Not allowed to cut up pizza in Wetherspoons?

We were in Wetherspoons at the weekend having a cheap and cheerful lunch and my DN had a pizza.
We asked them if they could cut up her pizza for her because the last time it wasn’t and the waitress told us they weren’t allowed to anymore and don’t even have pizza cutters in the kitchen. We laughed as we assumed it was a joke but no when the pizza arrived it wasn’t cut up and the waitress said again that for health and safety reasons they weren’t allowed to use a pizza cutter, we asked if they could have used a knife and she said no. We were a bit Hmm
Then she came over with a very sharp steak knife and said we could cut it up ourselves with that if we wanted.

Is this a nationwide rule or is our local Wetherspoons a bit odd?

Also isn’t the owner of Wetherspoons desperate to get us out of the EU because of silly little rules like this?

Fatasfook Wed 30-Jan-19 11:40:31 He’s a twat and we should all be boycotting his crappy establishments.

Yes is and I do.

People can only read what other people write, Mooka.

diddl · 30/01/2019 13:07

Food doesn't usually arrive pre cut, so there's no reason why pizza should be an exception.

That said, a wheel or sharp enough knife should be provided.

Birdsgottafly · 30/01/2019 13:13

Fatasfook, my DD is on a Level 3 professional cooking course. Some of their past students now work in for WS.

In our City, the Staff are trained and it isn't Min Wage.

My DD works in Pizza Hut on MW but still takes pride in what she does.

I hate the put down of MW jobs on here.

Butterymuffin · 30/01/2019 13:14

There was one banning banana shaped bananas and cucumber shaped cucumbers so I wouldn't be surprised if there was.

What bollocks. Suited the mainstream press to tell us this of course. Meanwhile supermarkets are selling 'wonky' fruit and veg in spite of the apparent EU ban on produce shape variations. Funny that.

Crustaceans · 30/01/2019 13:15

I can totally believe that the owner of Wetherspoons would ban pizza cutters himself so that he can blame it on the EU and bang on to credulous fools about ‘health and safety gone mad’. That’s pretty much his thing. 😆

It’s pretty shit that the staff wouldn’t just cut up the pizza (using a knife) for your grandmother. It’s not exactly great customer service and I’m pretty sure there will be knives in the kitchen.

Even where you get pre-sliced pizzas, gluten free pizzas very often arrive unsliced, to prevent cross-contamination (or at least reassure you that there has been none).

YABVU for going to Wetherspoons.

My apologies

Ha well I don't really understand why you wouldn't just cut up your child's pizza yourself with your cutlery, but I have to say I've found Weatherspoons have some strange rules.

We went out for a big family meal for DH's birthday. I say big as there were extended family with us so five children and four adults. DH had a two beers over the course of his meal. I then offered to buy him another birthday drink - but was refused at the bar. Apparently their manager had a blanket rule that any adults responsible for children who were also in their pub could not be served more than two alcoholic drinks Confused. I questioned the logic of this, when I firstly wasn't drinking, and also could have taken the DC into the pub for a meal on my own - so even if DH got drunk (which he wouldn't on three pints, but that's not the point) - my children would be perfectly well supervised.

I was so annoyed at the 'nannying' they were trying to do that we've never returned because I am a fucking adult and don't need to be told by an 18 year old that I mustn't get too drunk to look after my own children Hmm

HenweeArcher · 30/01/2019 13:28

I literally have no idea why they couldn’t just cut the pizza for you. It’s not an unreasonable request and would have taken all of 30 seconds. It is commonplace to cut a pizza being served to a child in my experience.

Badtasteflump · 30/01/2019 13:29

Can I just add that I did actually take out DH for a 'naice' meal elsewhere on his actual birthday - I'm not that cheap Grin

GlitterNails · 30/01/2019 13:31

Some of the attitudes on here are absolutely disgusting. It really sums up the country right now - I’m all right jack, so fuck those that struggle.

Companies should provided adjustments to those with disabilities and if that means taking a minute to cut a pizza so an older person can enjoy it too, then so be it. The the sneering going on that and for someone to actually say that people with any kind of health issue shouldn’t leave the house without a carer is just awful.

It’s sad that a simple thread about pizza really shows the attitudes towards those who just need a bit of help.

GrandTheftWalrus · 30/01/2019 13:33

Me and DP had a pizza in wetherspoons that wasn't cut and they just gave us a knife to cut it up by ourselves.

I'm sure pizza express does the same.

SneakyGremlins · 30/01/2019 13:34

My friend who works there says the kitchen can cut them up Hmm

Not allowed to cut up pizza in Wetherspoons?

Not allowed to cut up pizza in Wetherspoons?
Calvinsmam · 30/01/2019 13:40

Thanks sneaky

It must have just been our spoons being weird then.

I like the way Sneaky had to screen-shot the conversation to prove it really happened Grin

Boulty · 30/01/2019 13:48

LOL this is so funny

Cut up the pizza yourself.... or niece cuts it, or someone else in your group cuts it up....

Boulty · 30/01/2019 13:50

I often dine with friends who have an adult daughter who struggles to cut due to disability... we don't blame the food outlet we help her ourselves ….

Aquilla · 30/01/2019 13:51

OP, you made two mistakes in Mumsnetter's World.

  1. You admitted you frequent Whetherspoons. The snobs hate this.
  2. You hinted that the EU had silly rules. The snobs hate this.
Run while you can! YANBU.
Boulty · 30/01/2019 13:52

To Glitternails -- what is the big deal about someone who is with the person who struggles to cut said pizza actually helping themselves.... you know that is what friends are for etc... not moan about the staff not cutting said pizza … just help the people you are dining with?

Everyone has to make a big drama out of everything nowadays... it isn't anti disabled at all ...just help out each other

Pinkbells · 30/01/2019 13:52

That's so odd. You can't really cut a pizza effectively without a pizza cutter!

JacksonPillock · 30/01/2019 13:56

I know nobody wants reason to get in the way of a good telling off, but OP has clearly stated that she wasn't moaning about having to cut up the pizza, just saying that it's weird the restaurant have a rule against their kitchen staff doing it before it's served. Which IS weird.

BarbaraofSevillle · 30/01/2019 14:04

what is the big deal about someone who is with the person who struggles to cut said pizza actually helping themselves

But the point is that the OPs Gran has said that she prefers for the food to be served already sliced up, so that she doesn't have to sit there while someone else cuts her food up for her, like she is a toddler, which is perfectly understandable. None of her dining companions are refusing to help her.
