She married a bloke who became president...so why is she so revered, because she married well? I just don't get it.

Jaques that's the whole point of this thread - it's not just praise it's extreme. Praise I get - it's the levels of adulation that don't make sense because even if as PP said she was a successful woman in her own right, in her own right she didn't achieve anymore than many many other women and less than many more yet she is almost idolised in a way that most if not all of those are not

@arsefeatures
I love your name it seems to suit you.
So Trump and his low grade wife are better role models?
Please explain this?

JacquesHammer · 12/02/2019 19:21

it's the levels of adulation that don't make sense

Ah, so there’s a finite limit on the number of people who can find any one person inspiring before it becomes unacceptable?

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 12/02/2019 19:22

Have those of you who "don't get" MO read her book?

Ghanagirl · 12/02/2019 19:26

@Downtroddenhousingass
Positive racism???
No such thing love!
Let me spell it slowly for the stupid people.
Racism and sexism still exists which is why black women such as Serena Williams, Meghan Markle and the person who white racists really fear Mrs Obama are subjected to vitriol.
I’ve come to realise that even so called “feminists” are happy to support white men who “self Id” but when it comes to well educated black women no support!!
@MNHQ
Looking at you also!!

Sheelala · 12/02/2019 19:30

Oh come off it Jacques !! It's a bit more than people just saying they find her "inspiring".

Ghanagirl · 12/02/2019 19:33

@Sheelala
Melania is attractive is that the most important thing for First Lady?
I’m incredibly beautiful as is my daughter but I don’t that’s the sum of our worth!
Plus if I’m coming down to your level Trumps wife is...
Okay I just can’t be such a bitter person so won’t go there

Helmetbymidnight · 12/02/2019 19:33

who are some people you admire, op?

wellhellothereall · 12/02/2019 19:36

Read the thread Helmet. Lot and lots of people Men, women, black, white, singers, athletes, actors, politicians, business leaders ... but no one who idolised as much as MO!

JacquesHammer · 12/02/2019 19:39

It's a bit more than people just saying they find her "inspiring”

As I said very clearly not in my experience.

JacquesHammer · 12/02/2019 19:40

Lot and lots of people Men, women, black, white, singers, athletes, actors, politicians, business leaders ... but no one who idolised as much as MO!

Christ I can think of countless people who are the recipient of much more “gushing” and are far less worthy!

wellhellothereall · 12/02/2019 19:45

Jaques if there was no gushing there would have been no question to ask

OP posts:
JacquesHammer · 12/02/2019 19:48

if there was no gushing there would have been no question to ask

Can only assume your definition is very different to mine to account for such different experiences.

Helmetbymidnight · 12/02/2019 19:53

i couldnt be arsed to read all a thread entitled 'to not get the big deal about mo' - ive read it now, unfortunately.

im sure youve achieved masses more than her Grin

interestingly, on another thread, posters are saying they and their friends have never heard of the kkk. i think its possible that there are many people here who dont have the faintest idea about race in america.

Stupomax · 12/02/2019 19:54

Stupo I don't know I guess all I can wish for is that one day I am as utterly amazing as you clearly are

It's a good book but it's not that good. But read it anyway.

Sheelala · 12/02/2019 20:07

What would count as gushing if not knocking it out the park in all regards ? Personality ? Amazing. Intelligence ? Incredible. Attractiveness ? Absolutely beautiful.

pallisers · 12/02/2019 20:07

even if as PP said she was a successful woman in her own right, in her own right she didn't achieve anymore than many many other women and less than many more yet she is almost idolised in a way that most if not all of those are not

Do you have any idea how few african american girls from her socio-economic group - or indeed at all - were admitted to an ivy league college back then? Princeton's current (2018) data is 9% african american - can you imagine what it was in 1981 when she went? Princeton admitted its first female undergraduate in 1970 - 11 years before she entered. She did not just do what many women have done. She is an outlier by any standards. If you think that this is just like samantha cameron or Cherie Blair having a career then you have no ability to contextualise.

She was also subject to attacks no first lady has ever had to endure- she was a terrorist, she was a traitor, she was an ape, she was a man. She had to see her husband's nationality questioned. She handled all of this with extreme grace and took on the unpaid role of flotus. She must have spent the entire of that 8 years dreading an assassin's bullet and fearing for her children but she came across not as complaining or defensive but intelligent and engaged.

you don't have to like her. But of all people to wonder about what the big deal is???

wellhellothereall · 12/02/2019 20:15

Helmet I have achieved a lot in my own way. I'm not married to a president though so you will never know

OP posts:
Helmetbymidnight · 12/02/2019 20:16

thats great, what kind of achievements?

At4oclockthenormalworld · 12/02/2019 20:19

Chip on shoulder, OP?

DonaldTwain · 12/02/2019 20:23

I understand what you are saying op but what would you have had her do? She had her life, she was successful, she had to subsume her own position in her husbands because that’s what the role of FLOTUS requires. I loathe the whole institution, it’s deeply sexist, but within its constraints she made an excellent and very graceful job of it. The dignity with which she behaved towards the trumps after their vileness alone commands my respect.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 12/02/2019 20:25

What’s the real beef behind this OP?

Dinsey70 · 12/02/2019 20:27

^^

DonaldTwain · 12/02/2019 20:31

She’s an example of grace, dignity and restraint in public life. God knows we could use a few more of those. Especially in the US.

wellhellothereall · 12/02/2019 20:32

Helmet - enough to give me a happy and fulfilled life thank you for caring
