To hate Family Guy?

Dh is watching family guy and I hate the programme. It’s often sick and crosses that time in what I find funny, but this episode in particular is the one where the baby is pregnant by the dog! The dog hits the baby in the stomach when he’s told.

Just had a row with dh as I told him to turn it off, he was laughing at the ‘jokes’ and I don’t know I just find it all so distasteful.

Waiting to be told I’m a prude and need to get a sense of humour as I’m sure I will do.

"Shut up meg!" I love family guy often laugh with my DP watching it. Just watch an episode and don't take everything so seriously - It's supposed to be offensive that's why it's funny. Like cards against humanity.

Blue peter sucked! Not even at primary school would I be caught watching that! "Giggerdy"

eurochick · 01/02/2019 19:49

I like it but there are sometimes it just goes too far. The Down's Syndrome episode is one example. I have to turn that off.

ContessaIsOnADietDammit · 01/02/2019 19:52

Oh, I love it. It's dark AF and nothing is off-limits; of course, the downside to that is that nothing is off-limits Grin

Melons66 · 01/02/2019 19:58

Got this confused with South Park which I despise.

If anyone else doesn't like it, don't go and see Book of Mormon. The writers are the same. Hadn't realised that and hated it.

Melons66 · 01/02/2019 19:58

I love dark comedy BTW but funny comedy. This is not!

ListenLinda · 01/02/2019 19:59

I like it, totally understand why some people don’t. The jokes and innuendos are in no way subtle.
‘Hey Brian, why didn’t we invade XX country’ ‘oh i dont know, maybe because they don’t have any oil?!’
It’s amazing what they get away with tbf.

Favourite episode is The Road to the North Pole. Watch it every Christmas and chuckle all the way through.

KaleidoscopeEyes · 01/02/2019 20:01

Oh I snort with laughter regularly at Family Guy. SM is sharp as a tack. Although I bet he's a shit irl.

IamFrauBlucher · 01/02/2019 20:02

ListenLinda ....because Christmas time is killing us.....Grin

Became mine and DS's favourite Christmas song last year. I love the overall message of those episodes.

Houseonahill · 01/02/2019 20:02

I like family guy and it's ok your husband does too but the Tele should be shared, if he's had it since 2pm you should be able to watch what you want in the evenings. Family guy isn't the issue selfish husband is the issue.

ListenLinda · 01/02/2019 20:06

Iam yes! I love the message too, because honestly, it really is true.

Clever stuff really, if wrapped up in a somewhat distateful wrapper sometimes Grin

Andylion · 01/02/2019 20:12

I hate the way Meg is treated. I haven't watched it in years.

ElderMcKinley · 01/02/2019 20:15

@Melons66 my friend hates South Park but loved The Book of Mormon!

Family Guy was good to begin with and then seemed to try to be as offensive as possible, which I only find funny in small doses tbh. South Park can be too crude for me at times but there are some absolute fantastic episodes in there. Usually involving Cartman.

dragonsfire · 01/02/2019 20:17

Oh The Down syndrome episode was actually very good (ok maybe the Sarah Palin bit was a little harsh) the part was played by a genuine person with the syndrome and showed people with disabilities can kind of be jerks, it’s not an excuse to be a jerk.

Again OP if not for you don’t watch it! Make a compromise with the husband - have him watch it on the iPad with headphones now and then rather than you having to change and he only needs to watch now and then not obsessively.

OldGreyBoots · 01/02/2019 20:19

I used to enjoy Family Guy, but recently started watching King of the Hill and it's ruined all other animated shows for me! Genuinely funny, very rarely crude, and some really sensitively handled issues. About the only cartoon where I really feel for all the characters.

MaxTeyon · 01/02/2019 20:22

It’s hilarious, the further over the line the better!

whatacrapusername2306 · 01/02/2019 20:25

Family Guy, Simpsons, American Dad, all absolute shite. What grown adult wants to watch cartoons? I can watch mind numbing animations with my kids should I get a spare 5 minutes (I don’t Grin).

tinytreefrog · 01/02/2019 20:25

What's not to like.........?

Stressedout10 · 01/02/2019 20:28

Family guy is the best sorry yabvu

CrumpBrunette · 01/02/2019 20:30

Eek, sorry but I love it! It's written by rather left-wing Americans and I love how it takes the piss out of racists, trump supporters etc!

Foxandthehound · 01/02/2019 20:33

YANBU to dislike family guy

YABVU to say that your DH can't watch it because it doesn't meet your standard of funny.

sweeneytoddsrazor · 01/02/2019 20:37

Aw Family Guy is great and SM is a genius. Chill and have a cool hwip

NewName8674 · 01/02/2019 20:37

Family Guy is just a string of gags, with offensiveness serving as a substitute for wit. That was fine for maybe 3 seasons but got very old. Doesn't deserve to be mentioned in the same breath as peak Simpsons/South Park, Archer, King of the Hill or Rick and Morty (although I do find the latter overrated).

sweeneytoddsrazor · 01/02/2019 20:38

Some not a.

JustAnotherMillennial · 01/02/2019 20:40

My mum was pretty chill but she banned Family Guy (and also Southpark) at home growing up, even when we got to teenagers Grin

Since leaving home though I can see why, it is pretty crap. DH watches it from time to time, I leave him to it.

ShesAnEasyLlama · 01/02/2019 20:43

when Quagmire and Peter form a band

Yes @TrackerBar that's possibly my all time favourite too. 🎵Have you ever put butter on a pop tart? 🎵

I love all things Seth M. He is quite open that his stuff is meant to he offensive, crude and make you think. I believe he says his shows, FG in particular, are intended to be "equal opportunity offensive".

As well as calling out Spacey and Weinstein, they referred to Bruce Jenner as a woman way before she came out as Caitlyn.

I also love the Road to the North Pole episode - definitely makes you think about Christmas in a capitalist society.

I love The Simpsons too. DS has watched it for many years and I love seeing him beginning to understand more of the jokes as he gets older. Some of the more complex or obscure ones I've explained to him (Greenday playing Nearer My God To Thee at the beginning of the movie for eg), but there have been some subtle lessons learned from it.
