She married a bloke who became president...so why is she so revered, because she married well? I just don't get it.

I despair at how proud some people are of their ignorance

Absolutely this.

How has stupidity become such a badge of honour?!

acatcalledjohn · 12/02/2019 08:19

To assume makes an ass of u and me...

I haven't read the book but anyone who uses a position of power and fame to make positive changes in the world deserves their reputation.

Please, start a thread on those airheads from TOWIE/Geordie Shore/Real Housewives/Kardashian, whose plastic and vacuous existence seem to be aspirational to a lot of girls in their teens and early twenties.

So being the presidents wife helped her help others. Don't shit on that when the balance of female role models is heavily in favour of the aforementioned bad ones.

wellhellothereall · 12/02/2019 08:19

Choc too many to list everyone from Sheryl Sandburg to Serena Williams from Anna Wintour to Jacinda Arden all amazing women who have made their own way to the.i will read the book though perhaps it will enlighten me

*president's

How has stupidity become such a badge of honour?!

Scary, isn't it. Idiocracy is becoming reality.

BelindasRedPlasticHandcuffs · 12/02/2019 08:22

wanted to read about Obama’s life as President and her time as First Lady, not the biography as to how they got there!

Isn't the book called 'Becoming'? Confused

At4oclockthenormalworld · 12/02/2019 08:22

All great ..but she wouldn't be writing a book if her husband hadn't become president

\\\

Katie Price has written several. I know who I'd rather read.

At4oclockthenormalworld · 12/02/2019 08:23

I don't necessarily think your racist OP just not very nice

FamilyOfAliens · 12/02/2019 08:27

think there are stronger role models for girls than someone who married a president.

She didn’t marry a president. How many times does it have to be said before you understand it?

Ghanagirl · 12/02/2019 08:28

@wellhellothereall
Maybe you should’ve read the book before starting this dubious thread.
”better to keep quiet and let people think your stupid than to open your mouth and remove all doubt”
Something for you to think about OP
Now run along dear.

stayathomegardener · 12/02/2019 08:31

I firmly believe that Barack would not have become president had he not met Michelle.

Amazing woman, great book.

Shame she has stated she herself wouldn't run for the position. I didn't know that.

derxa · 12/02/2019 08:32

Reading with interest

SoupDragon · 12/02/2019 08:33

all amazing women who have made their own way

Michelle Obama did make her own way. Her husband happened to become president.

Serena Williams just happened to be good at whacking a tennis ball with a racket if you want to reduce her to one thing.

SileneOliveira · 12/02/2019 08:36

Because she's smart, switched-on, fights for the rights of women and girls and is a superb role model - she is not from an affluent background.

And she is a huge contrast to the current first lady.

Pk37 · 12/02/2019 08:36

Dense and proud .. what a massive achievement for a Tuesday morning .
Go you!

Sinead100 · 12/02/2019 08:36

Bangs head on wall and leaves thread

winsinbin · 12/02/2019 08:41

OP - are you saying that if a woman marries a successful man she can’t be a successful woman in her own right? That because her husband is of interest she must be subservient and keep her educated and well informed opinions to herself? Maybe retreat to the kitchen?

As the unknown wife of a successful man, I beg to differ.

JacquesHammer · 12/02/2019 08:42

all amazing women who have made their own way

And Michelle Obama is excluded from this because....? She literally made her own way, her husband THEN happened to become President.

arsefeatures · 12/02/2019 08:44

If you don't see what all the fuss is about you must be a racist .. Got it.

theyellowjumper · 12/02/2019 08:44

MO seems like such an amazing, positive, intelligent, compassionate, hard working, inspirational person, which is admirable in itself, even if she hadn't also had to struggle against racism and disadvantage. Isn't it obvious why that's a 'big deal' and shouldn't we all be applauding her achievements?

I haven't read her book yet, but love it that my teenage dd has asked for the book for her birthday and says that other girls she knows have read it. DD wastes spends so much time on social media or watching mindless crap like Love Island and the Kardashians, and it's so refreshing that someone who is such a positive role model seems to have such a wide appeal.

TheRiverIsAComfort · 12/02/2019 08:45

I've read her book and I'm not crazy about her or it..

However, it is crazy to suggest that because one doesn't like a black person, one is therefore racist because, if so, that is a dangerous route to follow with a natural progression that will lift a whole body of people above criticism simply because of their colour!

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 12/02/2019 08:46

By god Op you’re an embarrassment.
NC quick fgs.

Lweji · 12/02/2019 08:46

She didn't marry a President.

A President's spouse can be very different when at the WH. See how nothing Melania has done.
Then you have Michelle.

Yes, she's a life, like so many women's, that is a wonderful example to all but it's not in the public eye.
Has Serena a better role model because her career has been in public? I don't think so.
It just happened that Michelle came to our attention despite her not really wanting to be in the public eye or to hold public office.

She's not admired because of who she married, but we can thank her husband for bringing women like her to public attention.

kaytee87 · 12/02/2019 08:47

guess my point is that there are many inspirational women who get to the top on their own merits yet don't get this kind of revere.

Are you being deliberately thick?

arsefeatures · 12/02/2019 08:52

Accusations of racism and being thick aside.

Would we would ever have heard of her if she hadn't chanced to marry a future US President though ? Isn't that the OP's point ?
