In being sick of the way women are endlessly objectfied and treated like pieces of meat?

Rant alert!

I'm just so f'ing sick of it (pardon my French).

It's everywhere, on television, when you walk into the newsagents, advertising billboards, shops - AAARGHH!!

I don't remember it being like this when I was younger. Perhaps I was just more innocent then or maybe its got worse. Depressing to think what view of women this encourages, and that my DS will grow up seeing this stuff as a matter of course.

sigh

Am I just a raddled old prude or what?

"falls flat on her arse because she has made numerous comments about David Tennant"

who's david tennant?
and good on you for admitting your sexualisation of another human being. i mean ffs we all do it.

Tortington · 04/07/2007 14:07

you bunch of old wrinkled prudes you wih yer " it wasn;t like that in my day" rose tinted glasses

wat the fuckare you on - rmember sam fox

the dancers on top of the pops

women have always got their bits out in th media - it hasnt got worse recently

now - i dont mind a bit of objectifying. i dont want to be no objectified.

if i was wearing a specially designed dress for wimbledn - in line with many other high rofile players - i would quite like people to take an interest. especially as womesn tennis is fucking dull - it muh depends on whetherthe other player has muscles to rival any man - so ey can win the serve - the point - and there is no game to watch just two women one hits he ball - one in't strong enough to hit it back. the ugliest one who looks lie a man wins.

Rhubarb · 04/07/2007 14:07

I've shagged Doctor Who.

Rhubarb · 04/07/2007 14:07

Hey Custy - I'm officially "cross" today! Want to join me?

chevre · 04/07/2007 14:08

so amen you are perfectly happy with the treatment of woman in the media & society?

SueBaroo · 04/07/2007 14:08

amen - David tennant = Doctor Who.

And I don't objectify him. I love him for his mind and sharp wit...

Tortington · 04/07/2007 14:11

why are youcross.?

Rhubarb · 04/07/2007 14:11

dunno

amen · 04/07/2007 14:12

"so amen you are perfectly happy with the treatment of woman in the media & society?"

i can't speak for the whole world as there may well be exploitations outside of my scope but within mainstream uk& irish media i would say yes. if i don't approve of an ad campaign or media outlet i vote with my feet by not purchasing said products/readin or watching the output. none of the models are forced into the lifestyle instead they aspire to it. for me it is simply capatilism and democracy in action both of which i support so it would be slightly hypocritical of me to condemn their results.

southeastastra · 04/07/2007 14:13

loads of women aspire to the look though don't they? spray tans, cosmetic surgery, endless talk of shoes. it's no wonder really.

chevre · 04/07/2007 14:14

great!

amen · 04/07/2007 14:37

plus seeing hot women on billboards brightens up my day and makes me smile.

Janos · 04/07/2007 15:10

"women have always got their bits out in th media - it hasnt got worse recently
"

Of course they bloody have and yes I do remember Sam Fox etc, very well.

FFS.

I am NOT talking about men finding naked women attractive and going 'oh how dreadful, I disaporove'- well of course they do, it's nature!

What I AM talking about, and what pisses me off is the WAY it is done.

And say what you like, 20 years ago magazines like Zoo, Nuts and FHM were NOT on stands in the newsagents along with other publications. Of course porn mags were around (I know cuz I found my Dads stash under the bed!) but they weren't in your face the way this stuff is.

I am so sick to death of the way any woman who questions all of this is sneered at as though she's some sort of humourless prudish old baggage.

Now that is definitely a rant.

OP posts:
Janos · 04/07/2007 15:20

And page 3 is almost quaint and old fashioned compared with that stuff as well.

OP posts:
Elasticwoman · 04/07/2007 16:36

What IS worse about the exploitation of women through porn these days, compared to a generation or two ago, is the fact that young girls are having cosmetic surgery in the hope of making their fortune.

Not only are they risking their own health and well-being, but also giving men who consume porn an even more perverted view of women's bodies and what those bodies are for than they already have.

Elasticwoman · 04/07/2007 16:37

And btw I did write to an advertiser once and complain about an image of women I found obscene. They dropped the ad.

I think you will never stop the porn industry/lads mags/strip clubs because as long as there are women out there who are willing to do it then it will never go away.

Janos · 04/07/2007 18:27

No, you are right BacktoBasics.

I don't object to the private consumption of porn (which I know many people will disagree with but that is my view). It'll never stop existing and, well, people - especially men - enjoy using it.

What I DO object to, in the strongest terms, is the way it is now forced into mainstream culture. Some folk here are saying don't look at it if you don't like it.

Well, it's hard not to when it's so relentless and in your face all the time. what are we supposed to go? Go around with our eyes shut and ears blocked? We don't live in a bubble.

DaddyJ · 04/07/2007 18:51

You are being pretty reasonable actually.

Even from a bloke's point of view I would say
you can have too much of a good thing.

I am fairly optimistic, though, that it will turn out
to be a fad and the so-called 'raunch culture'
will be toned down in due course.

DaddyJ · 04/07/2007 18:53

Credit to Amen for a balsy and valid post.

It's not just women who feel objectified -
and Daniel Craig is in fact the perfect example - 'Craig shocks fans'.

I had to laugh when I read that -
'I am a serious actor, doncha know, doncha know, for fuck's sake!!'

Janos · 04/07/2007 19:10

Cheers for that DaddyJ, good to hear the male point of view.

Maybe it is just a fad. I bloody hope so!

Backtobasics · 04/07/2007 20:15

It's funny because i read in last months Cosmo that this generation are ment to be the most advanced sexually. But then they said actually this generation are the most prudish of them all with only a tiny percentage of girls showering together etc. It was quite interesting to read because you wouldn't think of girls now adays being prudish at all but i think about it, i could never see girls all jumping in the shower together after sports at school. It wouldn't happen.

Janos · 04/07/2007 20:58

Really BacktoBasics? Very odd if its true, but I do remember girls at school not wanting to shower etc after games(going back a bit)so maybe thats not a new thing.

OP posts:
Backtobasics · 05/07/2007 09:07

I know girls don't shower together after games etc in recent times but i think they used to back in the 1950s. I think that the reason girls don't now adays is because they have many hang ups about their bodies because of the whole size 0/skinny craze thats happening. Girls fail to be confident about their bodies because of the unrealistic standards that is set apon them so there for don't want other girls to see them naked in case of judgement and embarresment.
