She wants a tattoo on her face AIBU

Are facial tattoos socially acceptable now?

I asked my god daughter (23) what she wanted for her birthday and she has asked for money towards a new tattoo, on her face (she has a few elsewhere). I have told her I won't contribute and that I think it's not a good idea. She thinks I'm old fashioned and out of touch and she may be right. I spoke to a highly skilled tattoo artist I know and she said she would not tattoo faces or hands unless she knows them very well and that it was a terrible idea for a young woman who had her first tattoo a year ago.

I don't have any objections to tattoos and think they can be very beautiful, I also wouldn't necessary judge someone I met for having a facial tattoo (depending on what it was) but I think having one will negatively effect your life, especially employment opportunities.

So are facial tattoos still a barrier to employment or am I am old fogey?
If anyone has a facial tattoo I'd love your opinion on this :)

I had to be very sure I’d ike it on my face forever and I doubt I ever would!

They will be judge no two ways about it. Shouldn’t happen but it does. What kind of career is she in?

Shikah · 29/01/2019 20:15

I will add that it was probably not the best that I'd seen this young woman in the news shortly before my GD suggested it!

What the hell has that woman done to her face?! Who is that??

MissionItsPossible · 29/01/2019 20:17

I’m sure some people will say her body her choice which is true but if this was a relation or friend of mine I would be strongly advising them not to do it and certainly wouldn’t contribute to it

IAmWonderWoman · 29/01/2019 20:18

What is it she wants?

Yanbu btw, facial tattoos are horrible.

Shikah · 29/01/2019 20:18

That is a tattoo of Harry Styles face on the cheek of singer Kelsy Karter. It seems a very misguided publicity stunt :(

I hope it is fake and all a prank.

Facial tattoos are dreadful. It's such an awful, stupid thing to do imo.

SpoilsburyToastGirl · 29/01/2019 20:18

I remove tattoos for a living and can say that the best lasers can now fully remove a tattoo without causing a scar or problems with skin texture and tone that said it is a long, painful and expensive process. We work very closely with a lot of tattooists (referrals for clients wanting a cover up) and agree that most reputable tattoo artists wouldn't be willing to tattoo a client's face. She will regret it.

Singlenotsingle · 29/01/2019 20:18

How many employers will be similarly old fashioned, and she will lose job offers?

Redglitter · 29/01/2019 20:18

As a matter of interest what is your daughter wanting to have tattooed on her face

Its rumoured that tattoo in the photo is a fake.

JAMMFYesPlease · 29/01/2019 20:18

I wouldn't do a tattoo on my face and I have a load elsewhere. My hand would be different but the face is the first thing anyone sees and will immediately lead to judgment (I know it shouldn't but it would). Very few tattoo artists I know would do the face.

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 29/01/2019 20:21

Even people like Beckham and Robbie Williams haven't got tattoos on their faces

Biancadelriosback · 29/01/2019 20:22

What does she want and where? I know someone with a small collection of stars next to her temple. She can easily cover it with her hair/makeup and looks pretty. Not for me personally but not all facial tattoos are hardcore

WhereTheFuckIsMyFuckingCoat · 29/01/2019 20:24

Is she aboriginal or Maori? Here it's accepted if it's a cultural tattoo (Aus). Otherwise I'd say no. Judgemental or not, if it's not religious or cultural it would quash and notion she had of joining eg an emergency service later in life.

LordVoldetort · 29/01/2019 20:24

It’s a really bad idea. She will get judged for it and she is probably less likely to get a job following an interview if she hadn’t covered it up

AhNowTed · 29/01/2019 20:25

They are definitely career limiting.

Few places will employ her with a visible facial tattoo.

Bluelonerose · 29/01/2019 20:26

Chatted about this with my tattooist (I wasn't debating a facial tattoo just chatting) he said unless someone already had one on their face or the were 80/90% covered in tattoos already he and tattooists he's knows would flat out refuse.

I saw that Harry styles one earlier it's hideous. I can't believe anyone would do that to their face Shock

Shikah · 29/01/2019 20:26

Thanks for all your comments.

I know they are popular now and that a lot of celebrities have them but celebrities already have a define creative 'self employed' career path and this is my concern. I have always taught her 'your body, your choice' and I have no doubt that if she wants it, she will get it anyway.

She wants a a cross near her left eye (and to add a lightening bolt neat her right eye at a later date!)

Anyone who gets a tattoo on their face is a fucking idiot and I don't care how judgey that makes me

FortyFacedFuckers · 29/01/2019 20:27

I have many tattoos so definitely not judgy about tattoos but I really wouldn’t support my dc getting a tattoo on their faces!
What is it she wants done? Considering she is asking for money towards it I am imagining something big?

FortyFacedFuckers · 29/01/2019 20:28

Cross post

TrudeauGirl · 29/01/2019 20:28

In my opinion facial tattoos should only be for cultural reasons. For example some tribes around the world do have them.

In the western world however, I think they look awful. I do think people will regret them and it will hurt a lot to take a facial tattoo off

(Just my opinion)

jaseyraex · 29/01/2019 20:28

Any good tattoo artist will not tattoo someone's hands or face unless the person is already very heavily tattooed or they know it won't impact the person's job/life. Yeah some can be small and pretty, but it's always visible unless you've got a good cover up foundation.

NicoleNoPants · 29/01/2019 20:29

Some can be very delicate and pretty but I think you need to be fully subscribed to a particular life style.
