To ration milk or not to ration milk

babycatcher411 · 06/02/2019 20:41

That is the question!

Seeking advice here, as much as whether IABU.

Today at the dinner table it came to head that DP thinks DS drinks way too much milk. He thinks it’s unreasonable and isn’t a cost we should accommodate. He thinks I need to make DS drink something else.

This has mainly come up in discussion because the last 2 food shop periods (we do a big shop every 2 weeks) I’ve had to do a couple of topups of milk mid way.

Usually we buy 3 4pinters, for 2 adults and 1 child (11). Mostly this lasts almost the 2 weeks, sometimes I will buy an extra 4pinter towards the end.

I did point out that I have recently been drinking more milk, because of heartburn (36/40 pregnant) and have started having cereal at breakfast so we are going through it more quickly than we used to.
DP is adamant it’s down to DS consumption, that I should be stricter, that he was told off (and rightly so!!) as a child for drinking too much milk. I said I’m not rationing milk.

I can’t actually seem to find on google how much milk an 11 year old should drink.
I would say normally DS has milk with cereals (maybe 300mls), and a glass of milk in the evening (probably another 300mls). Sometimes he’ll have an extra glass but this is not every day, just as he feels like it.
Is this too much milk?

We probably go through 16 pints a week and that’s three adults.

GreenEggsHamandChips · 06/02/2019 20:43

No milk is good for calcium content and brain function. We get through more than that in a week

ChakiraChakra · 06/02/2019 20:43

Of course it's not too much milk. What a weird thing for your DP to be picking up on.

JazzyBBG · 06/02/2019 20:44

You have milk that lasts two weeks? 🤢

Babymamamama · 06/02/2019 20:44

I think it's fine. And milk isn't that expensive and full of calcium.

Jackshouse · 06/02/2019 20:44

Not all. He should be having 3 portions of calcium a day.

Look up how much calcium he should be having and how much he is getting.

What is your DH issue with it? Money or control?

TheFirstRuleOfFightClub · 06/02/2019 20:44

What does your dp thinks will happen if your ds drinks too much milk?

dottyp0104 · 06/02/2019 20:44

My daughter will not drink milk so I would be delighted if she drank this much. Better to be drinking milk than fizzy juice.

shatteredstudentmum · 06/02/2019 20:45

I had about that at that age. All through high school I would have cereal with milk and 1 or 2 glasses most days I would say, usually after school and with supper.

Neither of my children will touch milk or yogurt which is a nightmare so there's no way I'd ration it if they did.

Ontheboardwalk · 06/02/2019 20:45

Who on earth rations milk, especially for a child. Very strange

Lockerblocker · 06/02/2019 20:46

We constantly heard this as kids too. If you went to visit someone and drank their milk, it was a sin! It's mad.

user1493413286 · 06/02/2019 20:46

As two adults we get through more than that. I don’t see why you should limit it and surely that’s not exactly costing loads extra? Couple of pounds a week so it seems a bit mean? I’d also prefer my DC to drink milk than most other things.

LtJudyHopps · 06/02/2019 20:46

I can’t believe milk is to expensive for his own child to drink?? That’s so bizarre! No it doesn’t sound like too much milk - unless it’s full fat and he thinks it’s too much I don’t understand it.

artisanscotcheggs · 06/02/2019 20:47

Your DP is being an idiot.

QuickSloeGo · 06/02/2019 20:47

We are a family if 5 and nearly every day I buy milk! My kids only drink milk and water, it’s not a huge cost, they’re happy, look healthy and teeth are fine. Always saw it as a positive....

Knittink · 06/02/2019 20:47

I don't understand - does your dh think two or three glasses of milk per day are actually bad for your ds, or is it purely the cost? Milk isn't very expensive. What does your dh think ds should be drinking instead? Obviously water is good, and cheap. But I don't really see the issue with the milk tbh.

PomBearWithoutHerOFRS · 06/02/2019 20:48

How the actual fuck do you keep milk fresh for a fortnight?
We buy a four pint container every two-three days for two adults and two teens, and DD gets two litres of soy milk at the same time.
I would never ration it, I would much rather they had milk than pop or squash, and cereal or porridge is a go-to brekkie and snack.

babycatcher411 · 06/02/2019 20:48

@ChakiraChakra

What a weird thing for your DP to be picking up on

I thought so too, it hadn’t really even consciously entered my mind that he might be drinking too much!
I knew we were getting through more because I’ve had to get more, but it didn’t remotely concern me.

It came up in conversation because DS was talking about rationing milk in WW2 (topic at school) and how he wouldn’t have coped because they only got 3 pints for a week.
Then the conversation ensued re DS milk consumption.

Graphista · 06/02/2019 20:48

There's not one good reason I can think of for him wanting your GROWING CHILD to have less milk.

He's not having huge amounts, it's a perfectly healthy drink (damn sight better than Coke or energy drinks) & it's not expensive.

What IS his problem? Is your son his biological son?

Is money tight? (Even if it was and I've been on v tight budgets milk is the LAST thing I'd scrimp on!)

PhilomenaButterfly · 06/02/2019 20:49

No, you shouldn't ration milk, and it isn't expensive. Confused

BowBeau · 06/02/2019 20:49

He thinks it’s unreasonable and isn’t a cost we should accommodate

A 4 pint carton costs about £1. Your DH thinks that £1.50 a week is too much for your child to be drinking? FFS is he always this greedy? Coke is more expensive than milk so I don’t see how switching your child to a less healthy drink will help anyway?

Let your DS drink milk for the calcium. Tell DH to stop being a greedy twat.

Houseonahill · 06/02/2019 20:50

I go through 8 pints of milk a week with one adult and one toddler and I didn't think we used much, definitely not more than average.

anickelstory · 06/02/2019 20:50

I don't see a problem with an 11yo drinking a pint a day.
He doesn't need to ration it!

But 3 pints a week would be plenty for me Grin

babycatcher411 · 06/02/2019 20:51

@PomBearWithoutHerOFRS

How the actual fuck do you keep milk fresh for a fortnight?

That’s a good question, maybe I do buy more than I realise over the 2 week period.

I think it’s cost, he seems to think milk is expensive to drink at the rate DS drinks it.

Lovewinemorethanhusband · 06/02/2019 20:51

I go through around 12 pints a week sometimes more especially if I have cereal or porridge for breakfast, at 11 I'd encourage him to drink milk over fizzy etc
