To be angry that parents won't allow their children to go on school visit to local mosque?

DS2 is going on a school trip to the local mosque. However, the school nearly cancelled it because so many parents have refused to let their children go. I have only spoken to one parent who won't allow her child to go but she said "I'm not racist but...why should they visit a mosque when we daren't get a plane or go to a shopping centre because of that lot". Not racist .

i work in the public sectar dealing with all races, i have no problem with anyone. i find that the muslims i have dealt with are very rude and ignorant they demand everything, they burp and fart in public plaes and some even sit picking their toes.

i just find their whole attitude way out of order, like i say i deal with all kinds of people and have no problem with anyone else.

i also suppose all the terrorist attacks haven't helped my opinion of them.

GogoTheSmall · 12/07/2007 17:22

hippychick - "i have no problem with anyone" - uh, apart from Muslims

Let's go painting with brooooaaad brushes shall we... ?

Can I just say I find YOUR whole attitude way out of order

motherinferior · 12/07/2007 17:46

Hippychick dearest, WTF are you on????

My children haven't been to a mosque, which is a pity. (We do, however - and yes I know I've said this before - have the Children's Tales from the Quran their Muslim paternal grandfather wrote in prison.)

fuzzywuzzy · 12/07/2007 17:50

Generally I have a come back to most insults aimed at muslims (a lifetimes practice).

However I have no rejoinder to the 'burp and art in public and pick their toes....' seriously you want to travel into london liverpool street station from shenfield on the one train, you'll get to see a lot worse, and I'd wager the perpetrators aren't muslim.

Also very curious, how do these muslims set about picking their toes, do they wear specially adapted shoes???

meandmyflyingmachine · 12/07/2007 17:54

You work in the public sector?

Hells bells.

Blu · 12/07/2007 17:58

And the reason you didn't particpate in a Diwali day was what?

GreengottsTheGoblinBank · 12/07/2007 18:01

Diwali is a Hindu festival

KTNoo · 12/07/2007 19:29

Haven't had time to read all of this (but have read most). Th attitude of the parent quoted in the OP is of course horribly ignorant although I would say not at all surprising.

As a Christian, I would have no problem with my children visiting a mosque. I strongly believe that when they are young 99% of their religious influence comes from home.

We are about to move to a muslim country so these things are in my mind a lot right now. I don't know whether we'll be able to attend church there. I also do not want them to do Islamic studies at the school there (I don't mean just learning about the faith - I mean what all muslims have to do). An interesting time is ahead - I wonder if this thread will still be going?!

hippychick1971 · 12/07/2007 19:36

KTNoo

no you wont be allowed to go into a church where ever you are going, its only britain who have mosques and temples and signs in every different language. you will have to live the way they live so god help you.

and as for diwali hindu, muslim whatever i am not interested in learning about their beliefs or religion and you can call me ignorant i dont really care they should all learn our ways if they live here

end of.

the majority of people agree with me just to scared to say as it is politically incorrect

meandmyflyingmachine · 12/07/2007 19:37

You are ignorant.

hippychick1971 · 12/07/2007 19:38

good i would rather be ignorant than get involved with and of them

meandmyflyingmachine · 12/07/2007 19:38

End of.

hippychick1971 · 12/07/2007 19:39

ditto

aloha · 12/07/2007 19:41

yes, ignorant. And you say you are paid out of the public purse to work with people from all backgrounds? I find that pretty shocking tbh.

hippychick1971 · 12/07/2007 19:44

so, i do my job well my beliefs do not affect my work and i smile through gritted teeth at them.

tell me why i should feel any different about them? well?

meandmyflyingmachine · 12/07/2007 19:44

Yes, surely you have to 'get involved' with them?

How do you ensure your racism doesn't affect your work?

aloha · 12/07/2007 19:44

because if you were a decent human being you would judge people as individuals instead of clinging to your revolting prejudices.

meandmyflyingmachine · 12/07/2007 19:45

Right. Smile through gritten teeth. OK.

Is this a wind up?

hippychick1971 · 12/07/2007 19:45

very easily i know how to do my job i have been doing it long enough i have never had eny complaints i am always professional.

it can be done.

aloha · 12/07/2007 19:47

Well, you'd better make sure that none of your bosses realise what a racist you are, otherwise you'd be out on your ear.

hippychick1971 · 12/07/2007 19:49

i am not worried half of them are worse than me.

my don't you all get worked up over things, one persons opinion.

how do you think all the famlies of the victims killed by these people feel.

meandmyflyingmachine · 12/07/2007 19:50

Which people? The Hindus/Muslims whatever?

aloha · 12/07/2007 19:50

"These people"? You mean everyone with a different coloured skin to you.
I find you utterly repulsive. I sincerely hope you lose your job. You are not fit to hold it.

Kewcumber · 12/07/2007 19:51

KTNoo - it depeds which moslem country you are going to. I sent 3 months in Kazakhstan and it was easy to find churches of all denominations in most large towns though synagogues probably only in the very large cities. They are extremely proud of their tolerance towards other races and religions and in fact have a public holiday celebrting the diversity of cutures in the country. We could learn a thing or two.

And meandmyflyingmachine, of course its a wind up - unless hippychick is Alf Garnett in thinly veiled disguise. Sorry hippy didn't mean to offend you with refernces to veils

KTNoo · 12/07/2007 19:51

(rather hesitantly enters "discussion")

No wanting to kill the debate, but apparently there is a Christian minority where we're going, although not sure what that means in reality. I don't like the phrase "live like them" though - what's that supposed to mean?
