She married a bloke who became president...so why is she so revered, because she married well? I just don't get it.

Filth - asking a question about Michelle Obama makes me racist? Are you on something?

I think she is a very inspirational person. She's well-educated and successful in her own right, but she used her position as First Lady to highlight issues that were important to her. She endured a lot of abuse during that time, but has always remained classy and dignified.

I think some first ladies achieve more than others during their time in the WH. Melania hasn't achieved much at all. Her main issue is cyber bullying, which is laughable as her husband is a huge cyber bully and she mostly only seems to be concerned with cyber bullying aimed at herself. Absolutely no thought or awareness of issues that are ongoing in the US right now.

Theknacktoflying · 12/02/2019 07:29

Not finding someone’s achievements worrhy of praise is one thing ...

As FLOTUS she actually performed her role really well and just because you don’t like her don’t be dismissive of her.

I think a lot of people would say that it was the other way around OP....that Barack married well!

Ghanagirl · 12/02/2019 07:33

Not a strange question at all. I do enjoy these threads, allows me to see who is racist on the site.
This!

Tinkobell · 12/02/2019 07:34

She'd be an amazing presidential candidate one day.

mimibunz · 12/02/2019 07:35

Just a few things springs to mind and that’s that she uses her platform and considerable influence to raise people up, to visit girls who desperately need a positive female role model, to be a positive force for change in the world. Michelle shows up. I love her.

Unfinishedkitchen · 12/02/2019 07:36

If you read her book you can see she could have also been president, she was that driven and smart. She gave up high powered jobs to do community outreach work for far less money despite having student debts to pay off. She is highly principled.

EspressoX10 · 12/02/2019 07:36

You live in a country obsessed with reality TV and Katie Prices and it irks you that people admire Michelle Obama?

Tinkobell · 12/02/2019 07:36

When she speaks, the hairs still stand up on the back of my neck - I love her unshaking conviction, she never ever wavers and I love that.

Grumbling · 12/02/2019 07:37

Filthyforfirth why does this thread allow you to see who is racist? Genuine question.

The OP has been ignorant but hasn’t brought race into it. In fact I think you are the only person who has brought race into it. Michelle Obama is an extraordinary woman, not knowing that doesn’t make you a racist, just ignorant!

thewinkingprawn · 12/02/2019 07:38

You are absolutely right on the book front - she will have got a book deal because having been First Lady means it will sell copies. However she has done a huge amount with her life that is worthy of writing about and is hugely impressive. Unfortunately in the world of publishing these days you need a ‘platform’ before they will publish you but that does not detract from anything she has done. Whichever PP said ‘obsession with her’ isn’t correct at all - it is fine to be impressed by someone’s achievements. The OP with all due respect clearly cannot be bothered to read up on her or has a VERY high benchmark for impressive achievements. We all know it ends up making you look a bit dim but then it’s the culture of cool these days to show stupidity - people think that is clever and funny. Love island, big brother etc etc.

thewinkingprawn · 12/02/2019 07:38

Agree not racist, just ignorant though

redandyellowandpinkandgreen99 · 12/02/2019 07:38

She may BE president one day. That will blow the minds of the OP, and the ONE poster supporting her LOL Grin (The one who posted at 7.30am.)

ImBattlingOn · 12/02/2019 07:40

I was so disappointed with her book. Only the last quarter of it talked about their time in office, and even that focussed on the first term with just a few pages on the second term.

I wanted to read about Obama’s life as President and her time as First Lady, not the biography as to how they got there!

CuriousaboutSamphire · 12/02/2019 07:41

I don't get the Michelle Obama thing either!

But I do get that she has always ben an inspirational woman who has worked hard at raising many issues that effect women and girls.

I get that she used her position as FLOTUS to bring these issues to a greater audience, gaining additional support.

I get that she is an inspirational black woman and would have been whomever she married.

I don't get the need to post somethign as clueless as the OP. Revealing that level of ignorance is just weird!

Grumbling · 12/02/2019 07:42

Sadly she has said she won’t stand for office. It’s a shame because she could be the salve on the gaping wound Trump is creating.

Curlyshabtree · 12/02/2019 07:42

Apart from all of her achievements I think it is her natural grace and dignity which endear her to so many. I think she’s awesome.

Linguaphile · 12/02/2019 07:43

She would be a remarkable woman even without the FLOTUS credential. Have you read her book? The fact you 'don't get it' suggests you don't know much about her.

Ohnonotuagain · 12/02/2019 07:45

Before assuming ANYONE is just someone's wife how about you make the effort to learn about them rather than assume or imply they're not all that.

grumiosmum · 12/02/2019 07:45

Yes, she has got a book deal because of the high public profile that being First Lady gave her.

But she's an amazing, inspiring, hard-working and super-intelligent person in her own right, who has created her own opportunities in life and used them to make a big difference to the lives of others.

Read her book, OP. It's one of the best books I've read in years. And it gives a genuine insight into the challenges of living in the White House, as well as the journey she and Barack went on to get there.

I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt and say you didn't post out of racism, but you do seem to be one of those women who likes to bring others down.

Tinkobell · 12/02/2019 07:45

I think she's a true global leader in the making....but I just hope she steps up and does it. It would be a huge shame for the world if she didn't. I see the fact that she's black and female as bonuses but it's her deep conviction and sense of personal presence that set her apart.

Theknacktoflying · 12/02/2019 07:45

But there always seems to be ‘ignorance’ and ‘misunderstanding’ surrounding the achievements about successful women of colour ... it is just very easy to make the racism leap ...

Somehow - looking at the top selling books - why isn’t anyone else (male or gemale) dismissed by the OP as purely there because of who she married or position rather than by merit?
