Is this normal? I'm constantly washing towels.

Fresta I think (it's a while since I read up on this) that the longer the cycle the more environmental/economical it is. Can't remember why. No doubt washes the clothes better as well, and certainly rinses them better - it's the rinse cycle that's massively reduced the shorter the cycle, and personally I'd rather not be wearing clothes full of detergent.

Fresta · 01/02/2019 16:28

Well- it makes no sense to me! I wash everything on a short cycle unless it's heavily stained!

Fresta · 01/02/2019 16:33

My washing machine has the option to add an extra rinse on the quick wash which only adds another 10 minutes. Of course clothes will be cleaner on a longer, hotter cycle but not better for the environment! Most things I was aren't really that dirty- just need freshening up!

Just give everyone a coloured towel then they can keep it a week in their room on their rad to dry . Everyone here has their own bathroom so it's easy but washing after every use is crazy !

SilverySurfer · 01/02/2019 16:43

Oliversmumsarmy
I do 38 washes per week.

That's over 5 loads a day which is ridiculous. I live alone and do 2 loads a week - 1 for clothing and 1 for whites. Are you a family of ten? Do you do anything else or is your life totally taken up with washing and the resulting drying etc?

Enta · 01/02/2019 16:57

Everyone here has their own bathroom

I'm jealous!

hendricksy · 01/02/2019 17:02

@Enta .. it's a roomy new build with too many bathrooms 😬

CallMeVito · 01/02/2019 17:06

SilverySurfer
read the thread, the poster does 38 washes because her child has cancer.

And 2 loads a week don't sound very much at all - I used to do at least one load a day for 2 adults.

SaturdayNext · 01/02/2019 17:15

CallMeVito, the poster has however subsequently said that she has always done 38 washes a week - and it's her partner, not her child.

Snowdrop30 · 01/02/2019 17:18

I wash every other week for environmental reasons. You are as clean as you are going to get when you use them! We have one each.

Fresta · 01/02/2019 17:25

I don't even believe you Oliversmummy to be honest. Surely most people vary the number of washes each week, and if you did do 38 washes, do you keep a count? I don't count my washes each week- sometimes it's a couple a day, sometimes I go a couple of days where I'm too busy and it gets left, sometimes we've been swimming and have an extra couple, sometimes DH runs and has his kit to wash, others not- sometimes. surely most people don't keep a tally!

Whisky2014 · 01/02/2019 17:42

I also don't believe it. Unless she washes one item per wash! :D

Enta · 01/02/2019 17:42

38 washes a week is approx. 5.5 washes a day.

1 whites, 1 darks, 1 towels, 2 sets of sheets? My neighbour does this as a (merged) family of 7.

As a household of just 2, I don't think I do 38 a year! Blush

hendricksy please let me live with you Grin

hendricksy · 01/02/2019 17:45

@Enta ... you are welcome but the towels only get washed once a week 🤷‍♀️.. they go on the towel rails in between so at least they are always warm 🤗🤗

Thanks for the advice - I did read the thread and still think it's excessive.

Two a week works for me as I live alone. Why split whites/ sheets/ towels? that's one load to me and I have sufficient clothes to change daily and wash weekly.

Oliversmumsarmy · 01/02/2019 19:10

It is DP who has cancer.

We have king-size beds. My machine will only hold 1 duvet cover per wash and base sheet and pillowcases in another wash. So that is 8 washes. A towel and a few bits of clothing per wash.

It is starts adding up

FlossieTeacakesFurCoat18 · 01/02/2019 19:16

It has literally never occurred to me to share towels with family members Envy or to wash a towel after using it once Shock. What do you do about hand towels, throw them in the laundry basket every time you wash your hands?

RiverTam · 01/02/2019 19:57

Rubbish. Even my mum's machines in the 80s held more than that and that's a big standard machine.

You're bullshitting.

TheDowagerCuntess · 01/02/2019 20:27

Right? This is what I mean about the level of hand-holding some people seem to need.

Queenofthestress · 01/02/2019 20:43

@FlossieTeacakesFurCoat18 facecloths and big towels get washed after every use (skin conditions) and hand towels every 2/3 uses

bibbitybobbityyhat · 01/02/2019 20:47

Oh leave Oliversmumsarmy to it. In the great scheme of things who cares even if you believe her ? It's up to her if she spends her short time on this earth as a slave to her laundry. She's an exceptional oddity and not something to get worked up about - everyone else on the thread does fewer washes per week than her, even the other one use per towel posters.

KatharinaRosalie · 01/02/2019 22:31

38 washes (and why count them?) means then also washing all bedding every single day?

Oliversmumsarmy · 02/02/2019 12:32

Rubbish. Even my mum's machines in the 80s held more than that and that's a big standard machine

I agree I have had machines hold more.

Had a big American top loader and I could get away with 4 loads but this is one of those intergrated things and if you load it more than 1/3 full it bangs out of line and it is a pain to push back in place

greenelephantscarf · 02/02/2019 12:47

my wonderful mil has a basket thingy of guest towels in the bathroom.

on top is a shelf, underneath a basket.
basically you are supposed to take the top towel after you washed your hand and the after drying put it in the basket. so they are sort of single use.
but they are small towels that don't tak up much room in the wash.
