Feminists across the UK have "defaced" statues by dressing them in T-shirts containing the dictionary definition of the word woman .More details here.

Trans rights groups are calling this a hate crime. I hate to sound like such an old fogie but this it sounds like political correctness gone mad! How is this offensive? What's so offensive about the word woman I don't understand!

Weaponising... Confused

So the very act of being a woman and using the term in its strict dictionary sense seen as an aggression Shock Who knew my very existence and concept could be so offensive? No wonder so many men hate women and want to hurt them. They are just defending themselves. The poor little lambs Hmm

papayasareyum · 29/01/2019 14:42

it's important to distinguish the difference between a woman and a transwoman. It's interesting that this discussion doesn't really occur between men and transmen. Perhaps this is because transmen are biologically female, so don't have the same sense of entitlement?

drspouse · 29/01/2019 14:45

But also because males want to attack specifically women (so they could feel entitled, and decide to take over someone else's space e.g. Black men's space, but in fact, they'd much rather take over women's space).

JacquesHammer · 29/01/2019 14:54

There is a perfectly good word to describe someone with a penis - man.

There are perfectly good words to describe transgender people - transwoman and transman.

Why then does someone with a penis need to use the word “woman” when they’re not a human, adult female?

I am very much for inclusivity of all, that doesn’t override biology.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 29/01/2019 14:58

Those who are horrified that people are agitating against the inclusion of the be-penised in the definition of woman - do you propose a different word to denote those that were formerly under that definition?

Are you asking what word could be used to identify transwomen? Cos you already used it... transwomen Easy!

Or it should be.

The bottom line is that a minority of men are asking the whole world to become Flat Earthers. They are demanding that biology is re-written so that human beings can change sex. Nope! Can't be done. So fuck off and get your head around that fact that transwomen are males who are unhappy performing the male gender stereotype and want to have a try at the female gender stereotype.

THAT is something we have all been accepting off for hundereds if not thousands of years. Gender fluidity is not new... 1980s and Adam Ant, Phil Oakey, Annie Lennox, k d lang etc etc etc

What went wrong? Why did gender stereotypes sudenly become an indcredibly restrictive box that some poeple desperately want to live in?

All those wmen who think TWAW need to have a stop and think... the most surface of thinking... real women wear trousers, have short hair, may never wear make up. Transwomen usually cling to the more Barbie version of female... as, sadly, do many young women these days. Why?

Gender stereoypes are incredibly harmful. Women's Lib fought agains them for decades and suddenly, in the 21st Century, they have slammed back into place like iron bars! WHY?????

papayasareyum · 29/01/2019 15:08

I’m bewildered when people don’t get this, don’t think it through. And by people, I mean women and transwomen, as men do seem perfectly able to grasp it. Do they genuinely not understand women’s concerns, don’t care about them or are so hellbent on appearing kind and accommodating they’ll sell women down the river in order to do so?

Onlyjoinedforthisthread · 29/01/2019 15:17

I think people understand the concerns, it's the way some people express those concerns that causes the problems.
Who was this particular protest aimed at? Has it worked?

papayasareyum · 29/01/2019 15:20

How do you think women should express their concerns? Because after all history has taught us that having a nice chat with tea and biscuits usually solves stuff...and that women should probably be seen, not heard and let the men stand up and be counted instead?Hmm

tellmewhenthespaceshiplands · 29/01/2019 15:29

Please can someone provide a specific, actual, real life example of a right taken away from trans people that they previously had and who the offender was who took away said right? Most welcome

CuriousaboutSamphire · 29/01/2019 15:33

You'd think so, but very very many people have no idea that here is any issue/debate to be had. They are utterly unaware of there being any assault on women's rights!

So daft things like Man Friday and putting T shirts on statues are ways of bringing the debate outr into the full sunlight - you may notice that it is ONLY WOMEN who are trying to do this!

We shouldn't have to resort to silly stunts, but when all other more usual avenues are blocked, often aggressively, sometimes with violence even terrorist style acts, what the fuck else are we supposed to do?

CuriousaboutSamphire · 29/01/2019 15:34

tellme please don't go holding your breath Smile

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 29/01/2019 15:43

You spoilsport curious

I wanted to see how long it was going to take tell to go blue

Aridane · 29/01/2019 15:44

Unfortunately, usernumbers1234, I think you iright

Aridane · 29/01/2019 15:46

I was not aware of this t shirt demonstration or the penis stickers other than through mumsnet / FER. Has it been reported in the mainstream media?

Aridane · 29/01/2019 15:46

(FWR, not FER)

Onlyjoinedforthisthread · 29/01/2019 15:47

CuriousaboutSamphire
But it hasn't worked because the only place I'm seeing it discussed is on here and it's the usual people discussing it.

tellmewhenthespaceshiplands · 29/01/2019 15:54

Rufus and Curious I'm practicing some tantric breathing thingy. I may also have a little nanny nap while I wait.

tellmewhenthespaceshiplands · 29/01/2019 15:54

Shit can I say nanny?

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 29/01/2019 15:56

Probably not tell

Grin
drspouse · 29/01/2019 16:04

@ariadne
Pretty much all the Man Friday stuff: in most papers
Penis stickers: mainly local press
T-shirts: local media, Scottish Times today.

MissSusanScreams · 29/01/2019 16:11

Women are being erased. The word, the rights they fought so hard for.

This is mass scale erasure if women’s rights to name themselves and their bodies and their suffering.

We are told to give way to others with no thought for ourselves our entire lives. No more.

If trans rights was just about acceptance then there wouldn’t be a problem. It is actually about dominace. Dominace over how women talk about themselves, dominance over safe spaces, dominace over women’s sports.

How some people can’t see the misogyny is beyond me.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 29/01/2019 16:19

Aridane QUite a lot has been in local papers, Manchester, Liverpool, Brighton, Metro etc. Lots more came into maintsream nationals over the last year.

But many people either don't do news at all or don't get what the reports are about - ofetnbecause they are the 'light entertainment' or ' shock horror' stories, rather than serious news. So the bald facts are rarely given, just weird sounding headlines and sound bites.

I used to think sme owmen were just rabid, poor transwomen just trying to lead their lives. Slowly the 'fluffy bunny' presentation of transwomen started to irk me, I was peaked by DH being angry about changing sex on birth certificates (and I'm the one with the human physiology based degrees Blush ). More recently Canadian style stupidity happeningh here has made me more and more rabid myself - Karen White should be more than enough to open anybody's eyes to the harm blind acceptance of the GRA reform is already causing - and it hasn't even been passed yet!

If I hear one more woman say "It hardly ever happens" I swear I will track her down and scare the shit out of her... see how she likes it, rare as it may be!

DangermousesSidekick · 29/01/2019 17:49

Who knew my very existence and concept could be so offensive?

This is the misogyny. Because to men, it is.

So where could we put crone island then?

OdeToDiazepam · 29/01/2019 18:16

Madness isn't it, words are important, so are their definitions. What's offensive is the attempted erasure of women

SlipperyLizard · 29/01/2019 18:33

Funny how “woman” is somehow offensive yet when gender critical people say that “t*rf” is a slur we are told “but it is just an acronym which describes your feminism”.

I think the silly stunts are needed, because too many people aren’t paying attention (hell, I wasn’t until about 6 months ago), and if we don’t pay attention then we’ll lose our right to define ourselves.

Humans cannot change sex.
