now. The OP has posted several updates

Littleraindrop15 · 15/02/2019 03:56

I just feel like I can't leave him until his been checked in to the medical ward.. Apparently we are on the top of the list now so hopefully It will be in the next hour and then I will go home and lay down my back is absolutely killing me!

lilyblue5 · 15/02/2019 04:12

OP bless you, what a night. I hope he gets onto a ward soon and you get home for some rest (if you can rest!) hoping all is ok with your husband x x

user1474894224 · 15/02/2019 05:01

@littleraindrop you absolutely can leave him. Look after yourself too. You have done all the right things now go home and sleep.

thedogattacksthetissuebox · 15/02/2019 05:02

Don't be afraid to push op if you feel he's not getting better. Perforation of the bowels is not easily diagnosed via scan.

Littleraindrop15 · 15/02/2019 05:16

I've booked a taxi I can't wait around any longer my back and legs are aching and I don't think anything else is going to be done until he is moved to the medical ward and assessed there which could be hours still considering we've been waiting to be moved since 11 or 12.

I'm going to try and squeeze a couple of hours sleep before I go back. It's so annoying that I'm suffering with restless legs once I get in I will have to get in the bath otherwise I won't actually be able to sleep.

He is comfortable and snoring away now and they are doing obs quite regularly so i know his in good hands but doesn't help wanting to be by his side 'just in case' he needs me

Oh bless you. I’ve just seen this thread. Yes,you definitely need to look after yourself and your baby too. Your dh will understand by the sound of it. It sounds as if he doesn’t like fuss. I’m glad he’s being cared for now.
