Is this normal? I'm constantly washing towels.

I've honestly never been to a home that had one hand towel for each family member hanging in the bathroom Hmm Bath towels, sure, but balking over sharing the same hand towel with your immediate family just seems bizarre.

I thought exactly the same thing. I have never seen this before.

I remember a time when washing was done once a week, on a Monday Grin
People wore the same clothes for longer, shared towels and changed beds less often. Blankets got washed once a year probably.
I don't think that would be acceptable today but the obsession with germs and washing on Mumsnet makes me laugh.
DP and I use a separate bath towel each which get washed every couple of weeks and I have been known to leave them three weeks. I can't say I think about too much.
We share hand towels.

Depends where! Even around the 1st world war some families had washing done several times a week - every day with a child in nappies or when a woman had a period (even if it wasn't told so bluntly).

I grew up in a house of multi use towels for all and sundry. I was amazed when I grew up and realised there was a concept of 'own towels'. I will say however I have an amazing immune system.

I don't want to admit how often (or rather, not) I wash our towels. 😳

Op, yabu. But I'm not judging, more admiring you.

@Fleurdalys why have you resurrected a thread you already replied to in 2019?!
(I went back a couple of pages to see the consensus and your ‘sod the environment’ comment stuck in my head, otherwise I probably wouldn’t have noticed!

I hope the five other adults are pulling their weight with the excessive towel laundry too?

Well you kind of did resurrect it @Fleurdalys didn't you? Otherwise it would still be nicely dormant along with the other million threads about stuff so boring that eternal hibernation is the only acceptable answer.

That’s so ridiculous
and wasteful
and environmentally irresponsible

How many loads of laundry do you do a day? We do 2 one light, one dark, and throw the towels in with the light since we don't usually have so many light clothes so there is space and the towels are light.

Why on earth would you do that? No wonder the planet’s in a mess.
I still remember the most barmy MN-uber-hygiene post from years ago, from someone saying, ‘Eeww! She couldn’t possibly use the same towel as her dh - it’d have his dead skin cells on it!’
How such people ever manage to do anything so ‘unhygienic’ as have sex with their own partner, defeats me.

As for hotels, most I’ve stayed in for the past several years ask you to put towels in the bath or shower if you want them changed, otherwise just hang them up.

To everyone whinging she is "BU" get a life. I also wash towels after every use. I also wash tea and hand towels constantly. If I want to spend my electricity that way I will!

We have two towels each, mine are pale Green, DH are cream and DS are blue. We use them for at least a week. DS hangs his in a hook in his room, DH has the bannisters and I hang mine on a hook in our room.

Apart from the eco aspect I have always only ever washed stuff when really needed because it’s work isn’t it. I have only ever met a couple of women who really seem to love constantly cleaning and chores. One just seems like a regular person but she has zero hobbies and the other is a friend who has such high standards in everything it feels like she is punishing herself in her attempt to be perfect in everything. They may very well wash towels every day.

Sorry to post on a zombie, but those who wash their towels after every use, how often do you have to replace them? Because that’s not good for the environment either is it?

Jumpingthruhoops · 09/04/2024 11:13

Our towels are on hooks behind the bathroom door. After we've used them, they go back on the same hooks to dry.

I'm with most people - separate towel for each family member and wash every week or so.

I always wash my swimming towel after every use though - I think my reasoning is it gets much wetter than a normal towel, has been in a public area and smells of chlorine! Am curious to know whether this is also an unacceptable waste of resources? I only go every week or so.

I mainly use the rinse and spin function (15 mins) on washing machine for towel and costume after swimming. Towel goes in main wash ... occasionally

Leaving aside the weirdness of commenting on a zombie thread you commented on at the time…
You love washing towels when it’s chucking it down with rain 90% of the time? This is the wettest spring on record, isn’t it?
