To be angry that parents won't allow their children to go on school visit to local mosque?

DS2 is going on a school trip to the local mosque. However, the school nearly cancelled it because so many parents have refused to let their children go. I have only spoken to one parent who won't allow her child to go but she said "I'm not racist but...why should they visit a mosque when we daren't get a plane or go to a shopping centre because of that lot". Not racist .

Well, I think he started his own denom. not sure about that

bustles off to check

SueBaroo · 05/07/2007 18:17

hmm, moderator of the Free Presbyterian Church, he is. Can't see more than that atm.

duchesse · 05/07/2007 18:44

Now how did I just mis-read that as "he started his own demon"?

SueBaroo · 05/07/2007 18:52

twas me using silly abbreviations. Sorry about that. i meant denomination

duchesse · 05/07/2007 18:54

It was more fun though, SueW.

SueBaroo · 05/07/2007 19:05

I've had too much o' the fear o' God put in me by his sermons to suggest that

dinny · 05/07/2007 19:22

Aloha, as usual, is speaking sense.

Can't believe the way this thread has taken off. The power of MN.

Sorry, meant SueBaroo (fun moniker btw)

harpsichordcuddler · 06/07/2007 14:12

yes Ian Paisley is a reverend in the same way as I am the ArchBishop of the Church of Bagpuss. which I have just made up.

SueBaroo · 06/07/2007 15:24

How does that work then? He just woke up one morning and decided he preferred Reverend to Mister? I mean he's in a non-conformist church tradition, so I wouldn't have expected him to have been ordained a vicar or nowt...

Mirage · 06/07/2007 19:47

A couple of very nice Jehovahs Witnesses tried to convert me today,on my way through the village.Unfortunately for them,we only have a population of 200 & most of them were in church for a wedding at the time,so their doorknocking would have been in vain.

bookwormmum · 06/07/2007 19:50

Oh dear. I had a very nice young Jehovah Witness (just the one, which I thought was unusual) give me a leaflet the other day. It went in my recycling box .

Mirage · 06/07/2007 20:06

I daren't do that bookwormmum,as the recycling box was at the end of the drive, ready for collection & as they followed me up the street, they would have seen me 'recycle' it.

I can't beieve I felt guilty about offending someone who accosted me in the street!

Kewcumber · 06/07/2007 20:07

Am I the only pathetic wimp who takes the Watchtower (?) from the JW's and smiles nicely at them because I feel sorry for them? I'm a bleedin' atheistic I should be trying to convert them!

SueBaroo · 06/07/2007 20:11

Nah, Kewcumber, I do too. Although I have occasionally been tempted to open the door with a big kitchen knife and ask them to wait five minutes until we're finished with the virgin

Kewcumber · 06/07/2007 20:15

my "local" JW is a very old wizened lady - I'd be worried about her having a heart attack. they are so very nice I just can't bring myself to say no to them. [soft git emoticon]

SueBaroo · 06/07/2007 20:22

yes, my regular visitor is a lovely lady who has kids with tourettes, and adhd. She has such a lot on her plate I couldn't bring myself to be rude to her, and she's harmless anyway. >

meandmyflyingmachine · 06/07/2007 20:26

I always take it politely. Why not?

And then I put it in the recycling.

bookwormmum · 06/07/2007 20:33

It's quite easy to poke fun at JW's beliefs in private but they are relatively easy to say thanks but no thanks to so I could never be rude to one. I think it's part of their proselyting (is that the right word?) that they don't lecture when they do their rounds .

Elasticwoman · 06/07/2007 20:56

proselytising: from proselyte, ie some one who took on the Jewish religion in biblical times who was not born a Jew.

Strange really because Judaism seems the least evangelical faith I can think of.

DominiConnor · 08/07/2007 09:59

Although Judaism does not itself seek converts, I seem to see that energy channelled into convincing people of other ideas.
My own near atheism is essentially Jewish in nature, since most of the ideas I have on that area are from Jewish authors.

hippychick1971 · 12/07/2007 16:34

after reading this i must admit i wouldnt let my dd go to a mosque. they have divali day at school and myself and a number of other parents didnt participate. i don't see why my child should be part of this. i would have no problem in her visiting any other holy building but as far as muslims are concerned no way.

sorry if it offends people but everyone has a right to their opinion, and a lot of people probably feel the same as me but wont say

LowFatMilkshake · 12/07/2007 16:43

hippychick - I respect your opinion, but would ask you how you expect your children to show tolerance and understanding of other faiths if they never learn about them.

Why do you have a problem with Muslims in particular? - I am interested genuinley and have no wish to provoke an angry reaction.
